At the University of Oregon, Sigma Nu was the first fraternity. They were founded in 1900.
I don't know about the other fraternities, but I can do most of the sororities. . . Gamma Phi - 1908 *Kappa Alpha Theta - 1909 (technically, they were founded as a local in 1904 and are considered "first sorority" by some.) Chi Omega - 1909 *Tri Delta - 1910 Delta Gamma - 1913 Alpha Phi - 1915 Pi Phi - 1915 *ADPi - 1920 *Delta Zeta - 1920 Alpha Chi Omega - 1921 *Alpha Xi Delta - 1922 *AOII - 1923 *AGD - 1924 *Phi Mu - 1927 *Sigma Kappa - 1928 *Zeta Tau Alpha - 1929 I don't know the founding dates of Kappa Kappa Gamma or Kappa Delta, but they're somewhere in the middle and they're both still open. * means dormant chapter |
The first fraternity at Alabama was Delta Kappa Epsilon, founded in 1847 as their Psi chapter.
The first sorority at Alabama was Kappa Delta, founded in 1904 as their Zeta chapter. Sigma Alpha Epsilon was founded at Alabama in 1856. |
Here at Washington State University the first was Kappa Sigma in 1909 (they are coming up on their 100 years!)
The reason I know is from my boyfriend who is a Kappa Sig, our Greek life page doesn't tell local charter dates, and most of the chapters here don't say them on their web pages. |
At Harvard, the Massachusetts Alpha chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was chartered in 1779 when Harvard was 143 years old, and it has been going strong ever since. It is the oldest continuously operating chapter of any Greek organization. :D
The chapter is now known as Alpha Iota of Massachusetts; when Harvard and Radcliffe merged, alumnae of Radcliffe's Iota chapter were recognized as members of Alpha Iota. I'm proud to be a female member of the oldest fraternity on my campus! ;) |
Lander University in SC
1st Fraternity was Pi Kappa Phi 1st Sorority was Phi Mu |
There used to be a bunch of local fraternities at Florida Tech, but they all either affilliated with a national (like Delta Delta Tau becoming Theta Xi), but I believe the first national fraternity on our campus was Pi Kappa Alpha.
Gamma Phi Beta was the first national sorority on our campus, in the early 80s. Once, again, not sure about locals. |
My chapter is currently the oldest (As far as I know) on Campus, First as a Local Fraternity. Second oldest is Tau Kappa Epsilon.
|
Still around I would say the following two: Alpha Delta Phi which started before my school was there as the Chicago graduate chapter in 1881 and I guess became a chapter at my school in 1896.
And Psi Upsilon's chapter at Chicago was created in 1869 - again before the school. -Rudey |

In all honesty though, I really can't think of a more difficult school to colonize at. However, you would have been one of the top chapters if you had not left campus simply because of your house. If you don't know what it looks like, here it is http://www.alumni.uchicago.edu/image...house-ext2.jpg and it was designed by Howard Van Doren Shaw. It is currently our alumni house. I'm not completely sure the expenses of that house would have ever made it worth it for you guys to hold onto. It's an amazing house as are many of the houses, BUT these houses don't hold 200 guys so perhaps your resources were better allocated outside of this campus. We have heard all sorts of rumors about why you left campus and if you can PM me the reason, it'd be great to know because none of the stories have been normal stories. -Rudey |

The oldest fraternity at Washington and Lee is Phi Kappa Psi. It's Virginia Beta (I think) and I believe is their second overall chapter, founded 1856 (I think). I'm sure Russ will correct me if I'm wrong. ;) I'm pretty sure the next fraternity was KA Order, which was founded here during the Lee Presidency (1865-1870).
The oldest three sororities on my campus were all colonized in the same year, 1989. They are Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Chi Omega. |

At Elon, I believe Kappa Sigma is the oldest active fraternity on campus. TKE, SPE, and AXP were on campus but lost their charters before my freshmen year. I'm pretty sure Tri-Sigma is the oldest sorority on campus, but they were colonized around the same time as ZTA and Phi Mu as well. K Sig and Tri-Sig were founded around 1970 at Elon.

Phi Kappa Chi was founded at Washington & Lee in 1865. At the request of the Phi Psi chapter, they changed their name to Kappa Alpha. |
Some more information about UofG.
Beta Theta Pi would have been the oldest on campus. They are now inactive (1986-2001) Kappa Alpha Theta (also inactive) 1987-1998 Oh, yes and there is now a FarmHouse colony on campus. Founded last year. So a recap: Omega Tau Sigma - 1914 Beta Theta Pi (inactive) - 1986-2001 Kappa Alpha Theta (inactive) - 1987-1998 Delta Upsilon - 1989 Pi Beta Phi - 1996 FarmHouse - 2003 |
At Syracuse University the oldest fraternity is Delta Kappa Epsilon which was founded in 1871. In 1872, DKE's sister sorority, Alpha Phi, was established at SU. We have three Alpha chapter sororities: Alpha Phi, Gamma Phi Beta, and Alpha Gamma Delta. AGD is no longer active due to low numbers but Alpha Phi and GPhiB are still strong.

