essence magazine usually has a listing from time to time on the best salons overall.

if you have medium to long hair, dominicans are the best. the do what is called a doobie which, if i remember is a roller set. they are very cheap!

I miss my doobies :( lazy California stylists don't do them out here

Soror, I have recently moved to LA. Know any good hairdressers? And why is everyone telling me that most women get presses in Southern Cali? I don't have the time or patience for somebody to stand over me frying my hair every other week. Then what about when I want to go get my hair wet at the beach (was just there yesterday). How do people do the press in such a water-plentiful place?

Horror Story: I have fairly long hair when I press it so a few years ago, I wanted to get my hair pressed. I went to the salon for what I THOUGHT was going to be a routine wash and press. So the beautician tells me I need a trim and so far I'm cool with it but I start to notice that she's been "trimming" for awhile now. The hair that was once down my back is now at my neck. This chick cut SEVERAL inches of my hair off. I was LIVID but my hair has since grown back to it's original length but I will NEVER, EVER, go to a salon AGAIN!

I hope you didn't pay her. One of my good friends beat a beautician down for doing the exact same thing. I really think some of them do it on purpose

Unfortunately, I live in San Diego and I'm only here for another couple of weeks. But from what I hear it's across the board though. You have to fight with the beauticians here to get a simple doobie wrap. They are too lazy to roller set you and put you under the dryer. They'd rather blow dry your hair and press it rather than wet set/ wrap it, and they STILL wanna charge you an arm and a leg for half ass work. On top of that, I prefer the "Chi" over the stove curlers but they only use those in hair shows out here!! Lawd I can't wait to get back to the south! I remember a Soror on another board commenting on how Californian women had that "unwrapped" look. :D

edited to add: Several sistas that hate getting their hair fried have suggested that if you're gonna stay out here you should invest in a sit-under dryer (they run about $30 give or take), purchase the hair products from the salon, and maintain your own hair. Otherwise, you're going to pay an arm and a leg for nothing.

Since I'm south of L.A., I can't give you a recommendation, Soror.
I still get presses on my short hair before I slap the half-wigs on.
And because I wear wigs, I don't see the point in spending a grip of caysh. I go to John Wesley Beauty College in Long Beach when not in S.D.

Excuse me Soror! :)
My fault. LOL

Soror, it's crazy. I was speaking with hairdressers at three salons yesterday and they don't do what they call "wet wraps." Like you said, they basically sit you under a dryer, dry your hair, then curl it. How is that a WRAP? It's not...and I'm not paying 50 for it either. A sister promptly called up the neighborhood beauty school and my appt is for tomorrow morning...the cost is still 23.00 which is dang near the price for salon quality elsewhere for a wrap.

I also asked at the salons about spirals. Spirals are 65 and they have never used any brand relaxer that I have ever even heard of. What the heck is Design Essentials? Can I get Affirm, Mizani, Dudleys, something that someone else has heard of? I got a fix for them b/c my hair dryer will be here when my furniture arrives in a week or so. And pressing is not an option b/c it takes too long, I'm not holding my ear while some fool sizzles my hair with heat and it is $50 for a press and curl! WTH? ...just came back from the beauty supply store.

These hairdressers need to spend a little time in the South where all real hair is done. Even during the time that I was in Chicago, everyone wore a wrap so the hairdressers weren't ask skilled with the styles as what I was used to in the ATL - but at least the hairdressers knew how to do wraps!!

I'm through with these fools.

The only saving grace is that a mani and pedi is only $25 for both services. :)

Soror, I thought to ask you but I need that you were much further south of me. I will figure something out. The Inglewood hair school may work out! LOL

LOL, that's one of the few things I miss about Cali. Yesterday i got my nails, feet, and eyebrows done for less than $20  but I'm glad you're investing in the hair dryer, these folks crazy
