I loved it! It was so bizarre. If you love the types of movies discussed in this thread, check it out. Here's a synopsis:

Jim Carrey stars as Joel in this offbeat romantic comedy about a guy who opts for a procedure in which memories of his girlfriend, Clementine (Kate Winslet), are erased after he discovers she's opted for the surgery, too. But as his doctor (Tom Wilkinson) begins to wipe out traces of Clementine, Joel decides he doesn't want to lose what's left of their relationship, so he squirrels away the memories he wants to keep somewhere else in his brain.

I haven't seen it, but I really want to. I might actually rent it tonight.

Any Zalman King movie

Any movie produced or directed by Zalman "Red Shoe Diaries" King:

Wild Orchid (very obscure storylive, countered by super hot sex scenes)--I saw this when I was 18 and the ending was like WHOA! Let's just say that Mickey Roarke's doubletalk through the picture was well worth seeing to the end!

Nine 1/2 Weeks. Another obscure Mickey Roarke flick

Boca. Rae Dawn Chong was never seen in a better light. Another obscure South American setting flick.

Soror, I told a fib. I have seen this movie and I LOVED it!!! Me and my roommates rented it about a month ago. Yeah, I liked it. I just didn't know what the name was. :)

Is that the movie with the woman who lost her house and she tormented the new occupant? I heard it was horrible.

Oh, Drop Squad. Man, I had a list of people I wanted to drop! That came out in '94 during my militant days...whew!

Re: House of Sand and Fog - I read the book first and couldn't wait to see the movie. I was a bit disappointed. It was watchable (at home in the comfort of my bed), but it didn't do justice to the book. One of my Iranian friends was pretty offended by the book and the movie, so that challenged me to watch it from a different perspective. If you're interested in the story, I'd suggest the book over the movie.

I still know a bunch of folks, some on GC, that I would LOVE to drop, lol.

I saw it way back in '93 or '94 and only one or two scenes out of the whole movie. I fell asleep during the flick (it was very late).

Requiem for a Dream

Mulholland Drive - Saw it, think I loved it, but can't quite comment on it yet.

Ok, so this was my first Netflix movie last night. I liked it, cuz I like movies like this (that cause headaches, lol). And it made me feel all sorts of crazy. But you know what else? The mother's part was THE most disturbing to me. I felt the same way about her part as I did about some of the stuff (the blue box and the play) in Mulholland Drive: it scared me. There is something about the colors in the film during those parts; they are too vivid or something cuz the rest of the movie is so dark. They freak me out and make me glad I have roommates. Sometimes stuff like this scares me far more than actual horror movies. *shivers*

Anyway, it was really good. If I had seen this while I worked at the school, I would've definitely shown it to my girls. I'm going to have my friend show it.

I love Netflix. :)

Please explain that blue box to me, cuz it left me mad and confused.

I have to agree on Go being good, as well as Life of David Gale..

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE EXPLAIN DONNIE DARKO TO ME?! lol

Tickled Pink 2 10-18-2005 10:26 AM

The Beach - I know quite a few people didn't like it - but I loved it! The idea of utopia...

Vanilla Sky - I loved this as well. I thought the ending was great.

The Fifth Element - Excellent!

UrbanizdSkillz 10-19-2005 05:17 PM

Would somebody PLEASE explain 12 MONKEYS to me? I just don't get this movie!

Lady of Pearl 10-19-2005 10:04 PM

I don't know how obscure these are but surely not mainstream:)

old movies: Buttefield 8 ,Breakfast at Tiffany's, Anything Hitchcock, Eve's Bayou ,Daughters of the Dust, Sankofa. A little more known but not exactly top boxsellers!

I didn't either - wasn't it some sort of biological disease or conspiracy going on - and Bruce Willis knew about it, but you couldn't tell if it was real or if he was crazy.....?

But I gotta add:

Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas (Johnny Depp & Benicio Del Torro)
The first hour was hilarious, even though I didn't understand a thing that was going on! Movie is crazy...

The Jacket (Adrien Brody) just weird...but ok.

Birth of a Nation is a classic. Racist, but classic. I would try Black videostores or college libraries.

She Hate Me was very thought-provoking. Alot going on, but thought-provoking. And Anthony Mackie looking all...um...woo...didn't hurt AT ALL!

Crash...I found VERY distrubing! The autoeroticism...mmm, naw

I loved the last Emperor...I like John Lone..he did another movie called m. butterfly and he played a woman who played cho-cho san. Didn't make a bad looking woman either but I know his voice for some reason so i knew it was him right away.

