When I was in school (which is beginning to seem more and more like eons ago) we mostly frequented People's and Paddy's. People's had [usually] decent live bands W-Sa and pretty good specials each night of the week: Mondays - Tea nights, Tuesdays - Twofers, Wednesdays - mug nights, Friday/Saturday - $1 bottles. Paddy's was a decent hang out and drink kind of place for any night, but the lines would get crazy long on Mug night and weekends.
Sips was the place to go if you wanted to dance and/or hook up. MoJazz was where you went when you wanted to feel a little more hip and metro. Dean's List (now something else) was the nasty dance bar. Lumpy's was where you went for $.25 draws and flooded bathrooms. Cy's had $1 burgers and cheap pitchers on Wednesdays. Micky's had free popcorn, pizza and hotdogs (plus was the Tuesday night VCC hangout. So many good times!) Welch Ave was the old-timers and anti regular bar hangout. Tip Top was the dive bar for 6 am chili and beer before home football games. Whisky River was the downtown, townie bar. Thumbs was where you went if you had a fake and didn't want to worry about Campustown. Man, I miss those times. I couldn't tell you what the bars are like now. |
During school, Beckett's was the place to be. The whole Greek system would be there, and "Last Call at Becketts" was a party all by itself. T's Pub was similar, although a smaller set since, well, they actually checked IDs.

speaking of South Carolina. I want to go to Hilton Head one day.
Give me the skinny on HIlton Head please. |

The one with the pool??
Those aren't "fratty" bars, those are "high society" bars. :-P I gotta say, Pavlov's by far is the frattiest bar I've ever been to. |

The bars in Charleston from my friend at cofc are Silver Dollar, AC's, O'Malleys and the beer factory. He also said for pregaming, the kickin chickin is a good idea.

When I was up there, the #1 fratty bar was The Den - on Tuesday nights, it was wall-to-wall people and 100% Greek, which was kind of fun - you knew everyone there. The upstairs was only half the size it is now, which made it...uh...cozier. (no dancefloor!) Wednesdays was the night for fraternity parties, or a visit to the Saloon (not too fratty back then) Thursdays was the big Greek night for Mr. C's (now Players). The only night people dressed up and danced. Fridays the Skeller was popular with Greeks - $6 for a case of Rolling Rock ponies (am I dating myself or what?) each group got a table, and then mixed Cafe 210 ROCKED during the Spring (although it was "La Chaumiere" when I was there)-- we used to play a game called "Spiderweb", where we would sit outside during the day and compete to seduce our friends into cutting class and joining us (much safer when you were taking classes that didn't require your regular attendence) |
The Den was definately shady shaderson when I was there. I went there twice, once on a Saturday nite my senior year and then once on one of my senior week bar tours. Thursday nites were ALL about Bill Filer at The Grill. The Big Easy and The Cafe were must stops any nite, and Mad Mex was always good for the huge margaritas. The G-Man was an end of the night stop. The Saloon was good for smokin kareoke and oh how I miss those Monkey Boys. . . . tear. . .I wanna go back to school. . .

the worst part about HH is the annoying northern tourists.

I've never been into The Grill at all. The Big Easy is an occasional stop but I'm a rap/reggae person. By default, I spend more time than anything else at the shadiest places in State College: Players and Club Love |

the Saloon really isn't fratty. I'd say the G-man is the frattiest place, followed by Mad Mex, the Grill, and Cafe 210. But then, you can find anyone anywhere in State College though. Oh I can't wait for it to be warm and to be spending the afternoons at the Sportscafe... |
this is simply amazing. I actually made a thread that stuck and is now 4 pages long. unbelieveable
|
whats more unbelievable is that these greek chat people are using fratty like they know what it is.

Just because its been around for a while still doesn't mean that everyone knows how to be truly, fratty. Namely, 99% of those who live outside of the South.
|
Yes, that word is only the province of recent graduates who want to pose as students of other, more Southern institutions. Fake posturing, apparently, = fratty.

If the word has already been defined, then the people who originally coined the term are the ones who truly know how to use it. If later people want to distort the meaning of the word in an attempt to give it the meaning they would like it to have, that's fine. It's really not a big deal :) |

I thought it meant "homosexual"?
|
Sorry to burst your bubble douchebag, but I am an undergrad, at a southern institution. Keep it up with your petty speculations though.

Cant forget the LOOMIS... Where else do you have the upper bar, lower bar, LIGHTED dance floor (oh baby), your darts area, pool area... Oh wait, its the only semi good bar left in Clarion. ha... I said good and Clarion in the same sentence. :) |
Before trying to make some kind of judgemental remark, maybe you should look into the context of the statement. We were talking about Hilton Head Resort. The gated "Plantation" areas are where about 99 percent of all of the wealthy, socialite southeners are located. The main parts of the island are always filled with trashy northen tourists that we don't like to be around.

Bless his heart. It must be so hard for him to be a Texan from a new money suburb, not an actual Southerner with the "heritage" he tries so hard to posture as having. I'll try to stop picking on him, but his life would be easier if he just accepted who he really was- and what he can never actually be.
|
East Texas is definitely Southern, but that's about it. You can't look at SMU, Texas, and others and not think Southern. Once you get past there I say it's mostly Midwestern, or western.
|
Texas/SMU aren't "East" Texas. When I think East Texas, I think Tyler, Beaumont, etc.
