Hell, Rosa Parks got famous for refusing to sit her ass down on a bus. Ask any public school bus driver, black people do that every day. Its just Rosa Parks, at the time, was a secretary for the NAACP. I'm not saying Dr. King wasn't a good man and wasnt marching for a nobel and just cause...he was. But what the hell did he really do other than walk around like Jesus and give sermons? He got shot and was killed, big deal. So did other civil rights leaders who dont have a day of rememberance. But since he was the first that gives him the honor of having his own holiday and none of the others who had the same unfortunate ending? C'mon, puhhhlease. Ya'll need to stop lying to yourselves......MLK and Rosa Parks didnt do anything but walk around crowing like a chicken and refuse to sit down on a bus, Jesse Jackson wont ever be president, and Barry Bonds has been on steroids for a long time now. You people need to wake up.
Craig, I've never seen you look more of an idiot than you do now.

That's probably THE most insensitive thing I've ever read here on GC.

I don't think any place closes for Hanukah because its a minor Jewish FESTIVAL. You celebrate after work/school. But places would close for Yom Kippur/Rosh Hashana. Sorry, big pet peeve of mine...people thinking Hannukah is the big Jewish holiday just because it falls near Christmas.

But as far as this thread....I think you're being a bit ridiculous. Its a day off from school (well I'm still on Winter break for the next two weeks) so whatever. That's cool. My dad gets to chill at home with us. MLK did quite a lot...as a white, Jewish American I find it almost insulting that you get TOed that everything closes. Give the black people some respect. White Christians have had it for long enough. Please stop whining when something little happens to you when the Jews and blacks and everyone else have gone through so much more than your people ever will. kthanksbye

I can't imagine we're the ONLY city in the nation with a road named after King that isn't in "the hood."

Maybe I was, but you're up north....right? You guys dont have as many black people who live up there as we do in the south. And out of all those high-rent office buildings and a few city government buildings.....would you say a great % of that area is populated by black people? I'd say a very small % if any at all. Also, I was talking about ghettos with the street name. I wasnt meaning commercial districts.

ZTAngel 01-17-2005 05:16 PM

Oh Christ, Craig, I know you're not really that ignorant. I sometimes feel like you post these things because you know it'll get under people's skin.

FSUZeta 01-17-2005 05:26 PM

i agree with ztangel

it appears that this post was started to just get something started! it also appears that cashmoney may have been spurred on by a recent viewing of "barbershop" and is loosely quoting eddie when referring to rosa parks, jesse jackson and mlk. the only difference is it was funny in the movie!

cashmoney 01-17-2005 05:29 PM

Man, its late in the day and I'm ready go. I've been fired up all day long. I still have to go home and grill out for my roomates and I tonight. I ate publix sushi for lunch and I'm still hungry. I'm sorry if I sounded insensitive to any of you. :o

FSUZeta-

I'm just pissed because I've had to deal with this all day. One client of mine, in particular, has a commercial account with me. Well, he couldn't come down here to pay his premium because all his employees (who are all black) left their job to go to the parade at 10am and never returned. Well, that ment he couldnt get down here and pay the 10,000$ he owes for his insurance. So, inorder for me not to lose him as a client, I have to take the heat from the insurance company as to why he's going to be late on his payment. It makes me look bad as if I got some rag tag shit going on. And its all because of the holiday. Stuff like this has been going on all day.

We have one in that other big city in Wisconsin that a lot of money has been spent on revitalizing...and to think, they call us segregated. :p

Pittsburgh Public schools always got Yom Kippur and Rosh Hashanna (sp?) off. We also got MLK day off. Oddly enough, we always got the first day of deer hunting season off  which is ridiculous.

At Otterbein, we always get Columbus day off...don't know why, might be the whole living in columbus thing ,but I think it's a pretty stupid holiday to have off.

