Soft drinks.

emleepc 06-15-2005 05:20 PM

I live in the South, always have, and call soft drinks "soda"........

If I want something to drink, I name it specifically, or say I want a beverage (adult or otherwise).....

AznSAE 06-15-2005 05:38 PM

i dont think i ever use any of the terms listed when refering to a drink. i just say that i want a dr. pepper, sprite, pepsi, etc. if asking someone, i say "what would you like to drink?" or "would you like a _______ (fill in name of drink)?"

queequek 06-15-2005 09:36 PM

Pop!

XOPrincess 06-15-2005 10:17 PM

Coke.

I had never heard it called anything else until I moved away to college. I remember the first time I heard someone call it "pop" and I thought it was absolutely hysterical.

tinydancer 06-15-2005 10:36 PM

Every time this discussion comes up, I remember the little mom & pop store near a school I worked in. They had a big ole sign in front that read:

COLE DRANKS

polarpi 06-15-2005 11:40 PM

Soda

Even after four years of school in an area where 80-100% of respondents on the map call it pop, I never changed :D

But now, I don't drink any of it

RioLambdaAlum 06-16-2005 12:23 AM

well since i can't remember if i posted on this or not before i call it POP!

dzrose93 06-16-2005 01:45 PM

It's Coke or Co-Cola...

Co-Cola is Coke only. Coke can be used to describe any soft drink. :D

The Truth 06-16-2005 01:47 PM

I call everything, except milk and water, juice. Childhood habit I guess.

PoohsHoneyBee 06-16-2005 06:22 PM

coke...everything is coke here... even if it's red

a.e.B.O.T. 06-16-2005 06:40 PM

coke

AGDLynn 06-16-2005 07:24 PM

Especially in Georgia:

#1: I'll have a Coke.
#2: What kind?
#1, Coke or Diet Coke or _________

If it is a co-coaler, that's a Coca Cola.

Me: I'll have a Coke.
Serve: We don't have Coke, is Pepsi okay?
Me: I'll have (anything but Pepsi).

Ditto. Pepsi is tastes sweet for me. I know it's really not that much different from Coke, but I just feel like I need to scrape my tongue after drinking it. No wonder some people call it robot sweat.

Susan_Renee 06-17-2005 01:01 AM

coke

AXi1257 06-25-2005 10:47 PM

Usually soda, but my husband says pop and I catch myself falling into his bad habits all the time!

In northern and central Cali, too, don't worry, the whole state's behind you!

ladygreek 06-26-2005 03:50 AM

When I was growing up in St. Louis it was soda or sodee :D. Since I have been in MN it is pop.

Yep, I say pop. However, I will always ask for a diet Coke in a restaurant. I prefer Coca-Cola products.

By Canadian law, the wait staff are supposed to say, "is Pepsi (or alternative Pepsi product such as 7-Up instead of Sprite) alright?" if they do not serve Coca-Cola products. Something about false advertising.

Like at our party yesterday; someone comes in the kitchen, and I say, "Do you want a Coke?" They say yes, and I open the fridge. "What do you want -- Co-Cola, Diet Coke, Dr. Pepper, Diet Coke with Splenda?"

My fiance says soda, even though he grew up here and has lived in the South his whole life. I fail to understand it, and it drives me bonkers.

You TN people are weird. My father has been living there for like a bijillion years and now he says Coke instead of soda. Mountain Dew is not a coke. Pepsi is not a Coke. Actually, a Diet Coke is not a Coke, it's a Diet Coke.

Soda I say, Soda!

kdonline 06-27-2005 02:08 PM

Funny...I was just corrected on this over the weekend.

I'm from Miami...we've always called it "soda."

Now that I live in Seattle (today marks one year!), I'm told it's "pop."

It's strange for me to say "pop" in referring to soda - that's what we called my grandfather! :)

SigmaChiCard 06-27-2005 02:29 PM

everyone i know says coke.

i say soda

i can't stand it being referred to as pop

tallgreekalum 02-08-2007 02:17 AM

In New England we used to call it "tonic" but nowadays, soda.

Oh well, don't feel weird. I'm a Seattle native that grew up with "pop" but after being in Calif. for four years, I now say "soda"...even though I've moved back to Seattle.

cutiepatootie 02-08-2007 03:06 AM

I say pop even though i hear soda the majority fo the time. Give me a Dr pepper anytime:)

_Lisa_ 02-10-2007 09:39 AM

I've always just called it what it is-a coke is a coke, pepsi is pepsi, etc. I never used the terms soda or pop when asking for a drink.

BetteDavisEyes 02-10-2007 01:18 PM

When I say coke, it refers to Coca-Cola or Pepsi depending on what the restaurant serves. Otherwise, I ask specifically for a Sprite or Dr. Pepper.

Amen! I love confusing people by asking for coke...in Dr. Pepper form. ;)

The sad thing is now that we've been in the non-south for over 6 years, my sons are referring to soda and correcting me every time I use "Coke" instead of the "proper name"...it's heartbreaking but what can you do?
