I'm betting it is more the fact that they are dormant chapters (with a ready made alum base) rather than their Big Edgewater status.

Article about expansion

Below is a link to an article in the GW Hatchet about the expansion process. Nothing new really. :)

Thanks for the link.

"The three finalists are Kappa Alpha Theta, Pi Beta Phi and Chi Omega. These organizations were chosen from the 15 national Greek-letter organizations that applied."

That speaks highly for the GWU system -- they currently have 8 NPC groups and 15 applied.

of the 18 sororities who do not yet have a chapter at GW, 16 organizations inquired and 15 applied, said Dean Harwood, Student Activities Center assistant director of Greek life.
This article does indicate that GW has a very strong Greek system, based on the interest in their expansion. I'm sure whichever sorority is selected will be very successful!

Sigma Chi Returns to GWU
January 27, 2006

EVANSTON, Ill. – On Feb. 13, Sigma Chi Fraternity will officially begin recruiting men from George Washington University. With the addition of Sigma Chi, the GWU campus will be home to 13 fraternities.

“Expansion is good for the entire Greek system. It gets the fraternities and sororities thinking about their values and what is really important to them,” said Adam Peterson, the Sigma Chi Headquarters representative who will be leading the GWU expansion effort. “I am really excited for the young men who will have this opportunity to start something new.”

The recruitment effort will focus on one-on-one communication, stressing life-long friendships and the unique leadership opportunities available to members of Sigma Chi. In addition, Sigma Chi will host larger informational events, beginning with a presentation to the campus on Feb. 16. Informational tables will also be set up at the Marvin Center on Feb. 9 and 10 from 10 a.m to 2 p.m.

For the curious... the campus has eight sororities, with total at 85 (I think) and they last opened for expansion in either 2001 or 2002, when Alpha Phi came to the campus.

Current sororities:
Alpha Delta Pi
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Alpha Phi
Delta Gamma
Kappa Kappa Gamma
Phi Sigma Sigma
Sigma Delta Tau
Sigma Kappa

This post should accurately read "NPC sororities" not just "sororities". There are four (4) NPHC sororities at GWU.

Sorry to nitpick but after reading the crap in the Pikes @ Howard thread  http://gwired.gwu.edu/sac/greek/governingcouncils/nphc/

My cousin was in MMT's pledge class at GW many, many years ago. She still has her pledge album and the pictures are so adorable!
We had a song about MMT that we sang at Penn State. I don't know why.

There are more than NPC and NPHC sororities at GW. We have 2 Latina Sororities and 1 Asian Sorority, as well as 3 active NPHC sororities.

Since the topic was NPC expansion, I think that's why the OP only included the NPC sororities.
