It is Kappa Alpha Order. (there is a kappa alpha society as well)

And yes Kappa Alpha Order does have alumni initiation :) ....that would be my guess as well.

trojangal 12-09-2004 07:56 AM

Good luck tonight!!

Mike, good luck and congratulations on your initiation tonight!!!

mightymike 12-09-2004 02:19 PM

All very good guesses. I'll hold off telling everyone until after the initiation, but another hint is in order.

Ok, I have nothing better to do. Let's see here.....

As far as I can tell, these are the "Southern" fraternities (I could be missing a couple):

------

Alpha Tau Omega *

Delta Tau Delta

Kappa Alpha Order *

Kappa Sigma

Phi Lambda Chi

Pi Kappa Alpha

Pi Kappa Phi *

Sigma Alpha Epsilon

Sigma Nu *

Sigma Phi Epsilon

------

The ones with an asterik I know have AI.

Carolina Panthers:

- Located at Mike's college
- Was on campus with Pi Kappa Alpha

Colts:

- Has a colony in the area
- Was not at Mike's campus

Tampa Bay Buccaneers:

- Was on Joe's campus as an undergrad, but they left
- This group is special to AXiD670
- The history and ideals of this group remind Mike of a major part of his life.

Mike's Clues:

- Some number and letter gibberish for the "technically minded".
- Some more number stuff.

Right, now to crunch clues:

- I can elimate Phi Lambda Chi because it's such a small fraternity that the chances are lower this would be the one. I can eliminate Pi Kappa Alpha because Mike indicated that this was not it.

- Though, when he said "not quite" in reponse to a guess for Pi Kappa Alpha, I could take it to mean that the group is Pi Kappa Phi. After all, they are only one letter off and "not quite" the same. ;)

- Hrm...I was just thinking that December 9th seemed kind of late in the year to be holding initiation. Unless of course the ceremony was in conjunction with say, a Founder's Day event. Funny that, Pi Kappa Phi's founding date is December 10, 1904.... of course, Kappa Sigma's founding date is December 10th as well... but why wouldn't they just have an event *on* the 10th?

- I think I can eliminate Sigma Nu. I think Sigma Nu is possibly the Buccaneers. AxiD670 said that this group held special meaning to her but wouldn't tell us why. As I understand it, Sigma Nu is Alpha Xi Delta's "brother fraternity". Also, she commented that Mike liked this group because it reminded him of a special part of his life. I notice that Mike has a quote from a Marine in his signature line. Perhaps he's in the military? Sigma Nu was founded at Virginia Military Institute.

- The Colts have a colony in the area? What area? I could assume that Mike lives near AXiD670, who I think is in North Carolina. The fraternities with colonies in that area are Delta Tau Delta, Kappa Alpha Order,

- I can't figure out Mike's first clue. The first pile of numbers and such don't make sense to me. KLPDaisy, that isn't leet speak! LOL :) The numbers could be a distraction and his comment "for the technically minded" the real clue? As in, founded at a tech school or chapter located at a tech school. My dad was in the US Army Signal Corps as a decoder with Top Secret clearance - perhaps he'd understand better than me....

- The second one was more numbers. Hmph...typical of a man to give crazy clues. :p 32.78 - 79.94 = -47.16. For some reason, October 16th comes to mind via yahoo; though, I can't make that date work into anything.

Pah! Methinks I think too much! :) Hrm......ok, well, I guess I'll just go with Kappa Alpha Order, Pi Kappa Phi, and Sigma Phi Epsilon as my guesses. Maybe someone else will be inspired by my ramblings and figure something out? Or maybe I can just wait a few more hours and see what Mike has to say. LOL! :)

Congrats Mike!!!!!!

.....Kelly :)

Latitude and Longitude of that Location

So maybe the group was founded in Charleston? I'm guessing Pi Kappa Phi.

Ooooooo you're smart! Numbers were never my thing, so I'm glad you recognized what they were.

So, based on my reading between the lines of Mike's comment, the corresponding date, and your finding the geography coordinates, I'd say Pi Kappa Phi sounds like it's a likely winner.

Go go Gamma! :D

Can't wait to hear! I hope it went wonderfully!

Tom Earp 12-10-2004 12:18 AM

11:30ish, U got to be kidding!:)

He will be celebrating with His New Brothers!

While AI is done in NIC, it is not the Norm and I think We should take some instructions from NPHC and NPC Groups.

LXA does some limited AI, but it is for people who have shown themselves outstanding in working with Chapters or Advisors after they have shown they will stay for the long haul.

There have been many G C members who have Been Initiated within many Sororitys and have shown themselves to be very involved.

Just read the many of those who are so involved and worked, spent many hours, and stressing out over hearing something from The Ideal Organization.

KUDDOS to each and everyone of You!

Mike, cannot wait to hear who you Affiliated with. Remember, it is just a start, I have been doing it for 40 years and love every minute of it!

Also would like to know what happened to aggiedoc.:(

Well Kelly, ....

either you majored in criminal justice or (like axid670) watch too much Law & Order.

At any rate, the first clue is a 448bit encryption blowfish algorithm. I didn't expect anyone to get that one. And yeah, I work with computers all day. So, we know that it's from the South and the third clue that I gave was the latitude and longitude coordinates for Charleston, South Carolina.

So, with all that said, tonight I was alumni initiated into Pi Kappa Phi.

woohoo!

tunatartare 12-10-2004 12:59 AM

Woo hoo! Congratulations to you and PKF!!!

hannahgirl 12-10-2004 01:11 AM

CONGRATS!!!!!!!!

Jill1228 12-10-2004 01:27 AM

hehehehehe.....neither! I'm just a dork. :p Seriously though, growing up my dad and I used to work our way through those logic puzzle books. I like trying to figure stuff out. Plus my Gamma Phi Beta sister really "put the nail in the coffin" with the map coordinates.

AOIIsilver 12-10-2004 08:44 AM

Congrats from an AOII and a Pi Kappa Phi!

FYI: On an interesting note, Mr. Silver's best friend was also alum initiated into Pi Kappa Phi this past weekend, and he is sometimes called Mighty Mike, too!

Congratulations on Pi Kappa Phi! Pi Kapp is a wonderful organization and one of my favorite fraternities at my school!

mightymike 12-10-2004 12:54 PM

Thanks again everyone for the encouragment and the congratulations. This is something that I've been looking forward to for some time and to finally be able to join the fraternity that I was so involved with at undergrad is incredibly exciting. The men that I've worked with through my advising has been very worthwhile and rewarding - even without the initiation.

For the other men and women seeking AI, it's a process but don't give up. The trip is well worth the ride.

My 15 minutes are up. :)

Taualumna 12-10-2004 01:44 PM

Congrats, Mike!!!!! :)

Congratulations to not only You, but to the Brothers of Pi Kappa Phi.

Congrats to you and Pi Kappa Phi!

pinkyphimu 12-11-2004 12:40 AM

congrats mike! we are all excited for you! it is awesome to have a different perspective on ai...and of course for you to get the wonderful opportunity to experience fraternity life.

trojangal 12-11-2004 09:11 AM

Mike, once again, congratulations!

Pi Kappa Phi is a great organization, and one of the groups that I usually hang out with when I go back for Homecoming. They were a wonderful chapter when I was in school, and they are just as good now. They know how to treat their brothers right!
