Coke most of the time... Sometimes I call it soda.

I never call it pop though.

UHPhiMu05 07-30-2004 10:38 AM

Coke most of time... if not that I usually say soda.

Kevin 07-30-2004 10:55 AM

One thing I forgot to mention. Dr. Pepper is NEVER a coke. It's always Dr. Pepper.

However, Pepsi could be coke or 7-up or Sprite. Dr. Pepper is sacred though.

ADPiShannan 07-30-2004 11:30 AM

Soda. I grew up in the southeast then moved up to Ohio when I was in the 5th grade. My family is very southern so I kept all their terms lol, I did lose the accent and now have a PA accent since in Ohio I lived near PA.

Everyone I know in Ohio calls it pop and looks funny when I say I want a soda. I also call it coke though cause everything where I lived when I was young was called coke lol.

Shortfuse 07-30-2004 02:17 PM

I heard it called POP when I was at Illionis State a few years back. IT'S SODA PEOPLE! OLD DUDES on a porch with straw hats call it POP. :D

AlphaGamDiva 07-31-2004 08:56 PM

how many times has this conversation been brought up? lol :D

that map is neat-o, BTW.....i was in Southern Alabama for too long to call it anything other than coke! i remember going into a mcdonald's when i was in middle school and saying i wanted a coke and the girl at the counter asked me, "what kind?" :D (when it comes down to it, i am a pepsi girl, though!) however, being in KY for so many years, and esp now being in this small EASTERN KY town, "pop" does occasionally pop up in my vocabulary. but we have this drink called "Ale-8" here...it's like a barely fizzy ginger ale and is NASTAY....but ppl around here drink it like they'll never make another bottle......gotta be raised on it, i guess......the full name is "Ale 8 One"....a late one.....b/c it has so much freakin caffeine in it!

/rant about a drink no one cares about....including myself

cash78mere 07-31-2004 09:20 PM

soda. why would i call something a coke if it's a pepsi or a sprite?

dakareng 07-31-2004 11:50 PM

A carbonated beverage, whether it is in a can/ bottle or glass is POP (and far more of tha map seems to agree with that). A soda is a fountain beverage that is soda water with ice cream +/- flavoring.

Coke is a brand (yes there are other products where the brand has taken over as a generic term but that doesn't make it right) I'm a true Coke gal (actually diet Coke) so it drives me crazy when I ask for a Diet Coke and they bring me Diet Pepsi, or even worse Diet Rite.

kk_bama 07-31-2004 11:57 PM

What about cola?

Anyone call it cola, since that's what it actually is?

RACooper 08-01-2004 12:15 AM

But a cola is a type of "pop".. for example is an Orange Crush or Cream Soda a cola? That's just as silly as calling a Ginger Ale a "coke"... "pop" and "soda" are the only two that make sense really.

tinydancer 08-01-2004 12:25 AM

I usually say Coke because that's what I like. Sometimes it's cold drink. We only laugh at people who say sody water!:p

kk_bama 08-01-2004 12:32 AM

"cola - carbonated drink flavored with extract from Kola nuts." from thefreedictionary.com

I don't think anything other than Coke and Pepsi use the Kola nut, but I could be wrong. Maybe Dr. Pepper and Mr. Pibb as well?

GRhinoUK 08-01-2004 12:37 AM

I'm in a "coke" area but I've always called it "soda" in general or the specific brand I want. "Pop" always seemed weird to me but nothing drives me crazier than when someone says they want an orange coke or a cherry coke but actually mean cherry Pepsi.

Jill1228 08-01-2004 08:46 AM

I call it soda and folx here look at me like I lost my ever loving mind!
(I get the "I can tell you are not from here". No sh*t! My slight Southern accent is a dead giveaway!) :p

kappaloo 08-01-2004 10:32 AM

I use "pop" to refer to carbonated beverages.
I use "coke" when I'm specifically talking about the Coke/Pepsi/RC type of pop.

