People are going to drink. People are going to binge drink. Yes, that's unfortunate. No, it's not healthy. Yes, people should play mom to their friends (this is obviously not a foolproof plan). Yes, people should watch their drinks (this is obviously not a foolproof plan).



However, that's another issue entirely because even if she was 110 percent stone cold SOBER she still would have been unable to fight off 7 football players.

Furthermore, staying away from parties does not keep you from getting raped. You guys come up with a 100 percent foolproof rape prevention tactic, let me know.

part of a "just world" view ("just" as is fair) is that people don't want to believe that bad things happen to good people for no reason whatsoever. it is easier to believe that there is SOMETHING that the victim did wrong or could have done right than it is to believe that shit happens to nice people.

not that everybody was commenting to that effect, it just occured to me that more than a few of the responses were "seeking a reason" (in one wording or another) and sometimes there just isn't. one shouldn't look for reason in rape, unless they're trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with the rapist.

I don't think it is fair to tell women they should not be at parties. WE all go to parties when we are undergrads. It's a fun thing to do.
Agree with Sugar and Spice... unless that girl was Buffy the Vampire Slayer their is no way you can fight off seven guys.
Just for the record if a women says no but doesn't fight off the attacker-- it's still rape.
Also I know the report says that the boys took off her clothes... but it doesn't matter what happened... if she said no and they had sex with her then its rape.

I don't think that anyone on here is saying that it wasn't rape... I was just pointing out, that some people tend to think that if a woman doesn't fight back or agrees with things up to a point then it isn't rape.

I graduated from UTC in 97. This story really struck a nerve with me. I briefly dated a guy who lived in Boling 202 - I can visualize where the whole thing allegedly occurred. I still remember what the LXA house looks like - and of course staying there late some nights partying.

This isn't the first time that one of the sports teams has been in trouble for causing problems at a fraternity party (or after being at one of the fraternity parties). I vividly remember a fight breaking out at a Kappa Sig party - started by the wrestling team. After that occurred, guest lists were strictly enforced. It was really sad that a few people ruined it for the others.

I feel bad for LXA. Of course, I don't know any of their current members, but the brothers that were there 10 years ago were nice guys. If these guys are the same type of guys, then they don't deserve their name being drug thru the mud.

I can totally see the football players being in trouble for breaking a curfew - they took that stuff pretty seriously. If these guys really did it, I hope they are punished to the fullest extent of the law. I still have friends in Chattanooga - I'll keep you posted as this unfolds.

Usually I think you're right, DeltAlum. In cases like this, however, I lean toward Coramoor's more cynical position. Even at schools that aren't spectacular football powerhouses, the athletic department and its influential supporters (the gambling industry, the vendors of souvenirs, the "hospitality industry," the athletic conference and the networks / stations and licensees contractually linked to it, and so on) have an amazing ability -- and an amazing amount of money -- to make almost anything disappear. Schools like McGill, which canceled its season because of a hazing scandal, are few and far between. We'll see, of course. I've been wrong before.

I think if this can be proven, felony counts against seven athletes is more than any university can overlook.

I'm amazed at this entire situation... I guess we would like to think that people are better than that, but we're usually proven wrong. I feel for her and I hope she recovers from this ordeal.

I am still appaled at this situation and sometimes Athletes are held of above the rules which they shouldnt be at all.

The Chapter should be looked at By and will be by LXA IHQ.



Now, if these so called JOCKs will be looked at also with the same jaundiced eye will be told in the long run!

Six Charged in Alleged Gang Rape Investigation

Six U-T-C football players are now charged with rape. The charges are the result of an investigation into allegations of gang rape made by an 18 year old female UTC student.
The six charged are Lironnie Davis, DeJuan Payne, Muhammed Ahmad Abdus-Salaam, Cori Stukes, Terrence Thomas and Larry White. Anthony Brodnax was not charged. The seven players were suspended from the team. Their attorney claims the sex was consentual. Campus police turned over their findings to the Hamilton County District Attorney's office. They met today and announced the criminal charges this afternoon. Head football coach Rodney Allison will hold a news conference at 5:30 this evening and we'll have more information as it becomes available.

Attorney Defends Charged Players

Jerry Summers was very adamant when he responded to the charges against the 6 U-T-C students. He repeated what he's said all along, the sex was consensual.

"There are people who like to have sex with football players," he said.

He said the alleged victim had a prior history with some of the players.

