I think how we do it is important because some methods can undermine "community."

I rarely feel a sense of "pride" when someone who looks like me achieves greatly. I am extremely biased in what I call an "achievement" and I tend to look at the success of the collective as above and beyond the success of the individual.

One good thing that comes from this is how the Greek community (NPHC, NPC, IFC, etc.) has supported the Zetas and learned more about the potential for fraud in every organization.

I find it interesting that we don't want people to stereotype us, yet we feel that our entire race has been shamed when one individual member of it does something "wrong". Isn't that a bit contradictory?

It can be quite contradictory. How I feel about this issue is based on context. Simply put, there are people (and topics) who I don't think are significant in the greater scheme of things. I acknowledge that we're all God's gift to the world.

I think that people will have a hard time seeing the good ZPB has done because of that scandal. I think she has set her organization at least two step back. If the local ZPB were working on a major project humanitarian, i am willing to bet it is as good as shot down because of the presidents actions. ETA I dont have to know the ZPB president to know that her actions has set her organization back. It is a simple statement of fact.

I see that you have a 'grudge' about my statement in the Pike's thread. You will be alright. My point was everyone is entitled to respect. I see that talking to people with a very basic level of respect is not very high on your agenda.

People may be weary of donating money (or paying dues) just as they were when the Red Cross was accused of not distributing money appropriately. However, this story hasn't made waves nationally quite yet.

As far as overshadowing the good ZPB has done, only smallminded people allow the mistakes of humanity to overthrow decades of success and service. To the best of their ability, I think it will be business as usual for local chapters of Zeta despite what's going on at IHQ. Our organizations have become much bigger than the people in them.

Zeta Phi Beta has been a stellar organization for 86 years. The allegations, investigation, misuse of sorority funds was done by one member (that we know of). Her misuse of funds does not make Zeta Phi Beta any less of a stellar organization. If you want to be truthful, the actions/silence of the Zetas on GC are commendable and represent the ideals of their organzation.

What was revealed this week could have happened and has happened to many other organizations in the past, the present, and the future. There are dishonest, unscrupulous people everywhere, in all organizations, churches, schools, etc.

I know that this incident will only cause the members of Zeta Phi Beta to bind together and recommit themselves to the mission of their sorority.

Being an Omega "sidekick" as you put it, is what I did in my unenlightened days. Knowing what I know now I would not do it again. However, under no circumstance would I trade my experience for anything. If someonewere to tell me that they want to become a fraternity sweetheart, I would discourage them because one day they will be on a message board and someone will try to attack their character even though it may be 10 years after the fact. :rolleyes:

You're cool with me in general but in that PIKA thread you did come in there and say that EVERYONE was acting like an uneducated idiot. LOL. We could've really done without that if you were trying to enlighten and add a sense of closure to that thread.

As far as this topic is concerned, you expressed your opinion that this Zeta incident fits the thread topic. The rest of us disagree with you on that and part of that has to do with the potentially inflammatory nature of your comment. Just like your comment that EVERYONE was acting like an uneducated idiot in that other thread. There's a thread in the Greek Life forum that has taken a noninflammatory approach to the Zeta IHQ incident. I think you should leave it at that.

It was a statement of opinion. This entire thread is about opinion, hence the title "The 2 Steps Back Award Goes To."

No one said this will not have some impact on Zeta. The extent of the impact (beyond criminal allegations for some national officers) is something we can not possibly know.

to piggy back off of Soror AKA2D91, generally we (AKA's) were not feeling "loved" and supported by greeks in general. The judgement was so loud it was hard to hear the voices who supported us although there were greeks who were very supportive. It was 'AKAs drowned those girls' or 'AKAS did this or that'. The organiztion was criticized when there were actual, individual (impersonators of AKA really) persons who created the situation that led to the deaths.

So you are partially right. The nature of the actual events is different but, the fact that a person or persons were individually resposible and not the body of the organization is quite the same. Just as Zeta, the body did not steal that money, AKA the body didn't put anybody in harms way.

I'm glad that most of us as greeks are supporting the members of ZPB. They are not responsible for the actions of a few. This too shall pass. Either of these events could have and has happened to any of our orgs, so let's always be there & support each other b/c we never know when it will be our turn.:)

I do not see why you all would want to compare the reactions received as a result of hazing deaths to the reactions the Zetas have received due to the mismanagement of funds. As with everything else in life, people do not have to show you support just because it makes you feel better. When you do receive support, there's no point in comparing the support you received to the support others are receiving for an unrelated and noncomparable incident. This shouldn't even be a discussion as far as I'm concerned.

Morning :-) Truthfully it's a matter of perspective. I admit it is kind of unfair to ask you to see it from our point of view because it wasn't your experience. Also I never spoke about reactions because of course deaths will be received differently than embezzlement. At least I would hope so! I'm talking about support for members who had nothing to do with either event. Some will see this point of view & some willl not. That's the reality of life. It's not about trying to convience someone, but about providing another perspective for an individual to ponder.
