Lol, no need to feel stupid. Briefly, there was a chick on here who was posting about how she wanted to start a sorority called Sigma Kappa, w/ their colors and history and stuff. So then everyone told her she couldn't b/c that's just wrong. So then she was like, "Well, I'll make it Sigma Kappa Epsilon" then in another thread was like "I'm starting a sorority called Sigma Kappa Epsilon Pi" but was still going to use their colors and history, motto, etc. It was this HUGE ordeal. What was her name - cristinasmiles or something? I'll have to do a search for the thread. It was really strange and very frustrating. If you do a search for SKEPi it might come up.

I can't remember how SHIM came about. Basically, it's a play on the letters - "SHIM" like a she-man.

ETA: Oh, looks like MysticCat beat me to it. :)

Here's the original thread.

Here she is again, a year later.

kddani 10-05-2004 04:39 PM

then she came back a couple months ago and wanted into on starting a chapter of KD and basically the same thing again!

she's a GC legend!

valkyrie 10-05-2004 04:45 PM

Did she participate in Dance Marathon while she was forming a sorority?

You guys, I promise that someday I'll stop with the Dance Marathon comments...as soon as I find the sorority that lets you be your own sponsor for alumnae initiation.

Rudey 10-05-2004 04:53 PM

At University of Chicago:

Phi Gamma Delta: somewhere between 50-60
Kappa Alpha Theta: 60 last I remember

These are in no particular order.

Sororities:
1) ZTA
2) AZD
3) KD or ADPi or TriDelta

Fraternities:
1) Sig Ep
2) LXA
3) Pi Kapp or Kappa Sig or Sigma Chi or DU

I am pretty sure it was said during recruitment that AZD is the Largest. As for the others i dont know.

OK the SHIM joke is not only corny but off-topic.

THAT IS CRAZY. My sorority (Alpha Phi at West Virginia) has 100 girls, and I remember when I pledged I had the hardest time trying to learn everyone's names. How do people do it at such a big chapter like those at Ole Miss??

TNPhiMu 11-20-2004 11:30 AM

Well, there are only 3 fraternities and 3 sororities on my campus, but here it is anyhow:

Sororities:
Phi Mu (56)
AOPi (41)
Alpha Gam (25)

Fraternities:
Kappa Sigma (???)
Sigma Phi Epsilon (35... but soon to be 37!!!)
Kappa Alpha (around 13)

WVU alpha phi 11-20-2004 12:15 PM

I think most of the top sororities at my school have around the same number of girls.
Alpha Phi, Kappa Kappa Gamma, Alpha Xi, and Delta Gamma all probably range from 85-100. The other sororities probably have about 75 or something, so they aren't considered bad or anything.

I'm not sure on the numbers for these frats, but the biggest ones are Sig Ep, Phi Sigma Kappa, and either PIKE or Delta Tau Delta. If I had to guess, they all probably have around 80 members. We have a lot more frats than we do sororities. Some of the smaller frats only have about 25 members.

ACTDXDeltaDeut 11-21-2004 02:45 AM

At Berkeley, I think in terms of frats:

1) Pi Kappa Phi - 55
2) Phi Gamma Delta - 51
3) Tau Kappa Epsilon - 47

Sororities:

1) Alpha Omicron Pi: 120+
2) Gamma Phi Beta: ~110
3) Delta Gamma: 90+

Umm, I have several friends in the greek system at Berkeley and I think you really have the sorority numbers wrong.

From what I know from pretty reliable sources, I would say Kappa, Pi Phi, and Tridelta would be the largest chapters there and have been constantly for numerous years. I would also maybe add Alpha Phi to the list.

Not to argue, but the biggest frats on our campus is right around 50. The average right now is 37 guys per fraternity. I had to go to about two months worth of meetings last semester b/c the school was trying to figure out ways to help us get our numbers up.

Depending on how this semester goes-how many pledges make it-the largest will still be right around 60 tops.

Wow really? I had no idea they were all that small. I guess it kinda makes sense since there are like twice as many frats as sororities, so it makes sense that they have half as many members. I mostly know phi sigs the best, I thought they had about 30 just living in their house?

Coramoor 11-21-2004 10:24 PM

I don't know them that well. I have a classes with a few guys down there, but we don't talk about frat stuff. Plus...I don't know who they actually count. The university counts full time undergrad males. If you don't have full time status or if you grad in December, or if you had to drop all your classes, they didn't count.

WVU alpha phi 11-21-2004 10:27 PM

Coramoor, a little off topic, but did you guys end up teaming up with chi o this year for homecoming due to alpha phi's "unfortunate circumstance"?
I talked to Frank at elements one night and I'm pretty sure thats who he said you guys ended up with.