"One of the young men she had been with before and she had no objections to a couple of others and she initiated contact with the other and we think that is consensual," said Summers.

He says the public is making decisions before the facts are presented.

"They are presumed to be innocent," he said. "From what we've all heard, it's a forgone conclusion."

Instead, he says the facts are straightforward.

"One, it was consensual. Secondly, she didn't report it until 2 and half days later and third, she went to a football game and cheered for players who had supposedly raped her. She cheered for the Mocs and we can prove that!"






I certainly hope she has a good attorney.

Also just because something (if it was indeed) was consensual doesn't mean that it was concensual the last time. I always hate that they bring up peoples sexual history when talking about rape.... but I guess that everyone is allowed to defend themselves.

I know it's the job of a defense lawyer to defend his clients using any tactic available to him....but I still couldn't sleep at night if I said some of the things that Summers did.

And shame on that student for insinuating that the victim "asked for it." I hope the women at UT Chattanooga steer clear of him. His comment reminded me of a kid I took sociology with one semester. He seemed like a nice enough guy until we talked about date rape one day and he adamantly insisted that if women dress a certain way/drink a lot/have reputations as being easy, they shouldn't be surprised if they get raped. He then went on to say that a victim has an easy reputation, it's grounds for dismissal of the rape case because "you can't tell if chicks like that are lying."

After that, the women in that class avoided him like the plague.

A few questions:

How many of you have been raped? Gang raped? By football players, or other men two or three times your size? How many of you have had a weird feeling after you drank something, and don't quite remember the rest of the night -- or remember things like they're in fog or a movie afterwards?

It's odd that this woman actually went to the football game and cheered for this team, if she was raped - but was she still drugged? Unsure of what happened?

I got an email today, telling me what to do if I'm approached by a possible rapist. I'm going to copy it here, along with my personal experience:

A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:

1) The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle . They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun, braid or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed . They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.

2) The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women who's clothing is easy to remove quickly . Many of them carry scissors around specifically to cut clothing.
I was wearing a buttoned blouse and knee length skirt

3) They also look for women on their cell phone , searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.
My attacker was about my height, but much stronger.

4) Men are most likely to attack & rape in the early morning, between 5:00a.m. and 8:30a.m.
I was attacked at 12:30 in the afternoon, on the way home from church.

5) The number one place women are abducted from/attacked is grocery store parking lots. Number two is office parking lots/garages. Number three is public restrooms.
I was attacked on the sidewalk of a busy street.

6) The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to another location where they don't have to worry about getting caught.
Even though there were 4 or 5 people standing right there, my attacker slammed my head onto a bus shelter.

7) Only 2% said they carried weapons because rape carries a 3-5 year sentence but rape with a weapon is 15-20 years.

8) If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isn't worth it because it will be time-consuming.
My attack started when the rapist tried to grab my breast. I hit him with my purse, and kneed him in the groin.

9) These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas, or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands. Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys you're not worth it.

10) Several defense mechanisms he taught us are: If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: "I can't believe it is so cold out here", "we're in for a bad winter." Now you've seen their face and could identify them in a line-up; you lose appeal as a target.
Not only could I identify this man, so could the others who WATCHED the whole attack.

11) If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell STOP or STAY BACK ! Most of the rapists this man talked to said they'd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
I yelled and screamed until I passed out.

12) If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yell I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.
I was told not to ever carry a weapon

13) If someone grabs you, you can't beat them with strength but you can by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm (between the elbow and armpit) OR in the upper inner thigh VERY VERY HARD . One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands - the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it hurts.

14) After the initial hit, always GO for the GROIN . I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guy's parts it is extremely painful. You might think that you'll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and he's out of there.
I had started by kicking him in the groin. It angered him. He slammed my head into the metal frame of a bus shelter, and when I fell, he yanked my panties off. I do not remember the entire ordeal, but I was raped (I was a virgin) and sodomized. I remember the faces of the people who watched. When he was done, he flipped me over onto my back, hitting my head on the shelter again, spit in my face, and left. No one tried to help me. I finally got up and stumbled the 2 blocks to a hospital. I had to have reconstructive surgery from the violence of the attack.

THERE ARE NO RULES ABOUT WHAT WILL KEEP YOU SAFE AND WHAT WON'T!

Don't judge or make assumptions until the trial. Until you've walked in her shoes, you have no idea what has happened -- either with or without drugs, with or without her permission.

