Sure, but way too many people blame being slovenly on medical issues. This is in no way scientific, but I'd bet that maybe 5% of people who are obese have an underlying medical problem that made them that way.

I doubt there are any reliable stats on the subject. But in any event, you're probably correct... I'll bet the vast majority of those who are obese are that way because they over-eat and don't exercise.

But, who are we to judge? My friend gets looks of disgust all of the time. I knew her when she was slim, and before she became sick. It's really sad how society treats her now. She tells me that either people act like she's invisible, or give her dirty looks. It's not her fault she's overweight. She's very ill with a fatal disease.

But she's still the same sweet Nancy I have always known. It's what's inside that counts. She'll always be my friend whether she's 110 pounds or 210 pounds.

Being an educated woman and a college graduate you ought to know that whenever someone uses the word "never" or "always" 99% of the time they're wrong. Just thought I might remind you of that.

I didnt literally mean "$100". The point I was trying to get across to you is that Pastor Osteen (if you actually believe he's a man of god in the first place) is taking money from the last people on earth he should be taking money from. I find it exceptionally greedy when you have someone like Joel Osteen on TV saying they know how to help people get out of debt and instead of actually giving the people the taped series or selling it for what the blank tape cost, they turn around and charge some crazy dollar amount and tell the people to get their series. Those people are the last ones that need to be spending money on a series to get out of debt. And when you have pastor Joel or anyone for that matter telling them it really works and they'll be freed from the "bondage" of debt if they get their series...what in the hell do you think those weakminded people are going to do? They're going to go buy their series and then turn around and make their kids eat Ramen noodles for the next month because buying Pastor Joel's messege was more important, either that or they'll be living off of food stamps which is basically my taxes. Pastor Joel doesnt care, preachers don't pay income taxes. And its not just people in debt. Lets take people that are in severe depression for example, people that need medical help. What is the first thing Joel Osteen says? "Don't go to the counsel of the ungodly. I have a tape series on getting out of depression that works" Ok, thats fucked up. Some of these people should really get some medical attention and spend their money wisely on stuff that is going to help them.....not on some tape series from some televangelist looking to hustle some sick individual. "i'm going to stand in agreement right here on national TV for your healing" What do you think those people are going to do at the end of his show? They're going to go buy that man's tape series or dish money out for his ministry instead of spending it on medical attention. And when that tape series doesnt work, what do you think happens? They go get free medical attention thus putting a strain on our medical system.

As far as TBN goes, every pastor that goes on that show knows that by going on there a world wide offering is going to be taken up for them. It happens at the end of each and every show, several times on that "praise the lord" episode. So yea, those vial serpents in disguise know whats going on.

I just want to point out something here. God provides the needs of his workers. Jesus didnt ask for money, the apostles didnt ask for money, Mother Teresea didnt ask for money like Joel Osteen, the shit was provided because they were truly led by god. Hell, Mahatama Gandhi didnt even ask for money and he wasnt even a Christian. These people didnt make individuals pay money for this or that. Why? Because they were truly there to HELP people. They didnt give a rats ass about making money or having an extravegant lifestyle. They truly wanted to help people and were led by a higher power. People like Joel Osteen are just following in daddy's footsteps regardless of their motivation or true calling if they even have one. It upsets me when you have people out there saying they have the answers to this problem or this problem in their taped series that you have to buy when they should be helping people and either giving it freely or at cost of what it is to buy the blank tapes or CDs. This is exactly why i don't go to church on a regular basis anymore. You have pastors out there driving mercedes and cadillacs while members of their congregation are living off of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches but continue to give money to the preacher every time they're in the church because the pastor says the bible says you need to tithe and then give above the tithe for blessing and increase in your life. Thats a crock of shit. When you choose a life of servitude (which is what being a pastor,rabbi, reverand, priest really is) you give up your earthly desires for money in hopes of doing god's work and helping other people. You're supposed to be doing it for the satisfaction one gets when they actually help people instead of doing it for that $1,000,000 dollar house or that black beamer sitting their driveway.

I might not be the best person in the world when it comes to things I say I do in my personal life off of GC. Yea, I've double teamed chicks, had 3 somes, had 4 somes, had 6 somes, been arrested several times, had an abortion, done all kinds of crazy shit in my college life. But you know I've also been on 3 missions trips, to Mexico, to India and to Botswana. I didnt go and lay hands on people to be healed, I didnt even go to tell people they're going to hell unless they get saved. I went to go help poor people and to let them know there is hope. I've seen with my own eyes the shit some of the poorest people in this world live in. And it's not pretty. Most of those people didnt even own the fucking dirt they slept on or the shantys they slept in. I gave a girl the equivelant of 35$ once and later found out that was enough money to feed her and her family for next 3 months. I got a letter later on from her saying that money enabled her parents to save money to buy a water pump so they could irrigate land and farm and that no words could truly thank me for what I had done. And you know what? That shit was for real. It wasn't none of this- "hey man, your love offering helped my ministry" kind of bullshit you see from people like Joel Osteen.

