Well mine was through COB... the adpi chapter on my campus had not gotten a very large new member class, so they decided to have a little recruitment weekend... Well I didn't really know it was a whole weekend thing, but I had stopped by an info both of their's and shown interest so I was invited to a karaoke night on friday night... The next thing I knew i was invited back on saturday... then sunday morning I received a call from an adpi asking where my room was... This hit me that I was probably receiving a bid... The funny part was there was another katie down the hall from me... they tried her door first... luckily she wasn't home and they noticed my room at the end of the hall... They came down and extended me the bid and i accepted right then and there... The next thing I know I was calling my parents and explaining to them i joined a sorority...

I wasn't surprised at all because I got cut by all the other sororities just after cokes. Everyone knew I was a ZTA legacy and that my mom went to the same school and that all I wanted was to be a Zeta. I was just THRILLED that I got a bid. And that my two closest friends did as well. It was a very special night and the three of us went out to celebrate. Two of us only had ZTA to choose from and we knew musketeer #3 got a bid from ZTA too, just because there was no way they would split us all up. It was such a great feeling to get that phone call from my Rho Chi that night and then open up my bid the next morning and literally run to the Zeta house to say hi to all my new sisters! Ok, thinking about all of this has just brought back SO many memories! :)

Our recruitment process works a little bit differently, as my school only allows locals right now, but after I preferenced, we had a formal tea with our future sisters where they asked us all kinds of questions as to what we could bring to the group, and at that time, we had to tell them where we would be during two different time periods. The first one was so that if you weren't going to get a bid, you wouldn't have to wait around in your room all night to see if you got a bid.
During that time, one of my fellow kdchi hopefuls found out that she didn't get in, but once the time period passed, I knew, so I was basically jumping for joy. During the second time, one of my friends who lived 3 floors above me was talking to me on AIM, and she was like the KDChi's are coming! So I looked at my door, and all sorts of shadows from people standing outside were showing up, and when I got the knock, I just about fell over from excitement :) |
Oh man, mine was dramatic. I didn't get invited back to final parties, so I did my prefrence signing on Friday, and everyone else's preference was done on Sunday. If you get a phone call on sunday, you didn't match and you are now independent. I got a call, no big deal. So monday rolls around, and I had a meeting with the dean of student affairs to discuss rowing. I get back to my room and my roommate tells me that someone from student affairs called and INSISTED on leaving me a voicemail. I thught it was just the office calling to cancel my meeting. NO! It was the greek life advisor telling me that I recieved a bid from my no. 1 choice if I still wanted to accept it! I FREAKED OUT! I mean FREAKED OUT. Jumping up and down, super excited. I knew what bid I got even before the rest of the rushees because of my "special conditions" of my bid. But it turns out that my next door neighbor and good friend (who was in my Rho Chi group) got the same house. So after we got our bids we were bouncing up and down SCREAMING "No eating here tonight, no eating here tonight you're on a diet!" from Finding Nemo. I still have NO IDEA why we chose to sing that. But there were tears/laughter/hugs all around.
(Incidentally, the day I got my bid was my 2 year anniversary with my boyfriend. Two happy things on one day). |
The way my school's bid day works is like this.. all the girls meet in front of the mountainlair (which is like our student union) at noon, and a big line forms. Some girls from Panhellenic are sitting at tables and when you get up there, they hand you a little white envelope with your bid day card in it. I was SOOO NERVOUS and I opened mine and luckily it was alpha phi, my first choice!! After you get your card, you go around the back of the building and all the sororities are waiting for the new members, doing their chants and yelling and all that with posters and balloons and stuff. You run down these steps and run over to your new group. It was soo much fun!

Just a thought....during the run to our houses/chapters....if anyone ever tripped/fell?
|
Not that I know of.. but I'm sure on like rainy days or something, its probably happened. That would suck, showing up to your new house and wet and muddy.
|
Would make for a great story to tell your little! muwahaha.

I received a phone call from the director of expansion saying that they had gone over my application to join the colony and they had approved me (or something to that effect).
My rush consisted of me filling out a form and interviewing with the director of expansion and (I think) a former Pres. from our Baylor chapter. |
I think its different now, but the way we used to do it was like alot of others. Those who recieved a bid were told to go to the student union on Sunday morning. Bids were handed out and cards signed, then you went to the gym. All the Sororities met in the Gym, and everyone that recieved a bid sat in the middle of the floor. And each new member's name was called and ran to their org. kinda sucky for those who didn't make quota, so I think its different now. But the best was after and the NMs were called, the PXs were revealed and ran back to their ORGS. It was crazy! Likle 40 girls would run to "reclaim" their PX. One girl actually broke her arm one year, and I thonk someone got a broken nose once too. Insane.

