This is a joke, right?

OTW, do McDonald's in Hawaii offer pineapple on some sandwiches? I could have sworn that the one I went to did, but I could have also dreamt that up. It was a long, loooong vacation. ;)

LOL Kiki, I don't think I've ever had any McDs sandwiches with pineapples. I know a lot of other burger places do, but I'm thinkin McDs burgers wouldn't really taste too good with a slice of pineapple.

Our trash cans do say 'MAHALO' instead of 'THANKS', though. :p

Xylochick216 10-27-2005 04:01 AM

All the McDonald's in Australia serve beets on their sandwiches. They have a McOz burger, and they have Cadbury Flake and Cadbury Cream McFlurries. Yum :)

ETA: I forgot, they have Vegemite, Marmalade, and Curry Sauce as condiments.

_Lisa_ 10-27-2005 07:48 AM

I only came across one McDonald's while I was in Bangalore, India & I didn't eat there because the queue was around the corner, but I did look at their menu for a bit! McDonald's serves the McAloo burger instead of real beef-its a potato burger! They've got paneer salsa wraps (its got a mexican flavor to it-cheese, salsa, & lots of veggies) & veggie pizza wraps (like Totino's pizza rolls). Their non-veg menu had similar chicken & fish sandwiches on it & they had a sandwich that reminded me of a Big Mac, but it was 2 chicken patties on a sesame seed bun.

I also went to the McDonald's in France & Germany that served those thick potato fries as well as normal McDonald's fries. You can also get Dannon yogurt there too (well, at least in France!)

Beilieve it or not, the late Ray Kroc did try pushing a 'Hula Burger' as part of the SuckDonald's menu. And now, the rest of the story:

Quote:

Back in the 1950s, the fast food giant, McDonald's had a problem. Catholics who did not eat meat on Fridays would not buy burgers on Fridays. Friday sales were therefore poor in Catholic areas.

The solution? The "Hula Burger." Ray Kroc, Chairman of the Board, devised it. It was a toasted bun, covered with a piece of melted American cheese, mustard, ketchup, a pickle, and a slice of grilled pineapple. Note: no meat. And also, no buyers, or not enough. The solution was no solution at all. The Hula Burger died after a few months.

In 1962, the "Filet-O-Fish" finally solved the problem.

I'm kinda curious as to other McDonalds restaurants across the country. In Hawaii the McDonalds restaurants have the fruit punch, spam 'n eggs 'n rice and Portuguese sausage eggs 'n rice for breakfast, and Saimin (which is pretty much like ramen with garnishings). Do you know of any other McDs out there that have things on the menu unique to certain parts of the country?

In Oklahoma, we have brie and wine, caviar and lobster tail for McDonald's breakfast.

Can't find it elsewhere though...

There's a halal McDonalds somewhere in Dearborn, MI.

Don't forget that over in France and Germany, you can get a cold beer or a glass of wine to wash down with your Big Mac. (Or as the Germans call it, 'der Big Mäc'. The Filet-o-Fish is called the 'Fisch Mäc" and - yes, Vinnie Vega was right - a Quarter Pounder is a 'Royale mit Käse". And Europeans like their fries with mayonnaise.)

Seriously?

I've always wondered why they don't have halal or kosher ones here and I thought they didn't because they make everyone buy the same meat.

Does it taste different?

In Fiji, there are items like the Chicken McCheese and the Salad Burger. I actually visit a McDonalds in every country I go to.

McDonalds has a manufacturing specification for every item on the menu, and use local produce and meats where possible, if they meet specifications. They do take into consideration prevailing religious and dietary concerns.

Tickled Pink 2,

I was not kidding when I mentioned that McDonalds here serves Spam, Eggs, and Rice for breakfast.

Hawaii leads the nation in Spam consumption. A lot of it has to do with Spam's historical effect on the state, dating back to WWII. People back then ate it, their children was raised on it, etc. etc. It's hard to believe, but Spam's always been a part of local culture.

I think it was CT4 who posted an article when McDonalds announced they were adding it the menu here. It sparked a lot of "EW, that's just gross" comments, but I've been eating it 26 years -- and I'm still alive, so it's not gross at all.

Spam's not bad at all, people. If it were, I'm sure I would have had abnormal growths by now.

They used to sell the Shamrock Shakes in Canada (at least in Vancouver) some years back. They were pretty tasty.