The B Girl 08-01-2004 10:39 AM

In Florida, it is a melting pot of people so you hear EVERYTHING (Soda, Pop, Coke). But since my family is more southern, I was raised using "Coke". Since I have become older, it has turned into "Diet Coke". :)

Pepsi may be from New Bern, NC but I'm a true Coke girl.

I think that map is really cool too but the numbers are not so good. I mean 120,000 respondents in approx 3,000 counties across the country...that's not very good statistics. But it is still cool to see how it is different across the country.

Yep... I would definitely put Coke in the same category as Bandaid and Kleenex, at least in NC. Just yesterday, I asked someone to get me a Coke, and they responded, "What kind?"

Also, I think I've mentioned this in some other thread about pop/soda/Coke, but I've also heard it frequently called DRINK in NC. Like, "Can you get me some drink?" If someone said "a drink", it could mean any beverage. But "some drink" implies a Coke-type beverage.

labeachgrl 08-01-2004 11:12 AM

I grew up calling it pop in Colorado, but my mom grew up using it in Iowa. I switched to using soda in Hawaii, because people didn't know what pop meant. I've been using soda ever since.

aephi alum 08-01-2004 11:35 PM

Soda. Coke is Coca-Cola, a specific type of soda (unless you are referring to cocaine). Pop is your father.

I was just recently in Vancouver, and stopped into a drug store. The aisle with all the soft drinks was labeled "pop". Silly people... :p

Lindz928 08-02-2004 01:22 AM

I'm down here in good ole TEXAS where we all say Coke. I can't remember the last time I heard anyone in TX say soda or pop. I honestly think you would get a funny look in most parts of Texas if you asked for that.

My mom's whole family lives in Cleveland, and they all say Pop. I laugh at them every time they say it. But, I guess it's ok, cause they look at me like I'm nuts when I say "Ya'll". hehe :p

RioLambdaAlum 08-02-2004 02:22 AM

Awsome map I had to glance for my county in Ohio...its right we call it Pop...and the one who started this...you must be kinda from the area my cousin is. She is DZ and lives over in NC they call it Coke or sometimes Soda. I have also heard it called Soda Pop. Go fig.

Actually, I'm from Atlanta and go to Alabama for school. We call it Coke both in my home county (Cobb in GA) and here in Tuscaloosa county at school.

I think most call it Coke in the South because of its Atlanta origins. I pretty much refuse to drink most Pepsi products-- I'm a Coke girl all the way!

My boyfriend just moved into a condo in Smyrna. Yay for Cobb County! :) I spent the whole weekend there and I LOVE it!

I call it soda. I grew up in SoFl so that explains it. Although, after living in Orange County, FL for 5 years now where most of the people call it Coke (50-80%), it's starting to rub off on me and I've been known to say it more often.

Call it soda in ATL they might call you a tourist or worse a yankee. :p ;)

The yankee comment was a joke for those that didn't get that.

Lol if you ever come to Cobb county even you might think that. :p

kk_bama 08-02-2004 04:50 PM

My only complaint about Cobb is the congestion. When my family moved into our house 14 years ago, it was much less congested.

Now, whenever I'm home, I can't even run errands without feeling like I will die in traffic. The Avenue east Cobb was built about a mile from my house, and it's always so busy around that area now! But I can't complain. I love having a Gap, AE, Borders, Abercrombie, etc. all nearby.

Cobb County is a great place to live and raise a family, however. I graduated from the No. 1 public high school in Georgia!

_Opi_ 08-03-2004 08:53 AM

I call it pop.

08-03-2004 12:42 PM

i call it coke (even though i may be referring to a dr. pepper).

I was a waitress and if someone ever asked for a Coke I would bring them that or if they said what type of Coke we carried I would tell them regular, diet and cherry never would I think to include other types of pop.
well when ordering a drink at, i would say what i wanted. 'i want a dr. pepper.' when speaking to a co-worker, it is usually 'hey, you want to walk over to the coke machine and get a coke.' :D

bluefish81 08-03-2004 06:40 PM

It's always been pop to me.
