Uggs makes plain old shoes too and they are super comfy. So please don't judge the whole brand by those hideous fuzzy boots.

Also the last time I wore a poncho was about 1973 and if I remember correctly it was orange and brown or some equally awful 70's color combination.I don't think I could bring myself to wear them again.

bruinaphi 10-19-2004 05:38 PM

UGGs were not designed just for cold weather. They were actually originally designed for surfers. People in SoCal have long worn them with skirts, pants and skiwear. It's a cultural thing down here. I've had them since high school (that's a LONG time for those who don't want to do the math).

There is a big difference b/w the ponchos worn in the 70s and those that I wear today. First, the yarns that are being imported from France are immeasurably better. Second, they come in way cooler colors. Finally, they are a great way to keep warm when you go out to the movies, to a sporting event or for a walk on the beach. You can throw them over just about anything and have them look cute. My bestfriend made a ribbon ponch to match a bridesmaid's dress she had to wear recently. It was gorgeous!

Man, I hope so! I saw someone wearing some furry pink uggs today and I was like "How Come?" I was thinking the abominable snowman got a bad dye job!

Laura, I did NOT know that UGGs were orginally made for surfers. Cool :) But NOT the furry boots!

I have to admit I am not feeling the ponchos. Reminds me of the scary crocheted ones I had back in the day that friends of my mom's made me

I would love to relearn to crochet and knit though

I crochet, and I've been wearing the ponchos I've made for several years now. People always either made fun of me or raved over them, but I was the only one until this...this...trend came along. Now all the people who laughed at me are sporting them, but the worst thing is, when ponchos inevitably become "like totally so 5 minutes ago," I'm going to look ridiculous wearing mine.

OK Tri-Deltas...I know you are totally jealous of the stylin' Pi Phi poncho...so here is a little something with a dolphin motif for you.

Back view too!

I just bought a really cute silky poncho and I like it alot. I don't really care for the big woolly ones though.

I agree in that situation that rainboots are stupid...BUT

I work in a part of Newark that was filled in wetlands, meaning it floods because we are at sealevel. Probably below it. My entire hometown (not newark) is practically at sea level.

That being said, the $20 that I spent on galoshes has been the best investment this season. Now I don't ruin my shoes or get wet feet.

ETA: UH-OH, SOME ONE BROKE OUT THE RITUAL TRIDELTA PONCHO!!
where is that cat-suit thread...one of my favs...
oh yeah, THAT LADY IS SCARY!!

tunatartare 10-19-2004 09:33 PM

Oh man, that dolphin poncho sure is snazzy. Almost makes me wish I was a Tri Delt. Do they by any chance have anything with stars or lambs?

And only $200!!! What a bargain. So much more versatile than those silly $100-some pajamas that spammer advertised on that other thread!

this is true...

Didn't ponchos try to make a comeback about 4 years ago, and didn't really get popular?

I got one the other day for my birthday, but I haven't worn it yet. As for Uggs, I like the plain ones. I spent last winter in Columbus, OH, and it was SO COLD! They kept my feet nice and warm. I don't like the multi-colored ones or the super fuzzy ones. I don't like them with mini skirts either. I hate the "Raising Helen" movie poster with Kate Hudson wearing uggs with some pretty short shorts.

I don't remember ponchos, but I vaguely remember capelets. I almost bought a vintage one during the time..but again, I thought better of it.

Jadey28 10-22-2004 11:36 AM

A thank you goes out to Jessica Simpson for wearing her tan poncho throughout the first season of Newlyweds...we can blame her for the newest trend. Well, maybe not her completely, but I bet she helped tons!

DGqueen17 10-22-2004 01:15 PM

I have one but I've never worn it out. I dont think I ever will. At least it was only $16.

DGMarie 10-23-2004 12:35 AM

Woo-hoo! What swingin' chicks! Do you suppose they're going to Studio 54 tonight? :D

amycat412 10-23-2004 02:51 AM

OMG DG MARIE... lol

I love my ponchos, but they are all of the shorter, hip length, can still see I am thin even tho I am busty variety.

:) Plus they are soooo comfortable. I truly cannot reccomend anything better to go see a movie in. More comfy evewn than a sweatshirt.

Excuse typos please, am drunkity drunk drunk drunk.

PoohsHoneyBee 10-23-2004 09:33 AM

I'm not being mean to my friend, believe me I love her to life!

But, ponchos are good for her, because she tends to wear shirts too small. She has one poncho for everyone of her dress up outfits (mostly black, diff material). So ponchos actually make her outfits look cute.

i love her, she is so great!:)

Peaches-n-Cream 10-23-2004 01:32 PM

I had a poncho like that when I was a little girl. It was like an afghan blanket with a hole for your head. My grandma and her sister in law liked to knit or crochet them. I forget which.

Did this ad really say that is it "warm as two hugs"??? I was unaware that hugs became a measurable unit of thermal efficiency.

sairose 10-24-2004 06:23 PM

Well I actually like ponchos...thing is, I bought mine at least a few months before it caught on in Arkansas (hey, it takes a while for fashion to catch on here LOL) and I loved having something unique...until everyone else started wearing them. Ugggh. That always happens to me.

I'm sure some GC scientist can figure out a BTU-per-hug conversion...