When I talked to the police, and described the exact place it happened, I was told that as many as 500 or more people may have seen it, because there are a lot of apartments there and it's a busy intersection. The faces I remember are the people who were close enough to almost touch me. Afterwards I was happy that they didn't join in. One woman tried not to watch, but didn't help me either. I've lost a lot of the anger I had, except when I see a possible miscarriage of justice -- then it all comes right back to me in bright flashes of anger like you wouldn't believe!

Ann, I honestly don't know what to say. I'm glad that you seem to have your anger under control, but if you were here, I'd give you a big hug right now. I really do appreciate your candor, and sharing the remarks. God bless you!

the problem here is that i'm sure at least one person on that jury is going to be harboring the "well she had to have done SOMETHING" attitudes. whether they realize it openly or not.

You're absolutely right. It's distressing.

That's what scares me about ANY rape case. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's heard the story about the judge who held a needle and said that as long as the needle (the rape victim) moved, it couldn't be threaded (raped).

And if she really did do this willingly, maybe (!) this chapter should have a few discussions on how easily a situation such as this can become a crime! Their advisor would do well to start some risk management lectures ASAP.

I thought this was a football thing? Not a fraternity thing?

Fraternity under investigation in light of alleged rape

The UTC chapter of Lambda Chi Alpha could face suspension from university activities for its possible role in the events that led to the alleged rape of a UTC student, Chancellor Roger Brown said.
The alleged victim said she attended a party at the Lambda Chi house on Oct. 21, the night the alleged rape occurred, according to the police report. The police report also stated the alleged victim, who is underage, said she consumed so much alcohol at the party she could not walk up the stairs on her own.
Jim Hicks, associate dean of student life, said the investigation into the fraternity's actions is ongoing.
"Right now, we are in the process of talking to some people to see what, if anything, happened, and if there were any violations," he said.
Hicks said the fraternity must abide by state laws, meaning they cannot provide alcohol to minors or allow minors to drink at their parties.
"Individuals must bring their own [alcohol] for personal consumption and must be of age," he said.
Phone calls on Tuesday and Wednesday to chapter president Scott Wells and to the fraternity's national headquarters were not returned.
According to the fraternity constitution, alcoholic beverages can be consumed on chapter functions as long as the consumption does not violate state laws or university regulations.
"The Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity bases its position upon recognition that clear evidence exists that the misuse of alcoholic beverages can erode the foundation of fraternalism … " the fraternity constitution states.
Hicks said the chapter was already on university probation and were not supposed to have functions or parties. He said university officials are investigating to see if the event on Oct. 21 meets the definition of a party.
Hicks did not know if alcohol violations played a part in the chapter's probation.
"It was a variety of little things," he said. "There were some noise violations and things like that."
Hicks said he expects the university's investigation of the fraternity to last another week or two.
He said the penalty for fraternity violations of university regulations range from probation to removal of recognition as a university group.
Hicks said he wants to wait until the investigation is complete to say whether the alleged actions by the fraternity could result in removal of recognition as a group by the university.

Okay, I stand corrected: the FOOTBALL TEAM needs the lectures etc etc. along with the fraternity, if indeed it is needed.

The alleged UTC rape victim gives her first television interview to Eyewitness News.

"When we got to the apartment, we went inside and I thought I would sleep and that's when everything happened," she said.

The 18 year old Freshman told her side of the story from October 21st.

"At that point, I was kind of blacking in and out," she said. "I was on the verge of passing out when we got there."

She says seven members of the football team took advantage of her after she admitted to drinking heavily at a fraternity house.

"I knew who they were," she said. "I recognized all their faces."

She talked about dealing with what happened.

"I try to go about my everyday life and do what I normally do," she said. "Don't stop because if I do, that will make me think about it more."

After she filed the report and news broke, she heard comments on campus. Some positive, most negative.

"Some people say I'm doing it for attention," she said. "Certainly, that's not it at all. I don't like this type of attention. I wish it never happened at all. I wish it could all stop. But since it did happen, I hope they do get punished."

I think its every man's mightmare to have sex with a woman and then have her accuse him of rape.

It shouldn't be "every man's nightmare" if these men are having sober, consensual sex with women. Women are NOT running around all willy-nilly accusing men of raping them for fun. It is clear in this story that the woman was intoxicated way past the point of consent. Why are you so sympathetic to the perpetrators?
