I used to get so annoyed when I would hit the power button on the NES and it would just flash on and off. That's what I hated about cartridges - they got dust on the inside and wouldn't work right. Now the games on CDs you have to be careful not to scratch....

Anyway, I remember wanting the GIJoe Aircraft Carrier...The thing was huge, and probably about $100, which is steep for a toy now, let alone the 80's.

Yes, I too wanted an easy bake oven. Now I have a real oven and hate to cook-maybe if I had gotten the easy bake oven things would be different?

I also wanted a snoopy snow cone machine.

Considering I was a child born to parents who were 16 and 19 years old (who are still happily married by the way) I had it pretty good....

i had the easy bake oven one year (i didnt even ask for it, my mom thought it looked cool) and i had a blast with it... but i lost that damn handle that sticks into the side to get the cakes and it went into the closet to never emerge...

i had the barbie town house with the elevator up the side...which was a ton of fun... but hurricane andrew ruined its cardboard backing and i had to throw it away :(

i was weird...i never "wanted" anything.. i was very content with my books (im a nerd i know) and the one cabbage patch doll i had that went with me EVERYWHERE... i took very good care of what i did have and didnt really crave "newer" things....but once i got newer things they became well loved and well used...

BUT...the one thing i DID want... was a mall madness game.. a friend of mine had it and we played it all the time..i was obsessed with it... but thinking back i dont think i ever verbalized that "want" to my mom... hmmm maybe i would have gotten it. i dunno

I realllly wanted a toy piano. I thought I'd be like Lionus (?) on Peanuts, and play all of these great songs. Then I got one and it sounded nothing like a piano. :(

My little sister used to read the Sweet Valley High & other Sweet Valley series books. I would have to borrow hers to read b/c she always got the books as gifts while I got the Babysitters Club. I wanted to read about the twins & not babysitters.

YES!!! I still want an easy-bake oven...lol. I go to Target and see all these slurpee makers and ice cream makers and I just think to myself "what I wouldn't give to be 10 years old again and being able to just go to town and create all these awesome things" but dang, i'll admit it, I still want them. When I have my children, who will be the first person to play with these items? ME!! lol.

I'm in the same boat as you. I always wanted an Easy-Bake Oven but never got one. :(

I had ALL the Sweet Valley books. I let my cousin borrow them and never saw them again!

Carnation, isn't this thread supposed to be about things we wanted badly but didn't live up to the hype after we got them?

carnation 11-02-2005 07:25 AM

Well, yeah, but these stories have been interesting! I'm astounded by the number of people who didn't get Easy-Bake Ovens!

Xylochick216 11-02-2005 08:53 AM

I never got the Easy Bake Oven, either. But I guess it's OK because my mom used to let us bake in the real oven when I was little (with supervision, of couse)

epchick 11-02-2005 06:11 PM

OOOOhhh sorry didn't understand the idea of this thread....

Ok the toy I really wanted but didn't live up to the hype once I got it was that "Mystery Date" game. I don't really remember exactly what it was called, but it was a game where you had to find out which guy liked you. You had a list of guys and there was a phone in the game that would give you clues and once you figured out the clues you could "call" the guy on the phone.

I wanted that game soooooooo badly, and once I got it I found out that it was the most stupidest game in the entire world. It totally did not live up to what I expected!! Soo sad.

I still want one.

I got one for my 7th birthday and I still have it. Mom tried to get rid of it years ago, but I threatened her with no grandkids if she did. :p

I begged my parents for a Sit-n-Spin and when they finally gave in and got me one, I was so excited.

And then I realized that Sit-n-Spins were pretty tough for former fat kids like me. After a while I got really bored with it. I think I only played with it for two weeks before I gave it to my cousin.

It's weird because despite being overweight as a kid you'd think I'd be all about the Easy Bake Oven, but I never wanted one for some reason.

carnation 11-02-2005 09:05 PM

LOL. My twentysomethings got a Sit and Spin back in the day (Strawberry Shortcake) and Ballerina, only 2, kept calling it their Spit and Sin. We still call them Spit and Sins.

CUGreekgirl 11-03-2005 01:39 AM

Go- Go my walking Puppy! I dont know why I wanted one so bad, I had a real dog that was about that size that I could walk anytime I wanted to. I still have it though. Its in my closet still in its box!

I had an Easy Bake oven and I loved that thing. I had a Rainbow Brite Sit 'N Spin too. I used it so much that I wore it out. I was always tiny and underweight so I could get that thing going fast. I wish they made adult sized sit and spins! I had a Snoopy Snow Cone maker too. Actually I still have it.

The one thing that sticks out in my mind that I never got was the Barbie Ice Cream Maker Playset that you could make your own icecream with. Unfortunately it was a hot toy that year. It wasn't sold in the JC Penny's catalog and thats where my Santa did all the shopping unless it was last minute. So I didn't get one.

Looking back the funniest Christmas was probably the one I was about 6 or 7 and I asked for "A Babydoll". My parents could not ever figure out which one I wanted so btwn them, Santa, and other family I got 15 dolls. Funny thing is that I really didn't have a specific doll in mind. I just wanted another one to play with.

BetteDavisEyes 11-03-2005 01:02 PM

O.K. In keeping with the spirit of the original thread, a gift I got that I just had to have & that I cried, begged, whined, & pleaded for was a pair of in-line skates. I finally got a pair for Christmas. I used them twice, got bored, & they ended up collecting dust in my closet.

SOPi_Jawbreaker 11-03-2005 06:11 PM

Ok, I also misread what this thread was about. The toys that I bugged my parents for and only played with a few times were the Slip N' Slide and the Guess Who game. On the commercials for the Guess Who game, the characters talk and say things like "not me", but I was sorely disappointed to find out that there were no talking people in the actual game. The Slip N' Slide was just plain painful. We had a very lumpy yard and I could never slide all the way down to the end. I'd only be able to get about half way down the thing.

BetteDavisEyes 11-03-2005 07:01 PM

This reminds me that I've always wanted a Twister b/c I've never played it but I've been wanting it for sooo long now that I'm almost afraid of buying one or playing one b/c it might be such a letdown. Gosh I'm a geek. :p

ADPiShannan 11-04-2005 12:13 PM

I had the easy bake oven, but it stunk. The food didnt taste good at all, it used to smell the house up.

I remember wanting the game systems and my mom would say no, why would you want one of those, they are for boys, so I never got one. I used to want to play my uncles nintendo, we were about the same age, but he said I wouldnt be able to because I was a girl. I used to sneak though lol.
