i work as a teacher and a recreational counselor and i moonlight as a photographer.
at my job, on the weekends i will bring out the old faithful T-shirt that i have had for years and the fittted ball cap. at my old job, i had a plaque on my desk. |
The only 'nalia I've worn to work was a T-shirt. I don't think I would wear my jacket to work though. That's about it. :)
|
I wore my line jacket to work today. My job is basically a student environment, we have a very relaxed dress code. I'll wear para maybe twice a week (maybe like a tote bag or a lavalier) to work..
|
I'm wearing my jacket and a pin today.
|
On casual fridays I may wear a necklace (sometimes the kids want to know the meaning of it ) and or colors but not paraphernalia, and of course my desk has notepads -and a co-worker was the first to comment about that- and I carry my tote bag every day!
|
I have to wear something tomorrow. The flag here will be drawn at half-staff on Tomorrow in honor or Rosa Parks.
|
never, but i do have my frat mug on my desk. slacks, and dress shirts all day.

Paraphernalia on the job
I think it depends on the company's culture. If the dress code is laid back then yes, I think it's o.k. to wear your nalia. Otherwise, if one is not sure, to play it safe, don't wear it!

The VP of the call center in which I work for is a Soul Stepping Sister of AKA. On Delta's founders' day, a co-worker came in with her DST shirt one. The VP and I giggled, and she jokingly said, "Not in my call center she won't." I feel there is also nothing wrong with wearing the apparel as long as it fits the dress code. Although, I have never seen her wear any apparel on the job. I feel she doesn't need to. You can tell she's an Alpha woman by the way she carries herself. It's just her whole demeanor. So much style, class, and grace. Her mere essence will light up the place.

to my surprise
Sorry for raising an old thread . .
But let me set the stage . . . I'm comming out of the rest room in my dorm, and I notice that the kind cleaning lady was on the other side of the door. I politely step to the side as she opens the door. As she comes closer to me, I see that she is wearing a pink and green tee-shirt. On the shirt, the letters of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the shield, and a woman on a throne were boldly printed the shrit. I smiled and said "Ms. ___ I didn't know you were a member of a sorority" and she in turn replied "Oh naw baby, someone just let me borrow this" Needless to say I was like  . I was soooo surprised and thought to myself "is that even possible . . she just borrowed that shirt" . Personally, I would never think to were a shirt like that if I am not an official member, especially to clean in Again, sorry for raising an old thread, but I wanted to share this |

OMG!!! A boiling hot, steamy mess. I wonder if she borrowed it without telling the person she borrowed it from. Hmmm!?!? |

:( More like it was donated to her! Sorors be very careful with what you do with your paraphernalia! |
My job too is very laid back. I teach at a private middle school for boys so pretty much I can dress casually but not always. I usually carry an AKA bag.
Once I wore a pink polo and a Stop Hazing pin. Usually my kids don't notice my pins but this time they did. It was a perfect opportunity to discuss hazing and I was thrilled to. When I find that AKA teacher shirt, I'm going to wear that to work. |
Great question - nope - never (law clerk for a fed. judge). I do however have an AKA coffee mug, umbrella and pen set (very nice too - engraved and everything). It is so funny b/c my judge is in a fraternity (clear) and I was writing with my AKA pen one day, and he said, that is a mighty fancy pen!! lol!!

[When I find that AKA teacher shirt, I'm going to wear that to work. [/B][/QUOTE]
Soror, when you attend your Regional Conference, they normally have shirts that say - AKA teacher. I am trying to find one that says AKA lawyer . . . tough find though. |

I know I saw magnets that said AKA teacher, lawyer, social worker, etc. @ Regional Conference. I'm not sure if I saw the t-shirts - so much para to look at, lol. :) |
I work for a university and we can dress casual on Friday's. The UG Sorors stays in my office. I do wear nalia at work. I see nothing wrong with a person wearing nalia at work at all. But everyone has their own take on that.
|
Im wearing it right now. Usually I just do the colors and possibly a modest pin. I have the mug on my desk. My coworkers love it. Im one of their first exposures to post college AA Greeks. My birthday just passed and they all bought me pink and green stuff.
|
Unfortunately because I'm in HR, I don't wear much nalia to work, nor can I use it to decorate my office. I don't someone to come into my office during an interview from XYZ sorority and cause me problems if they don't get the job. I have heard people say that this person didn't give them a chance because they in were ABC or HIJ org.
|
I work in in a very "comfortable office", jeans sneakers, flip flops. I am the only AA minority in the office and we staff two floors, So like Soror mentioned, I am there only insight to BGLO. I try to break it down for them because they ask so many questions and I don't want them out there being rude and clueless(I like my coworkers)
BUT....I had to go off just last week. I had on one of my jackets because it was cold outside, it was folded over my chair so they wouldn't get started. I went to go to the copier and one of those"frat boys" was attempting to put it over his sholders so that everyone else could read it. When I walked out of that kichen and saw what was going on I almost freaked out, but instead in the nicest way that I could I explained to them how that was not the thing to do. I was on fire!Boy they could have got it that day over that! |