i took an open bid from phi mu the spring semester of my jr. year. when i came to college, i was completely against the idea of EVER joining a sorority. i had several friends that were greek, but no very close friends. but then some close friends of mine joined. at that point i still had no desire to join, but slowly my opinion started to change when i started hanging out with several of their sisters. i really felt comfy with phi mu. so i let my friend take me to a COB. later that night she came by with my card and a pink carnation. i was so happy that they decided to let me join...especially since i was already so far into college.
|
I actually co-founded my own sorority, so the only comparable thing would probably be when I found out we were official...
|
I went to several COB parties for AOII...LOVED them, can't imagine going anywhere else, and my best friend also went. We were both music majors at the time, and her private lesson was right after mine. She showed up for her lesson that day with a huge grin on her face, absolutely glowing and told me that she got a bid from AOII and already accepted it. I panicked! I was so scared that she got a bid and I didn't for some reason, I was sick about it walking back to my dorm. When I got there, there were about 15 AOII's waiting outside my dorm room, singing, balloons, and a bid! I cried and accepted my bid on the spot.

My COB
It was the end of my freshman year, and I was thinking about joining a sorority. I had tried formal rush in the fall, but couldn't do it. I had been talking to my friend down the hall, who I went to high school with. She told me to talk to another girl we know that was a sorority. So I talked to this girl and she invited us to some stuff to meet some of the girls and everything. My friend down the hall, Amanda, and I went. That night she got a bid, which I didn't relize this was going to happen, and I got an invite back to the house to get to them more. We went again the next night, and it was fun. I spend the whole day wondering if I would get a bid, that night Amanda's roommate had come with us to the house. Once we got back to the dorm, I had gone down to their room, and then into the bathroom across the hall. When i came out there was a group of Pi Phi's singing to my friends room, one said "Carla's right there, " and then to me to run back to my room and that I didn't see them. So I ran back to my room and got so excited, it seemed like forever before they knocked on my door. When I opened it I had a huge smile on my face as they sang me the same song from the night before, and then gave me my bid. I signed it on the spot. It was one of the best nights of the life, so far. I have many Pi Phi nights to go, and I can't wait. I'm pledging right now, and get initated in about two weeks!!! :D

I just went through rush last spring and it was one of the best times. My one good friend rushed with me and we ended up in the same PX group and we were both interested in the same sorority. The day of prefs i made my choice that i only wanted to be A-Phi but since we can't suicide here i had to put a #2 choice. The next day i got a call from my friend who had gotten her bid card from alpha phi and was soo excited and said i need to get down to the office right away to get mine becuase it was the same writting as hers. Bid Night was an absolute blast and i couldn't have asked for anything more! afterwards we were all walking back to the wings and i tried to say hi and congrats to the girls from my #2 but they compleatly ignored me. Just this year i found out that i was one of their top 3 and they were really mad that i didnt choose them. finally some of the girls are talking to me and im becoming friends with them but i love my sisters and i couldn't be any happier where i am.

my sorority doesn't go through rush, so i found out a little bit different. on the day i found out that i had been accepted, i got a phone call from one of the sisters who i was actually a really good friend with. she asked me if i could meet her at a specific place/time to discuss some things about the upcoming intake events for the sorority. from that conversation, i obviously had no idea what was going to happen. well, i got there, and she came out to meet me and asked me to wait for her for a few minutes, that she was finishing up some homework. she introduced me to another interested girl and said she hoped i didn't mind that she'd invited her, and that there would be one more girl coming with us. the other girl showed up and we were all just talking, and my friend came back and was like, you know what, this is taking longer than i thought it would, why don't you guys come sit with me? so we went back with her and were surprised by the entire chapter sitting in the room. we were each given a pink rose (the sorority flower) and asked by the members if we would accept their invitation to become members. we were given 24 hours to respond, but none of us took more than 5 minutes. the girls had brought food and drinks and we all celebrated. that was a really cool night.

Bumping so we can get new stories from this year! I love bid day stories!
I did COR at Kappa and JUST Kappa... I had decided that would be the only place I'd be really happy. (I wouldn't encourage that mindset, but hey, I was young and stupid!) I went to about 5 events at the house, had a TON of fun, met so many great girls, and was really hopeful, but because there were so many great PNMs and only a handful of spots, I didn't really think I had a shot. It was super competitive that year. I remember them telling us they'd let us know by Wednesday... I was a TRAINWRECK all day, shaking and on the verge of tears. I came home after work and just cried my eyes out because the day had come and gone and I figured the worst. I remember it was absolutely pouring rain that day and I thought it was appropriate. I got an email the next day asking me to watch my phone and all I could think was, "well, crap... I don't want to hear the 'thanks but sorry' talk..." When I actually DID get the call, it was the rush chairman offering me a bid and I was totally shocked! I was on a freakin' bus at the time and could hardly hear her over the noise, but I definitely teared up. A lot. I pledged that night and the rest is history! :) |
thanks for bumping!! reading this thread made me smile!

