You're not going to be best friends with everyone in your chapter. I know when AXO colonized in 2001, there were 86 women who helped the process. Some of these 86 were best friends, some knew no one, and some had people they couldn't stand in the chapter. But you know what? It didn't matter. There were so many women in the chapter that they didn't HAVE to be best friends. It's the same in every chapter on campus. You'll never get over 100 women together and have them all be best friends. But you learn to respect your differences because of what you share within your GLO :)

Jessy4069 09-29-2004 03:50 PM

That is very true... Thanks for the insite....

I am just so nervous about bid day.... 9 days left!

JupiterTC 09-29-2004 06:58 PM

For some reason, I'm not nervous (though I probably will be next Thursday!). I'm just enjoying the process, and learning more about Tri Delta. This is probably because I've been through formal recruitment before (I'll tell everyone about my previous recruitment experience after bid day), but who knows.

FYI, the field consultant will call girls who did not receive a bid next Thursday night . So it's the "dreaded phone call" syndrome again. But hey, if Jessy and/or I do not get a call next Thursday, then we get bids on Friday!

Think dolphins...;)

Jessy4069 09-29-2004 09:14 PM

Does any one have any input on whether it is better to go towards the begining or towards the end so they remember you for interviews... right now I am scheduled for the 1st day durring the last spot... ANYONE: Let me know if you think this is a bad idea!

I have gone through rush before as well... but I didnt pledge. But for some reason I am ALOT more nervous now then I was before, prolly because I really want Tridelta!

Trust me I will be sitting in my room all night praying that I dont get a phone call!

Good Luck Jupiter!

mmcat 09-29-2004 11:36 PM

all the best to both of you....
may there be no "phone call" and only joy.
good luck to you.

MaggieXi 09-30-2004 08:46 AM

Hopefully neither one of you will get "The Phone Call" and all will be good with the new Tri Delta Colonization.

Remember though, even if you don't get a bid to be a founder, they will be participating in Recruitment in January. You can always go through again.

One of the girls who is also rushing tridelta... well lets just say we have drastically clashing personalities. I know TriDelta is the place for me... but i am really worried that if we both get bids how it will work out! Has this or something similar ever happened to anyone?

My heart is in TriDelta and its where I know I belong, but I am getting more and more nervous about what might happen the closer it gets to Bid Day!!!

Anyone got good advise?

Quite honestly, I couldn't stand my roommate and she and I both wanted Alpha Phi, and both received bids. At first, I almost counted Alpha Phi out because she refused to look at any other sorority but them. But I realized that with 30 other girls, I could avoid her if I wanted to, and only occasionally have to work together.

I found out that the problem was that we just weren't really a good match for roommates. We even cried together at Pref Night our senior year because not only was it our last one, but it was our last one together. You never know what will happen in 4 years.

Jessy4069 09-30-2004 12:23 PM

Thanks astroAPhi!

Thanks for your insight... Hopefully things will turn out like the way you and your old roommate!

JupiterTC 09-30-2004 11:47 PM

One week until bid day!!! I'm soooo excited!!! :D

JupiterTC 10-04-2004 01:59 PM

Does anyone have any tips on interviews??? Mine is on Thursday, then bid day is Friday!

Jessy4069 10-04-2004 02:36 PM

I am preparing by thinking of questions they might ask in the interview... and going through my answer...

I am horrible with interviews! It isnt an accurate view of who i am... so I am trying to be prepared as I can for this interview!

adpiucf 10-04-2004 02:57 PM

Tips on interviews

Dress classy. This isn't the time to look trendy. You're dressing for "the girls" who are most likely national officers and older professional women.

Write out a list of questions -- things you want to know about the organization. Bring this list with you.
(IE: What will dues be like? Will there be a house? How many spots are open? What is the new member period like? Will there be alumnae support? If I become a member and I am interested in becoming an officer, what do I need to know? What is your best advice to me regarding this process? And... soften your interviewer up by turning the tables on them: ask her about herself and her sorority experience! People love to talk about themselves and they will be flattered that you are listening.)

Write out a list of things you want them to know about you. Make an effort to touch on these points. Practice how you might talk about yourself and your interest in being a member.

Practice in front of a mirror how you might answer questions like:
* Tell me about yourself: major, hometown, family, interests, campus activities, grades, personal attributes....
* Why do you want to join a sorority? Why do you want to join THIS sorority?
* How are you financing your college education? (Scholarships, student loans, parents paying, financial aid with part time jobs?) HINT: This is a softball. Answer the question and follow-up with, "But I've decided that joining a sorority is part of my personal goals, and I'm prepared to handle the dues and other expenses through (my family paying, my work-study job at the library, as part of my scholarship money, etc.)"
* Tell me about your career goals
* What are your hobbies and interests?
* What is your special talent? (Great time to relate an anecdote about your athletic prowess, musical/dancing talent, arts and crafts, being a good event organizer, someone people look up to, a person who takes direction well and is able to explain it to others, being a good student and a good daughter/niece/sister/friend, your ability to juggle volunteerwork/parttime paid job/full time school and still be ready for more.)
* What does the word "Sisterhood" mean to you?
* A sorority is an important time committment, and so are your classes. How do you manage your time now and what are some ways you will manage your time if you join a sorority?
* What leadership positions have you held?
* Tell me about your most important accomplishment to date.
* Tell me about a mistake you made. What happened and what did you learn from it?
* Tell me about past experiences where you have been part of a team
* What has really stood out to you about this GLO throughout this recruitment process?