The History of Sigma Chi Sigma Chi was founded on June 28, 1855, by seven undergraduate men at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. They felt that the principles of "fraternity" were crucial to the overall college experience, but were dissatisfied with the unbalance of loyalties and ideals within the fraternities which existed at their university. Six of the Sigma Chi founders were members of the 12-man Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity at Miami University; when a controversy arose involving a member of the fraternity which could not be resolved, the membership was divided equally. The actions from this controversy led to the founding of Sigma Chi. THE CONTROVERSY. In the mid-19th century, an important aspect of college life was participation in student scholastic and debating societies. One of the most prominent at Miami was the Erodelphian Literary Society. When time came to elect Poet (President) for this prestigious society, a dispute arose in Delta Kappa Epsilon Fraternity (Dekes) over who should hold this position. Several members of this society were also members of the Dekes and one of its members had been nominated for Poet. However, four of the 12-man Deke fraternity would not support the nomination of a fellow member because they knew he had no poetic abilities. These four supported another man who was not a Deke. James Caldwell, Isaac Jordan, Benjamin Runkle, and Franklin Scobey refused to vote for their fraternity brother simply because he was a brother; Thomas Bell and Daniel Cooper agreed with these four and thus split the fraternity in half on the issue. THE BREAK. Neither side would "give in," resulting in pressure from alumni. These "recalcitrant six," as they were called, would not be maneuvered by alumni; thus, the alumni judged the six guilty of violating "brotherly unity," and the decision was made to expel two of the rebels. The alumni were amazed that the six stuck together. When confronted by an alumnus, Runkle, speaking for the other five, stepped forward, removed his Deke pin, threw it on the table, and shouted, ``I didn't join this fraternity to be anyone's tool. And that, sir, is my answer." The six abruptly left and were later expelled from the fraternity. But they were already making plans to create a fraternity of their own, based on noble principles and ideals. THE FOUNDING OF SIGMA CHI. These six men wisely associated themselves with William Lockwood, a highly intelligent student with valuable business sense; he became the individual who set up the plan for the new fraternity. They formulated the first constitution and initiation. Because they believed that the existing fraternities did not emulate the true feeling of "fraternity" and that the other fraternities' ideals apparently meant little, they established a new fraternity, whose ideals and foundations were symbolized by the badge they designed---the distinctive White Cross. Sigma Chi's ideals of friendship, justice and learning would be loftier and would evoke standards by which a man could improve his life while working closely with others from different backgrounds, with divergent ambitions and diverse abilities. The founders themselves, it is felt, personified these ideals. Sigma Chi was officially founded on June 28, 1855. |

At Cal State Long Beach, the sororities were founded in this order:
1. Delta Zeta - 1954 2. Sigma Kappa - 1955 3. Delta Delta Delta - 1955 4. Delta Gamma - 1959 5. Gamma Phi Beta - 1962 6. Alpha Omicron Pi - 1965 This may not be the exact order b/c we have a chapter of Alpha Phi but I don't have a date for them. |

I know this was a random, old thread bump, but I thought it was interesting so I'll play.
I always thought Delta Tau Delta was the first fraternity here. The sign in their front lawn even says "Illinois' First Fraternity". But when I looked at the IFC website to confirm they were like the sixth... So I don't know what's up with that. The oldest are: Sigma Chi 1881 Kappa Sigma 1891 Phi Kappa Sigma 1892 Phi Delta Theta 1893 and THEN Delta Tau Delta 1894 As for sororities, I know Pi Phi and Theta both claim they were the first on campus. According to Office of Student Affairs website, Pi Beta Phi won by 15 days (Pi Phi was founded on Oct. 25, 1895, while Theta was on Nov. 9, 1895). |

At Lawrence Tech, Phi Kappa Upsilon is the oldest fraternity here.
The founder of our university founded them in 1932 (or maybe they were founded in '33, a year after the school opened) so they get grandfathered into random things. For instance, they're the only org with a house. They're a local fraternity. They expanded with 4 chapters but the Alpha, Beta, and Gamma chapters are no longer existent (even though Alpha and Delta were both here at LTU). I think the oldest sorority here is Delta Tau Sigma, another local org. I know a lot of fraternities and sororities have come and gone at this school, though. Lots of locals. |