I dont understand why banks are closed, the post office is closed, schools are closed and many insurance companies are closed today for MLK day. I don't think its right that everything shuts down for this guy when we get nothing for George Washington's birthday or Lincoln's birthday and FDR's birthday. We don't even get anything for Kennedy's birthday. What has this guy actually done that gives him the honor of having half the nation close down for him? Yes, what he stood and fought for was a noble cause....but Abe Lincoln, who abolished slavery, doesnt even get a day of his own. Lincoln was killed just like MLK. I just think MLK day puts the good Dr. King above many great leaders who did a lot more for this country than MLK did. If its all about civil rights leadership and those who pioneered it, why not give Malcom X, Dr. King and Medgar Evans a day for all three and not just MLK day? When you go to an all black neighborhood you dont find a Malcom Blvd or Evans drive, but you always see a road called MLK. If I was colored I'd be furious. What are some of your thoughts?

There's no need to comment on your comments. However, who is Medgar Evans? I don't recall hearing of his contributions to the Civil Rights Movement. What did he do? Just curious.

RUgreek 01-18-2005 03:13 AM

Oh I remember him, from the movie Ghosts of the Past. I remember when Byron De La Beckwith finally died in prison, fucking freak should of hanged years ago...

Here's a weird and most likely insensitive question to pose. I know the term colored is offensive, but back in elementary school we learned that the color black is the absent of color, so why didn't call them non-colored. It's a really stupid and pointless question, but this post made me think of stupid things...

Never mind.

I don't know who Medgar Evans is. However, I am familiar with Medgar EVERS who served as the NAACP Mississippi Field Secretary.

 Please! This is the most ridiculous thing. "for someone relatively new?" Has she not been initiated yet? Lets get on with her pledging then, and THEN she can be as "punchy" as she likes? while thats not the most disrespectful thing in this thread by a long shot, it IS the most petty.

Sorry, Im just kind of tired of the way people treat "new" members to this board when they dont say things that those with high posting counts like. (as if racking up your post count by naming songs or listing wedding locations, or *whatever* makes your opinion/comments more worthy)

ok...done now...go back to yelling at whoever about MLKday....

IrishPhiSig 01-18-2005 04:44 AM

that is absolutely ridiculous, AOPi girl. Yeah, he is controversial, he wants controversy...so I'm giving it to him.

I am actually quite hesitant to keep visiting these boards. Everyone thinks they're better than everyone else here. Everyone loves to tell people what to do. Everyone loves to get offended. Everyone loves to tell the new kids on the block that we're too new to talk about this or that. How about all of you take a deep breath and....

GET OVER YOURSELVES

i came to greekchat to talk to my sisters and other greeks and just plain have a good time and get to know other greeks and their perspectives. But, apparently I can't do that! Everyone else here can respond with no issues...me? Nope...too new to post my, just as educated as yours, opinion. I am so sick of being treated like a 5 year old.

Not to put too fine a point on it but you won't find any non-Jewish-owned businesses, or non-religious Jewish schools that close for Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur, or Passover for that matter. As if Yom Kippur would ever be a statutory holiday. Last time I checked, mail still came and banks still opened on religious Jewish holidays. Even in New York. Maybe Hanukah was a bad choice of holiday but the intention is right. The reality is that the calendar is FILLED with holidays that not everyone celebrates, or, as it appears, agrees with and/or understands. I could be ticked that the country doesn't shut down on the holidays I celebrate or recognize but instead I'll sit back and enjoy the paid days off I get because other people deem it a worthy day to recognize.

I'd be more than happy to wait a day to get bills in the mail or go to the bank to pay them.

CarolinaCutie 01-18-2005 12:59 PM

Although pretty much everything you said in this thread has been completely and totally ignorant, Cashmoney, I wanted to comment on something you had in your original post. You suggested that we substitute MLK Day with Kwanzaa as a national holiday. Do you know what Kwanzaa is or what it's about? I'm guessing no. Although I do not personally have an opinion on the appropriateness of Kwanzaa celebration, many African Americans choose NOT to celebrate Kwanzaa because of its origins, instead choosing to focus on Christmas because they are Christian.

People speak on sh*t they don't know about...

Thanks for that.

Kwanzaa is a MADE UP holiday. MLK day is giving honor to a man who did A LOT for the civil rights movement. BTW, if you don't like things being closed for 1 day of MLK, then try 7 days of Kwanzaa.

this is splitting hairs. i was pretty much trying to say that Jewish owned business would not close for Hannukah. Places with large Jewish populations, etc. will close for the major Jewish holidays, but Hannukah is not one of them.

and opi...it is quite offensive...but as the AOPi girl said, I'm too new to get offended on here.
