I'm glad to hear that you seem to be enjoying yourself during rush and hope that you get the house you want.

However, I would strongly encourage you NOT to do what I quoted again. You don't have to lie to people- that's not cool at all. There's no reason you can't just suck it up and go (if you have to- I don't know your campus rules if you have to go to all the parties).

Also, sorority members are friends with other people in other sororities. A girl in a sorority that's considered "bad" can have close friends in other houses that are considered the top, for example. People talk. People talk about different PNMs. It wouldn't take much for what you said to get around to the houses that you DO like.

You took the words right out of my mouth. It can happen, I've seen it. A girl in Blue could have a good friend in Red. Girl in Red confides to her friend in Blue about how boy crazy and weird you acted in her party. Girl in Blue takes this into account and presents this info to her sisters in Blue, who could cut you. So I'd be a bit more careful.

tinkgirl 10-10-2005 12:08 PM

Thanks! I will take everything you've said into consideration. I just assumed people couldnt talk to one another during recruitment, but I guess I was wrong. Well then I hope I didnt make a complete fool out of myself at red, and that its not going to affect blue.

**fingers crossed**

copacabana 10-10-2005 05:43 PM

Good luck darlin;) I hope you get the house you love!

Well i'm glad you at least know now so that it doesn't happen again!

People from different sororities can and do talk about PNMs and share info. While what happens during membership selection (i.e. voting each night) is secret, what happens during the actual parties certainly isn't!

Good luck!

I dont like there events, I dont like there foundings, I dont like the conversation I had with the girls. They sat us down and had us talk to ONE girl for 45 minutes. I talked to this girl about her major and applying for grad school and taking the GRE's. Not a fun conversation piece.

You are definately entitled to your opinion on chapters at your school, and I'm not really jumping on the fact that you didn't like them. But how can someone not like how a chapter is founded, many many of the NPC sororities are founded in a similar way. I guess I just didn't even look at this as a factor when I rushed.

sueali 10-10-2005 07:42 PM

True. I didn't really think of that.

tinkgirl 10-11-2005 01:31 AM

Pref night LALALA!!

I was so nervous I basically could not sleep last night. And when they handed out parties I almost didnt want to look at it. BUT EVERYTHING WORKED OUT GREAT!!! I was asked back to Yellow and then Blue!!

Yellow: So I went in assuming that I was going to be polite, strike up conversation with the girls, eat some good food and then leave. Not the case. I was actually so moved by their pref night that I left the room, quite concerned that I may have some serious serious thinking to be done before signing the pref card. The wrote us letters that broke my heart, and had 4 terribly heart breaking/warming stories. They gave us pearls to drop into a fountain and make a wish. It was absolutely adorable and I was really really happy that I pref'd them

Blue: The party began some what slow, the girl I was talking with, whom i've know for awhile and never really got to talk to during recruitment other than in passing, wasnt really great at talking at first. There were small gaps in conversation which i promptly filled in. I didnt mind so much, I just wasn't 100% sure what things I was supposed to, and no supposed to talk about. But I found out why she was rather silent later. The speeches were once again heart breaking and she was quickly moved to tears. She had been so upset over the party last time around she was still trying to gain composure while talking to me. There was a really sweet video and then a ritual that consisted of white roses and tearful whispers. I'm not in the house, but I was pushed to tears. PS I dont cry, ever.

Tonights rankings:
1. Blue
2. Yellow

While I felt really really bad about putting yellow as number two, I really do see myself in blue. I looked around the room and realized these girls are just like me. They make stupid faces when they dance, theyre quarky, they're not covered in make-up, they are just terrific, they like to have fun. I saw that in yellow too, but I just really really felt that with Yellow I trying too much, and I was pushing myself out of girl rather than true interest. But with blue, I just felt comfortable, I felt like I already knew the girls even though I had barely met any of them

Tomorrow is bid day, and I am so ready for this whole thing to be over.

IF YOU WANT THE IDENTITIES OF THE HOUSES, PM ME AND I WILL SEND IT OUT TOMORROW!!

Oh and as a side note. A few weeks ago I drew a picture of Blue's symbol, before i knew it was their symbol, and before i had even decided to re-rush. AND it has also been my background image on my computer for weeks. Its weird since its not a common thing like a rose or a butterfly or something like that its unique and soooo crazy that I just decided to draw it and post it!!