DGqueen17 11-21-2004 10:28 PM

I'd like to see WVU get some more sororities. Of course I'm not real sure how rush went this year since I had to go alum:( and haven't been around.

I'd love if we got some more sororities, but I'm not sure where they could get houses. The old KD house (right behind mine) looks really pretty from the outside, I've never been inside, but I know WVU uses that for expansion dorms now.

I heard earlier this year we were supposed to get ZTA and they were supposed to rush in the spring, but I haven't heard anything about that in like 2 months.

I think WVU first needs to get more girls to rush. This year quota was only 30, which was the same as last year, but hardly any girls dropped out after the first day, so basically not as many girls rushed. This surprised me cuz I've noticed WVU has been drawing from more southern states lately (I see like 4 Texas, Tennessee, and Kentucky license plates a day) so you'd think if those were girls, they would probably go through rush.

That's true there isn't anywhere to put houses unless WVU wipes out Sunnyside and so generously builds a few (as if that would happen).

I'd like to get KD back. And ADPi. I think a chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta would do well here because I always see girls wearing AGD shirts around campus.

I think the biggest problem with rush is the girls rushing KNOW what sororities are considered "good." And if they don't think they will get a "good" house they will drop out and rush again in spring or COB the "good" houses. Whenever I rushed I knew a lot of girls that did just that. A few of them COB'ed and are now my sisters.

But that was back in the day Fall "02 haha.

honeychile 11-21-2004 11:32 PM

ROTFL!!!!!!

I know AT LEAST TEN WVU ADPis who would kill to have them back on campus!!

If you're not having many people drop out of rush, it does sound as if your Panhellenic should consider a new colony.

I'd like them to come back too. Who knows, I've heard through the grapevine we may a sorority leaving soon.......

The bad thing about expansion at WVU....

The sororities here arent always *ahem* welcoming to new groups.

Yeah, Panhellenic put us with them and sigma chi They also tried to make us do Mountaineer Week with the same pairings. It ended up that us and sigma chi were paired with pi phi for that.

If you look around there are a lot of houses in the area between where the Beta house is to the north, Price street to the west and frat row to the east that used to be fraternity or sorority houses. I just wonder if the university owns them, or if they only have some sort of contract to rent them.

Talking to alumni, there used to be like 20+ sororities and just as many fraternities twenty or thirty years ago...

I'm all about bringing more chapters on campus-although I've heard too many guys and girls bitch that another chapter would take away from their numbers...I strongly disagree with that. I think that the more chapters here, the more we exposure we will get and it will bring more people in. It's hard to convince people when they are only out for themselves though.

Yeah I definitely can't see WVU wiping out Sunnyside considering it houses like five million students! Thank God it's remodeling Sunnyside though, what an eyesore.

I do know some girls only want to rush the "good" sororities. I think another problem might be the stereotypes that come with all the sororities. I had a few friends rush this year and I predicted where they would end up, and for the most part it was true. Stereotypes are always hard to break.

I've seen a few AGD shirts around campus too. Did they used to be at WVU?

I think it would be a great idea to bring more chapters to WVU, too. I know we're encouraged to wear our letters a lot early during the first semester I guess to kinda get the word out to freshmen that greeks are around on campus.

I can see how people would think another chapter would take away from their numbers, and it might like the first 2 years or something. But I think the more sororities and fraternities, the more people would want to join. The more greeks, the better!

Maybe I should try to get on Panhellenic next year.. :p

Believe it or not, I've heard the same three mentioned! But then again, one of my favorite ADPi friends locally went to WVU.

And the fact that WVU alpha phi (for one) didn't know that ADPi had been on campus means that there's been enough time elapse for any leftover resentment or other negative problems to be around.

Now, don't quote me on this, but I believe these are the standings as far as Sac State (CSU, Sacramento) goes:

Fraternities
1.Tau Kappa Epsilon
2.Kappa Sigma
3.Sigma Phi Epsilon

Sororities
1.Alpha Phi
2.Alpha Chi Omega
3.Delta Gamma

I actually heard at our founder's day today that the Phi Sig chapter at Sac State has more ladies than the DG chapter.

lyrica9 11-22-2004 04:54 AM

Fraternities (guessing by the size of their pledge classes this fall, because i really have no definite idea):
1. Sigma Chi
2. Kappa Sigma
3. Lambda Chi Alpha

Sororities (what was announced in panhellenic, may or may not be exact):
1. Zeta Tau Alpha 89
2. Chi Omega 88
3. Kappa Kappa Gamma 85

all the sororities are fairly close in numbers though because the other three are:
4. Alpha Delta Pi 83
5. Pi Beta Phi 81
6. Alpha Phi 78

and total is 75, so that's pretty good that we're all over total.