Probably people out there praying for me? I've had several whoes tell me I'm on their prayer chain. And my remarks are not out of line. This crap has been going on for far too long. If those women actually finished something they started in their fitness groups we wouldnt have this problem. The problem lies in the spirit of these people, they don't have perseverence. Obviously if they can't finish some exercise routine they started or don't have the will to help themselves...maybe they oughtta find a different religion.

No, it's not. My best friend developed lupus 8 years ago and has been on prednisone for quite some time. Her figure is gorgeous because she eats right and works out. I'm not doubting that your friend has side effects of her medicine/disease that contributes to her weight problem, but lupus doesn't make you fat. :)

You know, for a self-proclaimed heathen, you know your stuff pretty well. You are absolutely right, I never thought about it that way. But I think of it this way: Jesus went out and helped people in ways that we never could. My church has ministries and funds that help people and that couldn't survive without offerings and donations. Jesus healed the sick--we can help with your medical bills. Jesus multiplied food--we can buy your groceries. Jesus sat in the streets to tell children about Christ--if I did that, somebody would try to arrest me claiming I'm a sex offender, so we have the children's church. Offering money supports all of that, so I don't think it's unreasonable to ask people to give a love offering to a ministry. You just have to know the difference between a ministry and a scam. I can't speak on Pastor Osteen or whoever he is, b/c I've never even heard of him. It doesn't sound right that he's claiming to have all the answers and if you pay you'll get them. But if my pastor asks for money for such and such ministry, I'd be more willing to give if I knew I wouldn't get anything in return. Because I don't think it's as important to tell people "if you give money you'll get this in return." I'd rather hear "if you give to us, we can't give you anything in return, that blessing will go to someone who needs it." If EVERYTHING they got went to whoever the ministry's geared toward, there shouldn't be anything there for me.

Unfortunately, in today's world that doesn't fly with people. People, even religious people, can be shallow. I've seen GC threads advising girls to buy the best of the best in order to get into sororities, like what label their purse or dress is really matters. Well, some feel that no one will come to a small, run-down church, so they ask for money to renovate it with elaborate decorations and more space. Some feel that no one will give out of the kindness of their heart, so they have to make promises and give gifts to get the offering. Some feel that relying on God is too shaky for people to want to put faith in the ministry, so they have to act "holier" than they really are and claim that "God told me this and you can know it too" in order to build their congregation. I think society has sent out a lot of false messages and church's aren't immune to them. In the end, the human spirit is underestimated and churches/pastors sell themselves short. That's not all of the problem, but part of it at least.

BTW, you're comments were insensitive and tactless, but not all off-base. I could see why you said them, so I don't think it was all that bad. And yes, I do pray for you and I know I'm not the only one. Don't take it bad when people say, "Well, I'm praying for you" it's not a put-down. It's not because we all think you're some bigoted/foul-mouthed/egotistical/whatever else heathen who needs Jesus. Me, I just think you're a good guy who deserves a little prayer every now and again.

Honey honey honey...Pacific Beach is not the prostitute area...it's the beach area where college kids/young people/random old people live and is also a fun bar scene. You can drink on the beach here so pretty much every nice day on the weekends turns into one gigantic kegger. It's actually pretty fun, but there are definitely skanky "PB girls" and bums roaming around because it's a nice warm area. The day I see some girl turning tricks on the corner of Mission and Hornblend...I will definitely move far far away...;)

No, I'm being serious. Have you ever really looked at bums in detail? A lot of them have cellphones. How in the hell are you going to be homeless and yet have a cellphone? This brings into play my theory of how I think the government should punish poor people for being poor. Instead of punishing the wealthy with more taxes to help the poor, how about punishing the poor people for a change? That would solve a lot of problems.

The way I see things...poor people wouldn't be poor anymore if you took away their cellphones. If you're poor you shouldn't be allowed to have a cellphone. That would take a lot of people off of food stamps and welfare. There are tons of people out there who are on welfare and foodstamps but meanwhile they're racking up $300+ a month cellphone bills. Taking away their cellphones would also cut down on drug deals. Drug dealers won't pay for house lines because using them is too risky. If people can't get in touch with their drug dealers then they can't get any drugs.....thus eliminating more homeless people/crack addicts on the streets due to drug addiction sucking the life out of them.

Funny story related to yours: When I go to the beach on the weekends and my girl and I are laying out we see this homeless guy everytime walking around with a boombox on his shoulder playing some kind of music. The guy is obviously all cracked out. The creepy thing is when he just stands above women playing his music and everyone in the vicinity starts laughing at him or yelling at him to get the fuck on. It so funny because all the women at the beach who are laying out start covering up when they hear his tunes coming in the distance. I've always wondered how in the hell he always has batteries that work if he doesnt have any money.
