Tonight's bar scene with Renee and the White guy -- very interesting.

Why couldn't Renee be frank with Carmen while shopping?
Just tell her that you really don't think the dashiki would be appropriate to wear for your first time visiting a Black church. And that oftentimes you will see people in suits and dresses.

 @ Renee
 @ Bruno
*sigh* at Carmen
 @ the teenage son
:) @ Rose

I don't know if last night was a repeat but the white girl actually revealed herself as "white" to the poetry group. When they came to her house to actually see her as a white girl, why her mom have to go and call them folks "black creatures"?!?!! Man, it was like a silent language. Everyone was kinda like," Yep, time to go!!!!"

Last night was not a repeat.

She called them "beautiful Black creatures" and I chalk that up to her being one of those psuedo earthy, flighty, this side of hippie type people.

She gives me the impression that she was raised by hippies/flower children/ on a commune somewhere. Very granola. I find her to be more corny than malicious.

I've yet to see this show, but this comment made me laugh :) :)

MeezDiscreet 03-16-2006 12:03 PM

i really don't think that carmen means any harm. her problem is soooo clear to me: all of her life, she's been surrounded by people who thought it best not to tell her "shut up weirdo!" or explain to her that everything that comes to mind doesn't have to come out of her mouth. she told that dude he was "off the chain." wth??

i wish they had found a different black family for this "experiment." they would be a great family if the premise of the show was just living WITH a family of a different race. the son is totally closed off to it and renee just looks albino with her make-up on.

and renee aint about isht because she went shopping with carmen but didn't say anything about it until she was talking about her with her family. that aint right.

bruno is a d*ckhead. was that foo' actually RAISING THE ROOF in church???!!!!

Even with "beautiful" thrown in, it still makes me raise an eyebrow. :o ;) I felt embarrassed for the daughter. I mean the mom just had, just had to get up and do a poem. Why?!?:o :o

Exactly. When I think of "creatures" NOTHING good comes to mind about it.

I agree that perhaps a different Black family would have made for a better show.

NO.He.didn't. I gotta stay awake Saturday to see this isht.:o

Agreed, although I was  when she asked that boy if he was gay or straight. Why the heck did she do that? Why did she think it was her business?

I think she got tired of her after a while. She tried to show her the "Church Hat" :) and other styles, but Carmen felt like she looked stupid in them. I felt like Renee was like Whateva after a while. But part of me also felt like she was thinking - "Ok, so you didn't like what I picked out??? Let me see you go to church in that Dashiki."

Carmen reminds me of Freddy off of "A Different World" in a sense. When she stood up and started talking at that poetry session, I cringed.

Why do I keep watching this show I keep asking myself...

Two Words...

Ice. Cube.

It it were by anyone else, I don't think I'd keep watching it.

beauty_6049 03-21-2006 11:30 PM

I have seen two episodes and I have mixed reviews. I like the show because it gives EVERY race an opportunity to see how black and white people or interpretted. What I dont like is how they make the black mother/wife come across as this woman with a bad attitude. True, some things that she believes are unfounded but it hurts to see how the white teenage girl can be inspired by her poetry peers and she had the courage to tell them the truth.

Tickled Pink 2 03-22-2006 11:31 PM

Lawd, they still on "Beautiful Black Creature".

That wig on that the son is wearing is HORRIBLE! http://www.websmileys.com/sm/dressed/bek064.gif

I'm a little delayed because I'm watching it on DVR.

... Oh Lawd. They done took these fools to Crenshaw....

Can someone PLEEEEEEAAAAAAASSSSE shut Carmen UP?

And if their son does not see racism after 1 week of being around Carmen and Bruno, he is just not too bright.

I don't think the son is really bright at all. He is like Bruno in some respects b/c he refuses to see that racism exists. Because he doesn't see it or experience it, he doesn't care.

I am mad he bought a $150 watch! He hasn't even finished high school & has no job!

I don't think he even made it to highschool. I thought I heard him say he got kicked out of school, was 16, the last grade he was in was the 8th grade, and he had previously flunked the 6th and the 8th grade.

On a lighter note....(maybe not so light) ,I just hope people do not get carzy and spin off bad habits from this show such as jumping into make-up to switch races for Halloween because it is a cool new trend, or another reality show setting people up and revealing the truth in the end, or auditioning for movie/plays/tv/music roles or other jobs where a certain race may be preferred. Example: A new black/other movie or music group comes out, get rave reviews, and it turns out all participants are actually non-black/non-other and had everyone fooled. Or doing something like the guy in Soul Man. . :o  :p just joking but it could happen;)

I don't think it'll happen. If it does, they would need some pretty good make up artists. To me, even these people on Black.White. don't look real. Bruno's makeup is so uneven. .

rattlerbrat 03-26-2006 02:30 PM

I'm surprised that no one here recognized the daughter. She's an actress. I think she's on this mini-show about kids and movies on "The Disney Channel".

*edit* Ah, found her:

I did not know that. Wow! So what are they doing about it? No wonder he has the type of attitude he has. He is not interested at all. How can he learn from this, if he is not even in school learning?

CrimsonTide4 03-27-2006 01:01 AM

Okay seriously I want to slap Renee and Brian. Right now, they are acting as if this is their first real attempt to parent their son. Brian is acting passive agressive as all hell whereas Renee, with the seriously faulty hair line, is on his azz. Belatedly.

Why does your KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL at the 8th grade son even have $150? If I had a son who had been kicked out of school and could not be enrolled again until he was 18, he would NOT be wearing Ecko!!! He would be wearing SHMEDIUM white tees from Wal Mart with Wrangler jeans hugging his azz. He would have Keds and ProWings adorning his feet. WE would most assuredly not be on a TV show. No wonder he can miss 6 weeks of school. He's missed it way longer than that.