I had been a Sigma for all of 3 weeks when I posted this. Love it. |
Oooh I like this thread!
Here's how I got my bid: I rushed Fall semester of my Freshman year. By the second week of Rush, I was totally pulling for SigEp. One of my roommates got a bid the first week and the other three of us were still rushing (one ended up pledging a different org in the Spring while the other got a bid to two other orgs but eventually dropped and left school). Anyway, Thursday night arrived and the event that night was bowling. I was very nervous because this was the last night that SigEp was giving out bids during Rush. Eventually, my roommate (the one that pledged another org in the Spring) and I felt very down because the night was winding down and both of us were still bid-less. One of the members approaches me, though, and asks me to help him get something out of his car. I said "okay" and followed him outside. When we got outside, not only did we walk the opposite direction of his car, we went to an unlit spot behind a wall where there were no cars. Around the wall was the chapter president and three guys behind him (these three guys were all 'big names' on campus and within the chapter). They all looked up at me and the president begins talking about how they're glad i"ve come out to so many events and I seem like a really solid guy and a bunch of other good stuff. At the end of his speech, he pulls a bid card from behind him, hands it to me, and says, "we would love for you to be a part of our Fraternity." Obviously, I accepted. So here we are now. :D I remember being extremely nervous (wouldn't you be in that situation!?) and extremely excited once I saw the bid in my hand. The main thing I remember from the bid is the part that says Ritual is on "Sunday, September 13, 2008." That does not exist. :P |
I feel like I already told my story somewhere, but I don't remember where (last time I was on here was November 26, 2008! .. I know this because my profile told me so :D ) so I will tell it (possibly again?)
I was invited to some COB events by a friend, and I told her I was not interested in joining any sororities. So she told me to just go and at least hang out with her, so I went! After a couple times, she told me the other girls were getting frustrated because they wanted to give me a bid but she had told them I didn't want to join! That, of course, made me feel extremely special, and I really liked all the girls, so I decided to accept the then non-existent bid and told her so.. That night, a bunch of girls came to my dorm room with the bid. I'm pretty sure they were more excited than I was. But now that I am an alumna and I look back on it, I am sooo glad I joined. My college life would not have been the same without my sorority. I don't regret any bit of it! |
I had rushed via COB. I really didn't expect to get a bid. The night that bids were being distributed, we had to wait by the phone between certain hours (I think it was between 7 and 11pm or something). If the phone rang, it meant that we didn't get a bid (this was 1990, so no cell phones); and if we were receiving a bid, they'd come to our door.
My dorm had five rooms per suite. There was a locked, exterior door to the suite, so to get into the suite to even knock on the bedroom doors, you had to knock and wait for someone in their room to hear it. Every time I heard a knock on the suite door or the phone rang, my stomach dropped. I remember yelling "not now!!" at anyone who dared call during that time, and told my roommate she better use someone else's phone if she needed to call anyone (although girls in 3 out of the 5 rooms on my suite were rushing - W, C and I). When the knock on my door finally happened, I opened it, and there was the sister who I had gone to HS with (which shocked me, because I thought that a fight over a boy in HS was going to keep me from getting bid), bid in hand. I hugged her and started crying, while a few seconds later, someone else was at my neighbor W's door, and W started screaming. I honestly could not believe it. It was then that we heard the phone ring in C's room. THAT was really hard, because we were so very excited. We hugged her before going off to our bid night celebration, and as we were leaving, the president had come to see C to make sure she was okay (which I thought was very sweet, considering that three of us had rushed together and she didn't make it). I don't remember how many girls did not make it, considering there were only 5 slots open. What was really cute is that when we were gone, someone had decorated our doors. |
When I Rushed I was sure I was gonna get a Bid from one of my top 3 which I did just not on bid day haha...Pike was the number one choice then KA ,Then Sigma NU... I got a bid from Sigma Nu on Bid day I accepted it ,but realize latter that night that I couldnt see myself in it for the long haul and ...Next Night I went to a KA Party and the Guys Gave me a bid right there stopped the whole party I was really shocked and excited! Long story short I'm a Member of the Best Fraternities in the country and I think it was one of the best decisions Ive made!