ABOVE ALL.... do tell that you are very interested in membership in the GLO, based on your experience meeting the potential members and the national officers, and that you would be honored to be considered. This is the number one mistake people make during interviews of any kind-- not verbally expressing their sincere interest in the organization, position, etc. DO NOT LEAVE THE INTERVIEW WITHOUT TELLING THEM YOU WANT TO BE A MEMBER! It's one thing to sell yourself, all your great accomplishments, aspirations and your pretty face... it is another to communicate that "I'm here because I really like this organization and I want to become a member of the organization."

Last but not least-- shake hands firmly, smile and LISTEN to the content of the interviewer-- you're trying to hold a conversation where you answer her questions and follow up with questions of your own and personal anecdotes.

Good luck! It helps to practice answering questions in front of the mirror and having a good friend ask you questions, too.

ETA: Eat something before you go into your interview! Even if it is just a piece of toast. Go to the bathroom before your interview! Pop a listerine breath strip before you head into to the interview. If you are still feeling jittery as you walk in, and they ask how you are, it's ok to say, "I'll be honest. I'm a little nervous! I'm really excited about XYZ and I'm so happy I've made it this far in the interview process! How are you doing today?"

isnt she? ;) she never ceases to amaze me

adpiucf 10-04-2004 04:18 PM

Thanks! :)

Another thing: While it would be great to get a bid and be a founding sister, it isn't the end of the world and isn't a reflection on you as a human being if you aren't extended an invitation to become a member. Remember that.

With that being said, go into the interview, be confident, be lovely, but also have a back-up plan. What if I don't become a member? What am I going to do?

* I will call my best friend and cry a little. I'll write in my journal. I'll also make a list of things that I am proud of-- things that make me special and wonderful. I'll go shopping and buy myself something pretty. And tomorrow.... tomorrow, I'll march right into the office of Student Activities and sign up for the [fill in the blank] club so that I can make some new friends and get involved on my campus. AND I'll sign up for January Recruitment.

*In the meantime, I'm going to get ready for my interview, and I'm going to be confident because I'm a good person, I'm accomplished, I'm surrounded by people who love and support me, and this is MY time to shine!

Good luck girls!!! :)

AOPIHottie 10-04-2004 09:16 PM

Those are GREAT tips!!! Good luck to both of you ladies!!

mmcat 10-05-2004 08:20 AM

ditto...ditto.
that's a graduate level short course in how to interview. superb job.
good luck ladies. give it your best.

MaggieXi 10-05-2004 08:50 AM

Here's a little bit from a Marketing person (and an Elon Alum!)

1.Make eye contact with your interviewer when she is asking you a question. If there is a panel of people be sure to include them with your body language.
2. Don't cross your arms in front of your chest, sit on your hands, fidget with your fingers. It makes the focus turn away from what you are saying.
3. You might want to bring a bottle of water with you to sip on. It will keep you from getting all dry and it also will give you a second before you answer a question. However, be sure not to drink out of it while they are asking you a question.
4. Have fun. Don't think of it as a competition, or a life or death experience. You are just going to go have a conversation with someone about something you are interested in. It's ok to laugh at any of their jokes or smile when they smile. All people involved will relax if you show them you are somewhat relaxed.
5. Above all else SMILE!!!! And dress to impress, but don't go over board!!!

Xylochick216 10-05-2004 02:10 PM

You've gotten some great advice :)

One more thing: Make sure your cell phone is OFF. It's really rude (and distracting) to have it ring, beep, etc. during the interview.

Good luck! I've got my fingers crossed for both of you!

Jessy4069 10-06-2004 01:05 AM

Thanks yall for all the wonderful tips!

I had my interview tonight and one of the women commented on my firm hand shake! My interviewers were impressed that I had done my research!

But I was suprised that they only asked me one question... Why do I want to be in TriDelta at Elon? I had a bunch of questions for them and we also chitchatted for the rest of the time...

All in all it was a good interview... I just hope i dont get a phone call thursday night!

Thanks girls for all your help!

navane 10-06-2004 02:11 AM

Good for you! I'm glad it went so well! :)

adpiucf, you rock the free world! As well as everyone else on this board, thank you for all of the advice!

My interview is tomorrow, and I'm already typing up questions and possible answers. Keep your fingers cross for Jessy and me, and hopefully we won't get that phone call tomorrow night.