No, Renee, he does not think about consequences becuase you all never taught and reinforced consequences alllllllll his life.

And Rose, WOW, that she used to be a Movie Surfer.

CrimsonTide4 03-27-2006 01:35 AM

Nick, seriously you are a waste.of.the.orgasm. it took to create you. You were kicked out of the 6th and the 8th grade. You don't know why your "best friend" carried a knife.

Deanna, your makeup is EXTREMELY MESSED up. Your weave is too. Deanna, seriously STFU!!! Something about their exchange in Deanna's apartment bothers me.

Leimert Park segment was extremely interesting but Bruno is still aloof. Carmen , this was your turning point, huh?

Next week's episode :( :(

i definitely think that exchange between deanna and carmen was fake. also, i meant to point this out, but on the episode where rose "comes out," there was a bigger chick in the poetry class who looked just like rose's skin tone. since we know that rose's makeup doesn't look even kinda real, i think they planted somebody to authenticate her look

I am sure you will get great mileage out of it. I make up such great colloquialisms. :D

Deanna was way too calm. First, why you let some random white woman all the way in your house and sit on your couch without knowing who it was? WTH?

I was just on IMDB and it appears that Nick is Nicholas Sparks II. So is Brian really Nicholas Brian Sparks I? They only credit Nick the 16 year old who is having a tough time getting out of middle school and Bruno.

I really had high hopes for this show but finding out that Rose is a former Movie Surfer, Bruno is also an actor from MacGyver, Nick is a small scale thug in the making, this show has lost its authenticity with me. But I'll continue to watch to see if Bruno learns anything.

Dear Ice Cube,

If you decide to do this "experiment" again, here are a few suggestions:
  • have them live in Alabama, not California
  • better makeup for the Black to White family
  • The White woman who becomes Black, please don't do the mangy, low cut afro
  • Have these people do some reading first because Carmen's reply regarding Madame CJ Walker and the Panther was maddening
  • Have Tyra Banks create the challenges.

All the best on your future endeavors,

I initially thought something was odd about her and I could not figure it out. Of course we can see through that stuff and figure when something is not quite right. That is what I meant in a previous statement about not "planting" folks outside of the show in the future. I originally thought she may have been a guy in drag.

brownsugar952 03-28-2006 08:28 PM

I am soooo glad that I read this thread. I was fearing that I was the only one that had these thoughts about this show. WHO did the casting? Did ANYONE think that it was maybe a bad idea to have a teenage son on the show that can not form a complete sentence? Why are his parents so concerned with him knowing that there is racism in the world? I think there are much more important things to teach him. Instead of parading around in a TV show, they should of been trying to find a school for him to attend.

And another thing... I don't buy that he got kicked out of school for bringing a knife ONE TIME. That doesn't make sense. I know different schools have different rules, but I know of people who brought GUNS to school and they graduated on time. No one will ever make me believe that they couldn't find an alternative school to send him if education is truly important to them.

This show makes me sick... but I can't stop watching it... I think I like to torture myself :(

CrimsonTide4 03-29-2006 11:18 PM

The etiquette class' reaction and schooling Nick is irritating me.

DC_Zeta1920 03-30-2006 09:14 PM

I just watched this for the first time the other day and caught last nights episode.

It seems that Rose gets it but Bruno doesn't. I wanted to hit him over the head with cast iron skillet.

Those youth were getting a little too happy with the N word and I couldn't believe Nick said he didn't care. :(

ZetaStorm 04-01-2006 08:08 PM

This show has my head spinning. I don't think I can take another episode. What was with Bruno's 'video'? I really don't think I'm going to see this all the way out to the end of the season. Why is the black family shocked that their son is clueless of his history? They wait until he's 16 to give him his first black history lesson? I'm wondering can this get any worse or any more unbelievable? I'm still dazed and confused from last week's episode. Is it me or is everyone revealing that they have on make up? Who's going to be next? Seriously though I thought those kids in the class were going to say they knew he was black. Because Lord knows he does not look white. LOL

The_Light_House 04-02-2006 02:31 PM

Hello. I've been reading some of the various posts on various threads and decided to register today.

I just started watching the show and I am a bit confused. I feel like I should have been watching from the beginning. I was so disgusted with the son "giving permission" to those white kids to say the n word. I thought it was deplorable. Whether you're in touch with your heritage or not, it just seems like you would know that was not okay. I feel like his parents should be more disappointed in themselves than in him because clearly they missed the boat on teaching him respect for himself and respect for his people.:( :(

This show is beginning to get on my nerves. I am not sure who did the casting but they should have thought about this little more. But the problem is - I am sure that Ice Cube has some involvement with this process but he is not the only decision maker.

It is evident that some of the creators have stereotypes about Black people and that is whey they chose this family. "Dominant Black mother, semi-militant Black husband and thuggish Black male son." And of course, the educated, high class white family.

I want to know - why did they have to give the white women an Afro when she is in "black face"? That is another stereotype - Black women have nappy hair.

I could go on forever about this topic. I keep watching because I am interested in seeing what Bruno has to say at the end.

These are interesting observations because I felt that stereotypes figured prominently on both sides (Black as well as White). The white woman as the blithering, weak earth mother and the father as the condescending, privileged, blinders wearing 'racism doesn't exist anymore' white man.

How is "Black women have nappy hair" a stereotype?

Honeykiss1974 04-07-2006 06:33 PM

I don't see how yall can watch that show. After 2 episodes, I just didn't find it interesting.

I agree with the earlier poster that stated that this show may have more appeal/depth is people switched races and stayed that way for days/weeks (a la Black Like Me or shoot, even Soul Man).
