When I was in school (which is beginning to seem more and more like eons ago) we mostly frequented People's and Paddy's. People's had [usually] decent live bands W-Sa and pretty good specials each night of the week: Mondays - Tea nights, Tuesdays - Twofers, Wednesdays - mug nights, Friday/Saturday - $1 bottles. Paddy's was a decent hang out and drink kind of place for any night, but the lines would get crazy long on Mug night and weekends.

Sips was the place to go if you wanted to dance and/or hook up. MoJazz was where you went when you wanted to feel a little more hip and metro. Dean's List (now something else) was the nasty dance bar. Lumpy's was where you went for $.25 draws and flooded bathrooms. Cy's had $1 burgers and cheap pitchers on Wednesdays. Micky's had free popcorn, pizza and hotdogs (plus was the Tuesday night VCC hangout. So many good times!) Welch Ave was the old-timers and anti regular bar hangout. Tip Top was the dive bar for 6 am chili and beer before home football games. Whisky River was the downtown, townie bar. Thumbs was where you went if you had a fake and didn't want to worry about Campustown.

Man, I miss those times. I couldn't tell you what the bars are like now.

KSigkid 03-02-2006 01:15 PM

During school, Beckett's was the place to be. The whole Greek system would be there, and "Last Call at Becketts" was a party all by itself. T's Pub was similar, although a smaller set since, well, they actually checked IDs.

speaking of South Carolina. I want to go to Hilton Head one day.

Give me the skinny on HIlton Head please.

The bad thing is, though, that since they are on top of a hotel they close earlier than other bars due to noise ordinances. And you HAVE to take the elevator down instead of the stairs, which sucks 'cause max occupancy for the elevator is 8 people, so you have to wait FOREVER to get on the elevator. And if you're with a big group of people, you have to wait for each other 'cause you're probably going to get split up. Still a cool place to drink though.

I've been there before! I went there in August, because I was in Charleston for a bachlorette party, and one night we went to that bar ( don't remember the name, but I do remember it was on top of the hotel, and that elevator!!)-we had alot of fun there, but it was super crowded and hot and we did have to wait forever for the elevator!!

CarolinaDG 03-02-2006 01:42 PM

The one with the pool??

Those aren't "fratty" bars, those are "high society" bars. :-P

I gotta say, Pavlov's by far is the frattiest bar I've ever been to.

This makes me so happy because that's where I'm from. Yeah for Savannah. I have to agree about the beaches though.

The bars in Charleston from my friend at cofc are Silver Dollar, AC's, O'Malleys and the beer factory. He also said for pregaming, the kickin chickin is a good idea.

Me, I'm a Players/Club Love person with stops at the Skeller, Mad Mex, Sportscafe, Cafe 210, and the Den.
The G-man didn't open up until after I graduated, but I went there once after a football game, and once with an old boyfriend (Skull) who had become a professor (it's funny hearing students call your date "Professor")

When I was up there, the #1 fratty bar was The Den - on Tuesday nights, it was wall-to-wall people and 100% Greek, which was kind of fun - you knew everyone there. The upstairs was only half the size it is now, which made it...uh...cozier. (no dancefloor!)

Wednesdays was the night for fraternity parties, or a visit to the Saloon (not too fratty back then)

Thursdays was the big Greek night for Mr. C's (now Players). The only night people dressed up and danced.

Fridays the Skeller was popular with Greeks - $6 for a case of Rolling Rock ponies (am I dating myself or what?) each group got a table, and then mixed

Cafe 210 ROCKED during the Spring (although it was "La Chaumiere" when I was there)-- we used to play a game called "Spiderweb", where we would sit outside during the day and compete to seduce our friends into cutting class and joining us (much safer when you were taking classes that didn't require your regular attendence)

PSUSigKap 03-02-2006 03:28 PM

The Den was definately shady shaderson when I was there. I went there twice, once on a Saturday nite my senior year and then once on one of my senior week bar tours. Thursday nites were ALL about Bill Filer at The Grill. The Big Easy and The Cafe were must stops any nite, and Mad Mex was always good for the huge margaritas. The G-Man was an end of the night stop. The Saloon was good for smokin kareoke and oh how I miss those Monkey Boys. . . . tear. . .I wanna go back to school. . .

No, no this is a perfectly normal thing. We all date professors.

Hilton Head is like the high-society section of SC. I don't like vacationing in HH b/c everything there is so hard to find. Like, it's all set back from the road, so if you don't know exactly where you're going, you'll miss it. It's like they trying to shy away from promoting tourism.

That said, it's a nice place to visit. Their beaches are okay, but compared to the Charleston beaches, they're longer. If that makes any sense? Like, in Charleston, you have about 15-20 feet of sand, but as the tide rises you have to keep moving back. You start running out of real estate! That happens a bit on HH beaches, but not as bad, 'cause you've got more beach to start with. I guess it just depends on which beach you frequent.