And I gotta agree with OTW... I grew up on the stuff (down in Venezuela, it was called by the generic word 'jamonada' (literally 'ham loaf')) and it ain't as bad as people make it out to be.

On the other hand, I hate receiving spam in my e-mail.

OK-mental note-don't eat at McDonald's when I'm in Ireland next month! Thanks! :D

Xylochick216 10-27-2005 06:06 PM

I enjoyed the Mickey D's in New Zealand. They had McCafes in nearly every store with nice coffee drinks and pastries. The one in Rotorua (or was it Taupo? I forget...) has a real airplane for kids to eat on, too. We had to be big kids and drink our coffee up there :)

KSigkid 10-28-2005 02:00 PM

The McDonalds in New England will be replacing their coffee with the Newman's Own Blend distributed by Green Mountain. The thought is that they'd like to break the hold that Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks have on the coffee market in the region. If I remember correction (story in the Globe this morning), they're only doing this in their New England stores.

KATwoman 10-28-2005 02:03 PM

In Argentina they have little McDonalds stands that only sell the ice cream cones. Has anyone seen that in the US somewhere?

They sell Shamrock Shakes every year here in March in the Chicagoland area where Mickey D's is based. My husband works for McD and every year I have him bring me one home. I LOVE them...especially when he mixes it half Shamrock Shake and half Chocolate Shake...it tastes just like Mint Chocolate Chip Ice Cream!! YUM!!

As for the the ice cream stand someone else was talking about...they do have one like that inside Woodfield Mall (which is in suburb of Chicago), but they also sell regular food in their too. You can get numerous different flavors of ice cream and sundaes galore.

Also, I know somewhere in IN their is a McDonalds Cafe. There you sit down order on a phone from your booth and have a waiter/waitress come serve it to you. At that McDonalds, besides the burgers and fries, you can order things from meatloaf to spaghetti. Being not that far from IN I always wanted to go their and try it out.

DC_Zeta1920 10-28-2005 07:54 PM

I have noticed how menus tend to differ regionally and internationally. During my brief stint in Ohio, they had pizza on their menu. In undergrad, I did a paper for International Business on Mickey D's.

Otherwise, I have stopped eating McDonalds. The food has become sub-par. As a child, a periodic trip to McDonald's was pure excitement as was the occasional McDonald's birthday party.

Also, if I go in for a Vanilla milkshake, it better taste like it!

I'd heard that before (that Spam was popular in Hawaii), but didn't know if it were true, OTW. You live and learn.

Sometimes I had to eat it as a kid, if you know what I mean, but I never really liked it. On the other hand - the Spam, eggs, and rice reminds me of pudding (liver mush), eggs, and grits, (that's sometimes eaten in the South) which I like.... :o

I totally agree that Spam is an acquired taste, but we have this thing here called the Spam musubi...and it's a staple. Envision a slice of Spam atop a rectangular brick of sticky rice, with a slap of roasted seaweed paper wrapped around it. I know AlphaSigOU knows about it, and I'm thinking carnation, and maybe AznSAE and Bobby knows about it too. It may have been small, but it was a full meal that'd get me full no prob!

Then again I tried grits and I never thought I'd like it on my first trip to the South, but surprisingly enough this Hawaiian luuuuuuurved the GRITS!!!

That's the McDonald's Diner in Tipton, IN. Erniegurl00 is from there and whenever we would visit her hometown we'd go visit there too! It's really a cute place and it's pretty good to boot. Now in Broad Ripple, IN (part of Indanapolis) there's a 24-hour McCafe which is like a combination Panera/McDonalds with a player piano in it!

I like the deli sandwiches and soups in the McCafe. Sooo good! :D

CutiePie2000 10-29-2005 08:41 PM

When I was in Hawaii, I remember that they had fresh pineapple as a dessert thing. I also remember the saiman and the "Mahalo" trash cans. :)

I vaguely remember the green Shamrock shakes in Canada. Vile, if you ask me.

AlphaSigOU 10-30-2005 07:24 AM

All this talk of saimin, spam musubi, plate lunch etc. is giving me a hankerin' to plan a trip to Hawai'i! Hele on, brah! But I don't have enough vacation time and money saved up, so I'll hafta settle for the next best thing at the California Hotel and casino in Vegas in a couple o' weeks! :D