I work in a casual office and there are several BGLO's represented in my office. So I do wear my para on Friday when everyone else does. |
I'dda dug in that azz cause he's greek as well. Last year when my mother come from the Caribbean for my graduation, she grabbed my jacket from the closet as we were heading to the store. She doesn't understand the whole notion of BGLOs so I just simply handed her another jacket and told her it would fit better. She meant no harm so there was no need to get upset.

LOL. It's not funny and funny at the same time. I laugh at it now, but at the time I was mortified, thinking about Momma-Bajan up in Walmart sporting my letters.

Regional differences?
My chapter is extremely cautious as to when and where we wear our "official paraphrenalia" vs. other times. Like it is a "touchy subject" with them...
But since I am on a college campus, I represent... So since I am a professional, I just sport the combination of colors... In my mind, folks ought to know that I exude the confidence in my Sorority... ;) :D  Other than that, I mostly wear pink because from those "dayz" we had YET to wear pink... It was too HOT for us... So almost all clothing items happen to be pink... Although for this season, light green seems to be very popular... |
I work in a pretty casual work environment (so comfortable that one worker actually wore "footies!"))
I wear my Para all of the time as do some of the other greeks here. I also have a SIGMA GAMMA RHO banner on my office wall. My Sorors get a kick out of it when they come into my office and I get a lot of that, "My so and so is a SGRHO!" |
I work on a College campus so wearing paraphernalia is ones on choice. I wear paraphernalia some times when there are events on the campus. Now in my office I do represent well you can see that I Love my Sorority.

I have AKA items in my office area and have worn lapel pins and a t-shirt to work. I am in the Federal Gov't so things are laid back but it does depend on your office.
|
I think my co-workers are tired of seeing me in pink. They think it's cute though. However, since I work on a campus as well, I get to wear paraphernalia at my leisure. I try to keep it classy. The students are always so confused. Now my office.....frogs...pink and green galore. People always know when I send out flyers b/c of the colors. ;)

on a personal note, my job is being an RA, which is inherently, being a student. so para is what's up! in fact i try to wear it more as the weather warms up, as neos are coming out and as greek life in general is picking up here. |

Apparently, I used a wrong choice of key words in the search box, e.g., "sorors who teach" instead of "para on the job". Anyway ...
This thread has certainly enlightened me. I will be teaching Choral and General Music at a HUGE middle school this coming Fall, so I'm sure there will be a nice group of "non-clear" teachers roaming about. I know there are two AKAs on staff there at present, so I'm interested in knowing how they will sport their para. The idea of wearing one of my t-shirts to work doesn't sound like something I could do, ... not with a straight face at least, as it is probably my most obvious attempt at getting attention. :D But I'd definitely carry a tote bag. I also like the idea of placing handcrafted items on the wall or shelves, or even beautiful AKA ornaments for our desks. Oh, I can't wait! I'm starting to feel the school spirit already. :D Thanks, Soror AKA2D '91, for referring me to this thread. ;) |
My office is business casual, though I wore my letters to work for the first time last week via a professional training seminar the Ohio Society of CPAs have every year that we attend. I wore my golf shirt with the letters and "Columbus, OH Alumni Chapter" below it. Most of the professionals are dressed down anyway, so I blended right in for the most part. I didn't meet any Nupes or Greeks at the seminar, though I usually do other years, but at the Convention Center there was also a pastors conference going on, and an older fellow Nupe saw me and we greeted each other and chatted for a minute, so in essence it did pay off to have my letters.
I might have to wear nalia more often (via lapel pins and whatnot), there's an Alpha I work with on various projects and I can't have him one-up me on representing our respective orgs, knowhatImean? :D |
I have only a few times. I wore a shirt on Memorial Day since I had to work and the other two times were because I was going straight to some events right after work and both times were on a Sat. Other than that may carry a tote every once and a while but a lot of people at work often have on their line jackets and shirts. I guess it depends on where you work but as someone mentioned before just follow the dress code at work first.
