What if some lanky man wears this "T shirt"???

I mean--can everyone have an abortion, too???

"I'm aborted, she's aborted, he's aborted, we're aborted--wouldn't you like to be aborted too..."

I can think of better things to sell rather than T-shirts that say things...

Like better women's health care...

"Very disappointed," she told KCBI. "I think the issue to focus on here is the effort that Planned Parenthood goes to to prevent unwanted pregnancy. I think this is just a poor decision and we are just not supportive of it."

I agree...if we're going to put our business in everyone's face, why not shirts that say "I use condoms" or "Depo-Provera is the shiznit!"

I think the point of the campaign ultimately was to make money. From what I can tell, it's doing that.

I don't think the "average" American woman who's had an abortion would wear this. It seems to be targeted to the outspoken feminists--like those quoted in the article. I can tell you that very few of the women I've escorted into PP wouldn't be rocking this shirt.

On another board I frequent, the take on this is much different. Most are familiar with PP's agenda and support it wholeheartedly.

But this shirt, and the confusion around it, is yet another reason I feel that feminism--and I say this as one!--alienates poor women, uneducated women, and women who may not have the time or self-awareness to accept their decisions as anything other than necessity.

I'm waiting for the "I Had a Colonoscopy" shirt to come out. :D

The wait may not be that long. A lot of colon cancer awareness groups have been mulling over that kind of approach to encourage routine checkups. One recent campaign was "Don't Die of Embarassment." The point being, it's in your best interest to get over the discomfort of an anal-rectal exam than find out the hard way that cancer got out of control.

Rosie O'Donnell did something similar with her "I Got Squished" T-shirts that she promoted on her show, encouraging routine mammography.

Then of course, there's the guy who was all over MTV (I think it was Tom Green, but someone correct me if not) who coined the pithy phrase, "Don't be a yutz--check your nuts!" for testicular cancer awareness.

I'm going to end the hijak before a discussion begins on abortion vs cancer awareness.

I was looking for a website and typed in the name without .com because my browser does that automatically. The actual site was a .net. The .com site forwarded me to an anti-abortion site where I was suddenly looking at picture of an aborted fetus. It was not exactly what I needed to see. It was really awful. Anyway, I am very upset that I saw this and needed to vent. I figured this was a more appropriate thread that the Random Thread.

Back to the t-shirt talk.

Absolutely. As far as the tee is concerned, for people who consider abortion simply an operation, it's like an "I had my gallbladder removed" shirt which is a sick concept by itself!

For those who consider a fetus to be alive, it's a HORRIBLE concept!

But for those who are sick and tired of the way society condemns people who choose a route that is better for them (and for their child/ren if that baby will be brought up in a negative home, put through the "system," etc.), I get it.

For the record, pro-choice is NOT pro-abortion. I am strictly pro-life morally and personally, but I wouldn't stop another person from saving her child from being born into the world as it is today.

Im all for a women right to have an abortion, but I wouldn't hang out with one who did.

That's what I was going to say. This shirt makes girls that are sloots that much easier to pick out in a crowd.

Maybe the purchasers see it as a sign of empowerment. Not that it something to be PROUD of but not something they are ashamed of, either.

The whole reason these "I had an abortion" shirts even happened was that, in France about 10 years ago, a lawmaker said that women who have had abortions really won't ever become much and they'll still end up having kids they can't afford and become a drain on society. I think he said something to the effect of, "show me a successful woman who has terminated her pregnancy."

So, in response to that, a fairly large group of powerful women in French government, businesss, etc. decided to come forward in a major newspaper and admit that they had had abortions. In the US, the Ms Foundation decided to do the same, but...with T-shirts.

Kind of creepy, huh?
