Sounds like a perfectly reasonable name to me!

My dentist's daughter is named Auburn and just take a wild guess where she went. :)

Optimist Prime 12-06-2005 08:58 PM

Radford would work for either, I guess. Or not.

the worst one would be Arizona State. That would just be mean.

Yes! I forgot about those.

I think Dalhousie could be a unisex name.

CSUSigEp 12-06-2005 09:38 PM

Cal of course!

Hmmm, what about Winthrop? I'm really liking the "W" school names.

Don't forget about Wingate!

I think Warren Wilson takes the cake. You've got his last name covered, and the double-W sound!

Hmm, avoiding "state" school-sounding names, what about Newberry? Stetson?

Miami?

ETA: Webb (from Gardner-Webb) and Lenoir/Lenora (from Lenoir-Rhyne)

wrigley 12-07-2005 12:33 AM

twins: Northwestern and Southwestern

boys: Drake
Washington

Wellesley(sp?)

If I were to name my child after a school, of course it would be my alma mater......Ashland.:D

epchick 12-07-2005 04:47 PM

Girls:
Trinity (Trinity University)
Georgia
Auburn (of course...that seems to be the concensus of everyone)
Clara (from Santa Clara University)
Sierra or L'Sierra (from La Sierra University)--lol
Pepperdine (this should have been my alma mater)
Geneva (from Geneva College)

Boys:
Paul Quinn
Edward (from St. Edward's U.)
Xavier
Clark (from Clark Atlanta University)
Morris (from Morris Brown College)
George (from Georgetown University)
Ross (from Sul Ross St. University)

Then there are these names (for a girl) that I would NOT choose:
Immaculata (from Immaculata University)---LMFAO!!!
Susquehanna (from Susquehanna University)

----How about something like USF (pronounced U-SEF) for a boy?? ROTFLMFAO!!

There's always Allison (as is Mount Allison) for a girl.

AOIIBrandi 12-08-2005 10:26 AM

Francis Marion and Hampton Sydney - could either be unisex or Twin's names.

Don't forget if there's a triplet, he's gotta be Usafa. (Though that might come a little close to the spelling of Public Enemy Number One Usama bin Laden!)

GO AIR FORCE... BEAT ARMY... SINK NAVY! (Not this year...!)

Louis Brandeis is who the school is named after. He was the first Jewish Supreme Court justice.

The school was almost named Einstein University though...and I don't know if anyone would name their kid Einstein!

Fleur de Lis 02-22-2008 01:37 PM

I've actually considered using Emory for a child's name.

I know Newberry is a college, but every time I hear the name, it reminds me of a 5 & 10.

summer_gphib 02-22-2008 03:00 PM

I had a professor who named his son Yale. I thought that was reallly cute. :D

Unregistered- 02-22-2008 03:09 PM

Thank you for this thread bump. I had a haha when I saw it, especially when I remember why this thread was created. :p

I wonder how little Dartmouth is doing?

Fawn Liebowitz 02-22-2008 03:10 PM

My boss named his daughter Denison - I thought it was freaky at first but now I really like it. It was her mother's maiden name, though...not named after the school.

I would never name a child this, but there are thousands of animals here named Bama - I have only heard it used as a nickname for a person. I thought of using the name Bryant, but was afraid of too many Bear Bryant jokes.

ForeverRoses 02-22-2008 03:50 PM

That Reminds me of Scarlett Ann Grey. She went by Ann and changed her last name when she got married (but she did go to Ohio State).

My son went to daycare with a little boy named Kenyon who had an older sister named Oberlin (but they spelled it Oberlynn or something).

TrojanWoman 02-22-2008 03:52 PM

I have friends who named their son Troy and their daughter Helen. They are clearly Southern Cal alums!

nittanyalum 02-22-2008 03:53 PM

No one's probably going to believe me on this, but I swear to god, someone once sent me an article about a couple in PA that named their kids "Nittany" (girl) and "Lion" (boy). No lie. Any other PA-ers remember that? I'll have to blast my email list and try to shake out who I got that from. I promise I'll try to cite the source, but I swear I'm not making it up. You can't make stuff like that up.

33girl 02-22-2008 04:17 PM

I don't remember it, but don't worry, I TOTALLY believe you. The pets are probably named Paterno and The Diner.

LOL, or more likely, "JoePa" and "Sticky Buns". :D

PinkRose1098 02-22-2008 04:24 PM

I remember seeing some one with two boys with name to the effect of Neyland and Eli Knoxville.

I had to shake my head but then I remembered my dad would have done that. I'm glad I'm a girl or I might have ended up Neyland Bryant or something like that being the child of UA/TN mixed marriage.

NutBrnHair 02-22-2008 04:40 PM

I do know some Ole Miss alums who named their miniature dachshund "Archie Manning!"

bejazd 02-22-2008 05:53 PM

I'm going with Faber.

Leslie Anne 02-22-2008 05:57 PM

If I was naming after alma maters I guess I'd have Mary and Dom. Pretty boring. I like the school mascot names but naming my son Testudo would just be cruel. :D

aggieAXO 02-22-2008 09:25 PM

I have seen people named Aggie-I kind of like the name:D

All of the Aggies that I know are short for Agnes. A rather "old" name.

However, in the case of Texas A&M, sadly these "Aggies" are likely not short for Agnes. Tragically, these parents probably are *actually* naming their child after the mascot.

Yep, some from that school are just that weird....

catiebug 02-23-2008 09:11 AM

Only some???
:D

My uncle went to Texas A&M. Luckily, he did not name either of his children Aggie. Though he did name them after where they were born...Virginia and York. I'm sure, growing up, York must've been teased by the other schoolchildren. Anyways, even though he didn't name either of his kids Aggie, he is still a very weird person. :p
