This is relevant for EVERY situation where a person goes through recruitment numerous times (collegiate or AI). It may sound harsh, but it is a question that we ask ourselves. |
Jocelyn, I've said this before, but I'm going to say it again:
I LOVE YOU. |
Oh ribs? Girl I am loving you! Let me whip up my famous potato salad to go with those ribs! I got my homemade mac and cheese to go with it too
Jocelyn, I love ya bunches :D Quote:

I sponsored an AI about 10 years ago, and I know the process was very detailed. AOII wanted to know a lot about what this woman could bring to the table. We aren't interested in fulfilling some Greek wannabee's teenage ambition. The impresison I get from Rollergirl's posts is that her interests are purely selfish. She wants letters on her sweatshirt, and hasn't mentioned anything about a desire to contribute to the org in some way. All I can think is thank you, God that she isn't pursuing AOII, and Alpha Phi and ADII, I feel for you.
Additionally, her posts remind me of someone who sends in a resume without proofreading it first. As a manager, I would toss those immediately. If a person is careless enough to send in a resume, which is a first impression, with errors, what else will they be careless about? Likewise, Rollergirl's posts are filled with errors, lack any tact, and are in poor taste. Not the best impression to give to Greeks when she is seeking Greek membership. |

Tell us what you really think irishpipes . . don't hold back so much . . its bad to keep things bottled up. ;)
That being said. . . I don't see a fundamental difference between rollergirl's situation and many of others that have gone AI. Except maybe that a lot of you seem to think she is a tool . . so we have to deal with snide comments. ITs myt understanding that there are two primary paths to AI that many organizations seem to share. One is where you have some type of connection to a specific organization. You are a faculty advisor. You pledged them. You have helped a chapter in some way. You have helped almunae chapter in some way. You are personal friends with some members. The second path is where you don't know anyone very well in an organization, have no connections, but have decided to come on Greekchat looking for a way to join any of the groups that will take you. I remember commenting a long time ago that Greekchat was actually going to create a market for alumnae initiation . .. and so it has. Which is fine I suppose. I think there a lot of people on here that will generously seek to help others seeking membership regrdless of the reasons. I think that speaks well for the openness of their spirirt. But again, I don't see how Rollergirl is all that substantially different from others seeking that second path towards sorority membership. If the organization doesn't like her, they won't accept her. Also. Just out of a sense of fairness. And i mean this in a larger sense than just this one thread. It ill behooves people that have pursued that second path towards AI membership to suddenly seem to become, and please forgive me for the harsh term, somewhat self righteous towards other people seeking the same path to membership via greekchat that they themselves took. Thanks for taking your time to read this. Quote:

Wow.... I never venture over here, but wow this is MUCH MUCH MUCH different than the Rush forum.
On a personal note: I have talked to Rollergirl on GC AOL chats, and she seems very intelligent and caring. Perhaps like most of us she was having a bad day and didn't exactly mean what she typed out. I know a lot of us do that at times. So let's hope instead of jumping down her back, that's what happened. I think instead of making snarky remarks or making fun of her we should help her think about why she wants to pursue AI. Lots of y'all were doing that and helping out. I just feel a lot of tension in this thread, and I think we can all benefit from backing down that tension. |

Some of her posts are locked and in the mod's corner, others are still out there. It's very much understandable for people to be upset in the way she's discussed some of these groups. Especially people who are members of those groups, they have every right to be upset. ETA: UKDaisy, are you sure you're talking to the right person in the chats? I haven't been a part of a chat in a long time, but I didn't think she participated. If you have talked to her, then maybe she should try to show that side of herself on here more. In any event, she's still a student. She can't AI right now. Which she does know. But I don't know that any group would take anyone close after their graduation- it just smacks of "i didn't get a bid so i'm gonna do this". I do think members of our glos trust other members to make membership decisions. If she wasn't right for XYZ during undergrad, she's not going to be right for XYZ right after graduation. Maybe after a few years of growing up and changing, but it's very unlikely that any group would even consider someone so close after graduation like this situation. |