HH is nice 'cause it's a LOT closer to Savannah.

The quiet atmosphere is precisely why we've been summering there since the early '70s. It's not too tacky despite being a tourist spot. Once you get in the plantation, it's even more low-key. What an ideal way to relax.

georgewallace3 03-02-2006 05:33 PM

the worst part about HH is the annoying northern tourists.

oldrowPHI 03-02-2006 06:13 PM

the Den is shady but it's not as bad as it used to be. I think the Brewery is worst. I love the Monkey Boys, only 1 can get me tipsy.

I've never been into The Grill at all. The Big Easy is an occasional stop but I'm a rap/reggae person. By default, I spend more time than anything else at the shadiest places in State College: Players and Club Love

Patty, you've aged yourself. ;) :p

the Saloon really isn't fratty. I'd say the G-man is the frattiest place, followed by Mad Mex, the Grill, and Cafe 210. But then, you can find anyone anywhere in State College though.

Oh I can't wait for it to be warm and to be spending the afternoons at the Sportscafe...

georgewallace3 03-02-2006 07:48 PM

this is simply amazing. I actually made a thread that stuck and is now 4 pages long. unbelieveable

grizzlyWG 03-02-2006 08:20 PM

whats more unbelievable is that these greek chat people are using fratty like they know what it is.

Holy Egocentricity, Batman! You don't think that the word "fratty" was invented by the people on Bill and Ted's Excellent Message Board or whatever it's being called these days, do you? It's been around for years. Sorry :)

georgewallace3 03-02-2006 09:49 PM

Just because its been around for a while still doesn't mean that everyone knows how to be truly, fratty. Namely, 99% of those who live outside of the South.

utealum 03-02-2006 09:59 PM

Yes, that word is only the province of recent graduates who want to pose as students of other, more Southern institutions. Fake posturing, apparently, = fratty.

If the word has already been defined, then the people who originally coined the term are the ones who truly know how to use it. If later people want to distort the meaning of the word in an attempt to give it the meaning they would like it to have, that's fine. It's really not a big deal :)

Don't go to Sea Pines. Stay at one of the more low-key (non-touristy) plantations.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 03-02-2006 10:14 PM

I thought it meant "homosexual"?

georgewallace3 03-02-2006 10:15 PM

Sorry to burst your bubble douchebag, but I am an undergrad, at a southern institution. Keep it up with your petty speculations though.

Plantations are just gated communities. That is all. On HHI, the first 5 gated communities were named after the 5 big plantations of yesteryear. No negative connotations.

AngelPhiSig 03-02-2006 11:13 PM

This is more for 33girl...

Cant forget the LOOMIS...

Where else do you have the upper bar, lower bar, LIGHTED dance floor (oh baby), your darts area, pool area...

Oh wait, its the only semi good bar left in Clarion.

ha... I said good and Clarion in the same sentence. :)

georgewallace3 03-02-2006 11:33 PM

Before trying to make some kind of judgemental remark, maybe you should look into the context of the statement. We were talking about Hilton Head Resort. The gated "Plantation" areas are where about 99 percent of all of the wealthy, socialite southeners are located. The main parts of the island are always filled with trashy northen tourists that we don't like to be around.

see, even though I've been back since I still remember it as the "go there on Sunday or in the middle of the day cause nothing else is open" bar. I have a very vivid memory of sitting what is now the lower bar while Fatal Attraction played on the big screen - sex scenes and all. Oh how nice. :p

Wait-I thought you were a first year law student at UT??

frathole 03-03-2006 10:26 AM

I'm going to be in Georgetown tonight which means Old Glory.

In Athens I would go to Beauregards.

In Charlottesville I would go to Virginian or Coupe DeVilles

In Lexington I would go to Charlottesville

In Atlanta there are a ton of options.

A lot of people don't consider Texas to be the South. I would consider east Texas to be Southern, maybe.

I tried to have this argument with saetex and it was pretty fruitless. For what it's worth, I agree. When I think of Southern places, Texas is not really included in that.

Me neither. When my family lived in Houston, it was a little Southern, *maybe*, but drive west and you're definitely in the Southwest. San Antonio? Definitely Southwest.

utealum 03-03-2006 01:47 PM

Bless his heart. It must be so hard for him to be a Texan from a new money suburb, not an actual Southerner with the "heritage" he tries so hard to posture as having. I'll try to stop picking on him, but his life would be easier if he just accepted who he really was- and what he can never actually be.

ilikehazing 03-03-2006 02:44 PM

East Texas is definitely Southern, but that's about it. You can't look at SMU, Texas, and others and not think Southern. Once you get past there I say it's mostly Midwestern, or western.

utealum 03-03-2006 02:51 PM

Texas/SMU aren't "East" Texas. When I think East Texas, I think Tyler, Beaumont, etc.
