my second semester of graduate school started yesterday. last semester i only saw like 2-4 students wearing greek letters to class.

Erik P Conard 01-11-2005 11:20 PM

rush class mates

my senior year...made it a point to sit in a different
part of the classroom much of the time
struck up conversations with guy on either side of me
invited them to the TKE house for dinner
all came; most pledged
all made their grades
I had 17 pledge sons my last year and all went active
just another way to share the chance to be a part of
The GREATEST youth movement ever!

EPTriSigma 01-12-2005 12:38 AM

I have tried a similar approach this year. It works surprisingly well. I feel it helps to get the kids that would have typically over looked greek life. I personally was one of those. I would have never thought of joining a sorority had I not been befriended by a member of a sorority in one of my classes.

Wellllllll - It's not in a class but it is on campus. I just saw a pic of one of the Deans for Nyack College and noticed she was wearing what looked like an ivy leaf. I was like AKA??? But, I haven't had a chance to ask her.

What do you all think?
http://www.nyackcollege.edu/2004content.php?id=172

(Or do I just have Greek fever?????? And, I think I see Greeks everywhere?? LOL!)

Woops - BTW - if you see various typos on that page, don't worry...I'm trying to get the school to fix them!

PhoenixAzul 01-20-2005 07:08 PM

I'd place my bets that she's an AKA. I saw a woman wearing a very similar pin today.

Well, I'm interning, which techincally isn't a class, but I get class credit for it so...

I work closely with a Delta Sigma Theta, and have parked next to a car with a Kappa Alpha Psi license plate frame, and when I have visited schools, two principals have had fraternity plaques in their offices (one Alpha Phi Alpha and one Kappa Alpha Psi).

Yesterday, in the parking lot, I saw a KD car from Auburn, but I don't know who it belonged to.

:)

KDwxgrrl 01-21-2005 03:05 AM

Well, the only people I ever see are in my major. So my senior meteorology class includes:
1 KD (myself)
1 Kappa
1 Phi Mu Alpha
2 Sigma Chis
1 Pi Phi

In some of my classes that the juniors mix into, we've got a Phi Sig, a handful of Tri-Delts, a Sig Ep, and a Gamma Phi

In my class for the honors college, it's just me and a Pi Phi (same one as up there). We get funny looks for wearing our letters  Too bad the all-sorority GPA is a 3.3, and they don't know that!

It's been confirmed by another faculty member. Dr. Simons is an ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA.

I was also told that there are a number of Greek faculty members. Such good news! Nyack College doesn't have Greek life so there aren't many Greeks (only ones that transfer and I've never seen any.)

I'm a graduate student, and I wear letters all the time. So do several graduate greeks I know, but maybe its just my campus (Ga Tech).

KDwxgrrl 04-04-2005 07:10 PM

Yeah I'm going to the University of Wisconsin next year for graduate school, where there is no KD chapter. I'm holding on to a few pairs of letters that I'll probably wear on occasion. We also make homecoming hoodies with the letters for our "pairings" on them that are really nice, so I'll wear those too, since they say "Valparaiso University" on them. But probably won't wear KD gear very often at all, which will be a big switch - I wear KD stuff almost every day right now! I'm not sure how I'd feel about wearing it too often if there was a KD chapter on UW's campus, too... having the girls think "who's that random girl in my letters?" :p

I start grad classes this summer, and I most likely will be wearing letters--why not? About 99% of my t-shirts have Delta Zeta on them anyway.

SATX*APhi 04-04-2005 09:06 PM

There are several greeks in my classes. The couple of greeks in my social psych class, including me, all sat in the same area of the room on the first day without even knowing each other were greek. I sit with a Tri-Delt and Phi Delt.

Also, the greeks in my First Aid & Safety class all sit together. In fact, I am presenting a project on Wednesday with an Alpha Gam.

It's a research group. The Georgia Tech Library has one of the largest archives of science fiction works in the country (figures ...), and so to publicize it and make it more accessible, student researchers get class credit or undergrad research grants to work on this website: www.sf.lcc.gatech.edu (it's being redone and is kind of hard to navigate at the moment), which discusses the collection according to different topics in SF. I've got a page on the site from last Spring dealing with racial issues in American science fiction, and this semester I'm working on two projects - 1) reproduction in science fiction, and 2) representations and implications of the sex act in science fiction. We've also put on a couple of conferences related to SF/fantasy at Tech.

Sorry for the rambling, you've unwittingly gotten an academic off on the subject of her current research ... :p
