well, umm it's a Catholic school...so I'm not sure. Some people have a priest come bless their new home...guess its kind of like that.

sailboatgirl 03-08-2007 02:37 PM

Thanks for the quick response! I'm so obviously not Catholic! I didn't know that sometimes they have a priest bless their new homes...wow! My lil sis is Catholic (even teaches at a parish school), so I thought I had learned a lot from her about her different religious traditions! I shall ask her about home and car blessing now! Always good to learn more about other religions!:)

New puppy!

Ok...I have the cutest new puppy! He is an English Mastiff, and he is going to be huge! Mastiffs are like a passion of mine, I breed/show and raise them, but this is my new show star!! His name is Crisco, and he is so adorable! Here is my mastiff website if anyone wants to see all of my big babies!!! www.cedarknollsmastiffs.com
Enjoy...and I a proud doggy mommy!! :)

Totally random, but I love this time of the year! With the Kentucky Derby on Saturday we get out of school Friday for Oaks Day! All the stars are starting to come into town and everything just seems more clean and pretty this week!

Oh I guess I should mention I live in a suburb of Louisville, KY.

EPAP302 05-04-2007 12:18 PM

i'm so nervous! Tonight I'm going to Delta Sigma Phi's Carnation Ball and I've never been to any fraternity events. Also tomorrow they're having their famous Dragonfest so I have no idea what to expect haha. Wish me luck!:-)

EPAP302 05-04-2007 12:20 PM

One of my chapter's current new member is going to the Kentucky Derby this weekend! That's awesome :-) She's crazy about horses and she drove 9 hours just to go see the Derby!

sailboatgirl 05-05-2007 01:17 AM

After an unintentional dating hiatus, I'm putting myself out there again...and it looks quite promising! Go, me! :D

I totally forgot about getting off school for Oaks Day! I grew up in Louisville and definitely agree that derby time is the best part of the year. People just don't get it outside of Kentucky though. Slightly random, but this is the Random Thread afterall :p In other news, I'm taking the MCAT in a week, and it's just now starting to sink in...

sailboatgirl 05-07-2007 10:56 PM

Today was my last meeting as alumnae panhellenic president! Yeah! It's been rewarding but a LONG year! :)

Cute Skull & Crossbones Tank Top at Target

I just thought I'd share...I just picked up the cutest tank at Target for only $9.99! It's off-white/ecru with purple (well, plum, really) trim and has little purple/plum skull & cross bones all over it! Very cute and casual for summer!:)

KSUViolet06 05-31-2007 08:52 PM

I found an adorable black tee with a purple skull on it the other day at Wet Seal. :)

sailboatgirl 07-01-2007 11:22 AM

Okay, I posted a while ago about my foray back into the dating world...and it's now official...I HAVE A BOYFRIEND! As in, he actually asked me to be his girlfriend! I mean who does that anymore? He's an incredibly nice, intelligent, handsome and wonderful man! I'm very excited! :D:D:D:D:D

KSUViolet06 09-17-2007 03:53 PM

Well girls, I'm a grad student now and I'm really enjoying my classes!

In other random news, I love my new apartment. It's my first one ever :)

I'm also remaining involved with Sigma, since I go to grad school at my alma mater. I helped with recruitment and attended Bid Night last night where I got to meet my chapter's newest members. I'm so proud of them!

Random updates from the life of sailboatgirl...

Earlier this month, my alumnae chapter had our 75th anniversary celebration! I was on the planning committee, and although we didn't have as many in attendance as we would have like, we still had a great time! A good mix of golden violets, alumnae from several decades, and even some collegiates and a new member from our near by collegiate chapter. It was a very fun event!

Also, I'm still with the new boyfriend!!!!! And, we're totally in love! :D I've become a girlie-girl and am all smiley all the time! Things are still going well! He took me to Vegas for my birthday last month, and we're going out of state next week to meet all his friends and family from back home! Wish me luck!

Oh, and I'm home sick with a nasty chest cold! I'm just counting down the hours until my doctor's office can fit me in! :(

ilovetheviolets 09-20-2007 02:22 AM

So I thought I'd post here that I just got married (my wedding was 9/8). It was wonderful and Sigma-filled. I swear, the Sigma's took up the dance floor the whole night! My maid of honor was my Little Sisterand one of my bridesmaids pledged with me. Here is a group pic. of all of us. That's me in the middle (obviously) and the two girls on either end are the Sigmas. It's not the best picture...but I hope you enjoy! http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/phot...47836_7331.jpg

You look beautiful! Congratulations on the wedding...may you have a wonderful life together!

sailboatgirl 09-20-2007 12:16 PM

Okay, so I'm sill home sick (I have acute asthmatic bronchitis) and am TOTALLY bored! My sleeping patterns are all messed up from all the drugs the doc gave me, so I'm trying to stay awake today so that I can sleep tonight and go to work tomorrow. (Wow, did that even make sense?) I don't think I'm cut out to stay home all the time...I don't know what I would do without the internet!

SuperblySigma 09-21-2007 08:19 AM

Oh yeah, it makes sense! I've had to do stuff like that after long flights... stupid mean time zones. And bronchitis on top of that, aww, pobrecita!

And my random? Today I get to see the boyfriend, who texts me when he sees girls in Sigma shirts--'cause he knows I'll get a kick out of it. Just another reason it's so cool to have sisters everywhere.