SoCalGirl 10-11-2005 03:30 AM

Good Luck. I hope you get blue. Also, fyi, yellow did not cob last year. :) They were well over total. :D

tinkgirl 10-11-2005 10:28 AM

YAY! Im really really glad yellow didnt COB, because I really like them! I would be really upset if they didnt make quota because there is no reason girls that nice, should be forced to do informal recruitment!

sueali 10-11-2005 11:15 AM

good luck today, hope you get Blue!

awesome

Tink
congrats on T H E T A

My best friend at school is a Theta, and though I know chapters vary from school to school, I am still convinced (having gone to boarding school in CT and thus having friends in college all over the place) that KAT is a fundamentally classy org. It seems like Theta never fails to produce chapters where the girls have a killer combination of exceptional intelligence and a super strong sisterhood that has fun doing pretty much anything (+ most everything their girls do = fun)
!

This thread is by far the happiest re-rush story I have read on this forum. By the end I looked down and I had literally bitten my nails down to the quick w/ out noticing because I felt so nervous for you when you were waiting to find out your pref night parties.

It is crazy how much your thoughts and impressions of the experience remind me of the things running through my head back during my recruitment a few years ago. My school also has 9 houses, and the overall range of chapter reps and personalities you describe is so similar in composition to USCs greek system that it made it impossible not to pair each of the “colors” w/ its SC equiv while I read ….

I know this post grabbed me mostly because, as a 2nd time rusher myself, I know how daunting the second try is no matter how the first one went (I dropped the second day Fresh year before I was dropped by any sorority save I because I realized I had no idea how rush worked was in over my head). My second attempt was an ultimately positive one, but while I was going through it I had no sense of how it was going to end or if it was even going well because in each round I received an almost surreal mix of very top, middle, and bottom level invites which made sense to no one .

Also interesting about your post was the variety among the chapters you ended up visiting after the first, in terms of where you ranked them initially, how you thought the chapter was perceived generally, and how you felt about them after spending additional time there. When you grumbled about going back to red, I knew exactly how you felt-- how frustrating it is to know that you have to keep going back to a place that you would not be willing to take a bid from and it takes the spring out of your step just thinking about what went so wrong at house x/y/z that you couldn’t be anywhere but there. Or when you talked about the Indigo girls being a bit too intimidating, I had a mini-flashback of being led around on a house tour of the top house here by two insanely beautiful girls and feeling like I couldn’t relax or drink or be comfortable even though they were actually girls I had more in ommon w/ than 90% of my rushers and I later become close with both girls and very close with one. Or when you wondered about green cutting you even though it was your favorite both times…. I remember being cut both years from my dream house even though I (sigh) also had gotten a rec………. and it was like being SLAPPED when I was cut Or how one house that I hadn’t really considered but liked right off the bat ended up being the one I realized I wanted but not before one that I had written off (though unlike yellow was not a lower house but the top one vs. my “blue” which is in the middle) actually gave it a huge run for its money.

…..one thing I wanted to tell you about Orange/Gold which hopefully is at least a little bit interesting for you……
….I can tell you for sure that in most place and at most schools if you receive a bid from a chapter in a given year, or had a good indication from a chapter that they considered you a good match for their sorority and EXPECTED you to pref….(as in you are someone they don’t think is destined for a “better” house) or you are someone who perhaps might not get an invite pref regardless of circumstances and so are being given a “favor” or are “lucky” to be invited to pref (ie not if the chapter hands out bids to all moderately pleasant girls and only becomes selective for the least attractive segment of the pnm pool in reality) AND that they felt they had developed a somewhat special relationship with you / you are certain you were a PNM who had caught the attention of that house to a degree where they would remember you a year later and that the group was legitimately distressed by your decision not to pref them…. THEN……… …….The likelihood they would invite you back into their house again even if you were Gisele Bundchen and had a 4.0 g.p.a and have told the house in question that you have your heart set on suicide rushing this year…………..is just about ZERO. It would be conceivable that they keep you around for one day extra or that they proclaim to have no memory of the incident whatsoever……… you still would have an far better chance of getting invited to Pref at SAE/ a sorority at another school than you would w/ the house(s) involved.

UNLESS ………….you walk into these houses and give them a story explaining your behavior the year prior that is literally on the level of plausible denial of ANY responsibility for the previous incident or something so terrible/ sympathetic that a reasonable person should be around 15-20% likely to get misty eyed when hearing it. Examples: “I was being mind controlled by space aliens,” “It was my evil twin sister who dropped out last year in order to sabotage me because she knows this is my FAVORITE group,” “My mother died on bid day last year when she succumbed to a heart attack in

Anyway thanks for sending me down memory lane and grats again!

I think she is saying that there was a snowball's chance in hell that tink would get the group(s) she went to preference for the year before (and who presumably she had interest in this year). Hey, if you went to my pref and put XO on your bid card last year and then dropped them, then you really didn't want us in the first place so we will drop you like a hot potato this year.

I too was confused but I figured she was imbibing with Earp :)

Denise

xo_kathy 10-12-2005 05:29 PM

OHHHH! That makes sense...

Well - she is now a happily flying kites so it's all good in the end!!! :D