I would have to agree with :

Eyes Wide Shut....that movie was weird...leave it to Stanley Kubrick...

Has anyone seen Dead Calm...that is an interesting movie..long but very thrilling to the point of weirdness.

GREAT THREAD!!!

I, too, am a big fan of "outside-the-box" movies that challenge my way of thinking!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one! :D

I agree with all of the "thumbs up" for Mullholland Drive, even though it *was* totally WTF (that's David Lynch for ya). Same for Requiem for a Dream. And, co-sign with those who gave a "thumbs down" to Vanilla Sky; I just wasn't feelin' that as one of my WTF films of choice. :(

Even though it wasn't necessarily obscure, American Beauty is one of my all-time favorites. 1999 was a good year in film (i.e. AB, Magnolia, Being John Malkovich, etc.).

As far as fairly recent films I've seen are concerned, Dirty Pretty Things and Swimming Pool were good. I wasn't feelin' Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or Adaptation (with the exception of Chris Cooper's Oscar-winning performance), both Charlie Kaufman films. I guess they were both just too "out-the-box" for my taste. Another highly-acclaimed film I had mixed feelings on was The Dreamers. All these critics were saying it was the best thing since sliced bread, and I was just like  . I think they *felt* as though they *had* to praise it since it was a Bertolucci film.

But, there's one obscure film that has resonated with me since I saw it a few years back: Irreversible. The story runs "backwards" similar to the way Memento did; it stars real-life couple Monica Bellucci (with whom I share a b-day {Sept. 30} :)) and Vincent Cassel (the "Night Fox" character in Ocean's Twelve). For those not familiar with the plot, check these links out:

http://www.nord-ouest.com/site/irreversible/

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0290673/

It was very controversial for two scenes in particular; it was reported that many theater patrons walked out due to the graphic nature (I witnessed someone walk out when *I* saw it). But, as a self-proclaimed movie critic, it's been my strong belief that such scenes in movies aren't the "be-all-and-the-end-all" of the entire film, just a part of it (i.e. the infamous sex scene in Monster's Ball; I digress  ). It's what people talk about, but it's not the whole story. Just my humble opinion. :o

At any rate, it's worth checking out, even if you have to turn away when watching those particular scenes.

In general, I'm a big fan of indies, foreign films (namely French), and certain British comedy (ala Four Weddings and a Funeral, Love Actually, etc.). One of my fav places to see these types of movies is back "home" in Alaska at a place called the Bear Tooth (http://www.beartooththeatre.net/). I've been so deprived living down here. I can't wait to see some quality films when I go back this summer!!! :D

PM me or send me a message on Facebook for more! :)

Thanks again for this thread!!!

I thought Mulholland Drive was WTF too. Mostly because of the box. But what didnt you like about Requiem? That is one of my favorite movies.

Soror, if you are EVER in Cincinnati, we have to have a movie night!!!!! Our movie tastes are very similar, and I agree, '99 was a great year (and not just;)) for movies.

I have put Irreversible into my Netflix queue.

Now, Fear & Loathing... I couldn't sit thru it. Maybe I should read the book. I can sit thru the most incoherant movie, but this one was superbly done cuz I felt like I was high as h*ll. I couldn't hang.

Ok, more movies I've seen. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, HILARIOUS!!! Just as dry in humor as [i]The Royal Tennenbaums[i]. I loved it. I thoroughly enjoyed The Butterfly Effect. I need to own that. Run, Lola, Run was also a good one. I thought Dirty Pretty Things was OK, not as great as it had been played up to be, but it was good. Also, [i]Dark Days[i] was REALLY good!!! Documentaries are my newest addiction. Netflix is my enabler. :)

I *did* like Requiem (it was also nice to see Marlon Wayans in a dramatic turn :) ). I was just "co-signing" with what I mentioned about how I felt about MD. Sorry for the confusion. :(

LOL, soror! It's a date! :D

And, yes; '99 was a good year in other respects as well (namely in music). I guess there may have been some sense of urgency for something good due to all the Y2K drama. :p

We've seen most of the same flicks; I'll have to check out Dark Days. I'm also feelin' docs these days. There were a lot of good ones that came out last year and in 2004 (i.e. Super-Size Me, Oscar winners Born Into Brothels and March of the Penguins, Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room, Murderball, Mad Hot Ballroom, Grizzly Man...just to name a few :p ).

LOL about your Netflix addiction; I'll get around to signing up myself one of these days. :D