Congrats! Did anyone break out Sigma song for you. At a recent Sigma wedding I went to, we all gathered around her and sang "In the Light."

ilovetheviolets 10-02-2007 11:55 AM

Nope, no Sigma songs...I was originally going to do our "Chug" chant...but decided it's too inappropriate for a wedding...not the best for a wedding. I did wear my pin inside my dress though and wore tons of pearls!

ShyViolet 10-09-2007 06:15 PM

Aww congrats, ilovetheviolets!! :D You look beautiful in the photo! Sigma weddings are so much fun. I was one of my Big Sister's bridesmaids as well when she got married a few years ago.

And glad to hear that grad school is starting off well Jocelyn. How are classes treating you now that you're a month into it?

Scotland is lovely as ever. I had an absolutely insane summer travelling for my research (London and Venice), a friend's wedding (I was her maid of honour) and dancing in the Fringe festival in Edinburgh for two weeks. Fun stuff, if tiring.

I can't believe I have less than a year to finish my PhD. Ack. I would like to know where my second year went and why my supervisor didn't make me write more (I have about 22,000 words so far of an 80,000 word thesis). But it will get done, and in a little over a year (barring any major disasters), I shall be Dr ShyViolet. hehe.

Sigma Love and Mine,
Laura

sailboatgirl 10-29-2007 11:22 PM

Just thought I'd post a few random updates...

-I'm leaving tomorrow for a mini-vacation (3 days) to San Antonio...the boyfriend and I are driving down there (it's like a 7 hour drive), so that should be interesting...it will be the longest we've been in the car together.

-I started a 16-week course last week at the synagogue to learn more about Judaism

-My collegiate chapter is having a tailgate on Saturday before the football game (they're hosting it jointly with the other Oklahoma chapter whose team we're playing)...I'm excited to go back and visit...it's been too long!

What is everyone else up to?

KSUViolet06 11-02-2007 01:43 PM

As for me, I'm surviving my first semester in grad school. It's been challenging but I enjoy it.

On a Tri Sigma note, I visited my collegiate chapter yesterday to welcome my new GRANDLITTLE! She's adorable!

I'm so proud of my girls as a whole because they've managed to get 22 new members this semester!

sailboatgirl 11-17-2007 11:28 AM

What is everyone going for Thanksgiving this year? Any fun traditions that you and your family or you and your chapter do?

I'm feeling a little nostalgic for Thanksgivings past right now...the new boyfriend and I were going to cook a traditional meal for my mother but now he has to go home to attend to some family business. So, it's going to be just my mother and I at my apartment. I really miss the traditional Thanksgiving dinners that I had growing up with my parents and my uncle. Not large by any means, but it was nice. It's hard when it's just Mom and I sometimes. One of my best friends/sisters invited me and Mom to her house for Thanksgiving but my mother doesn't want to go and be around people she doesn't know (which is a story unto itself!).

I love hearing family Thanksgiving stories...so share away!

ms_gwyn 11-17-2007 09:22 PM

hmmmmm

I am an adviser to a chapter....I am a member of the gold program.....had my first meeting after my initiation...

Things are moving very fast with sigma and I am loving it....

attempting to write a novel that isn't a piece of crap....

Thinking of moving across country for a change of scenery..

loving my job, but will most likely look for a new one....

KSUViolet06 12-04-2007 07:49 PM

My Big is now engaged! I'm so excited for her :)

ilovetheviolets 12-07-2007 10:39 PM

Congratulations KSU! My little was my Maid of Honor...it was amazing! My random is that my husband and I bought our first tree together. I am Jewish, he is Lutheran...so I've never had a tree. It was so much fun to decorate!!

Urgh - so I cracked a rib a week and a half ago (caused by my pas de deux partner trying to show me something he wanted me to do, slipping and landing his weight on my ribs) and it still hurts like none other. :( My doctor gave me painkillers which make me so tired that I'm prone to falling asleep at my desk every 15 minutes or so (much to the amusement of my officemate). Thank goodness I don't have to teach any early classes this week (or at all this term).

It's so frustrating to not be able to do a lot of the things I usually do (dancing in particular), as we're rehearsing selections from La Bayadere for a performance in May (I'm in the pas de quatre), and I have to finish the choreography for the Irish dance classes I teach... And I have to walk around with my hot water bottle, as I'm in too much pain to go more than an hour without it. I look like a real idiot when the red fuzzy fabric pokes up out of my handbag. Argh.

Thanks for listening to my rant - back to my thesis, I suppose. :/

Ouch. Best wishes for a quick recovery.

Thanks Jocelyn! :)

Compy died on my last week, I am slowly getting back into the groove. The loss that was the hardest was my email. I still have my old hard drive but the brilliant repair guys did not back up my drive completely like I asked.

Good News: I am going on a mini vacation next week to Boston to hang out with friends and dress up!

sailboatgirl 02-25-2008 09:28 PM

My major event at work was Saturday and went well! It was the first year that I did it "on my own" as my boss resigned in January, so I've been doing my job and hers! I'm so glad it's over, though!

sigmaceli 02-26-2008 01:06 AM

I got approved for graduation today! Here's to walking across the stage to pick up my fake diploma on April 28th! :)

All I need now to feel completely at ease is a phone call I've been waiting FOREVER for. More to come soon, hopefully....
