American Bandstand was on every afternoon. Soft Drinks out of machines were a nickle. "Mixed" soft drinks (Cherry Cokes, etc.) were a dime. Sesame Street had not been invented. Vietnam was called French Indochina and nobody had heard of it. Saturday Night Live was funny (strange echo in here). Professional basketball players went to college first. Mini-skirts hadn't been invented yet (ugh, the dark ages!) Mini-skirts weren't allowed in school. Women had "hours" in college dorms. Damn, I could go on for a long time. Thankfully for all of you, I won't. |
...when there was no email. If you wanted to write somebody, you got pen and paper and wrote the letter by hand
....when postage stampes were .28 |
When girl scout cookies were only .50 cents a box
|
I remember ...
... when postage was .15. ... using tokens for public transportation in NYC. Tokens cost .50. If you had a buss pass, it cost .05. I also remember two fare zones. No free transfers on the Metrocard like we have now. ... black and white tvs. ... Colecovision with an attachment to play Atari games. ... when tuition at a private college was about $16,000 a year. ... afterschool specials. They were great! ... when President Reagan, John Lennon, and the Pope were shot. :( ... when car phones cost $500 a month. |

When a Gameboy weighed a ton, was gray, and had brocoli colored screens... Teen games like Perfect Match and Mall Madness... and they actually had advertisements on TV... Snorks, Smurfs and Muppet Babies were groovy Saturday morning cartoons... McDonalds wasn't trying to be your latest Health Food Fast Food Joint... Scenes in movies were done by mini-models, actors, and zillions of extras... not CGI. |

-I was excited to get a turn to play Family Feud on the Atari
-Mom or sister had to roll my hair with hot sticks every Sunday for school and THEN tease it because big hair was it -ponytails on the side, super size scrunchiis, banana clips, and lots of hair spray held the hotsticked hair :) -the "cool" people had bangs that had the top layer curled up and then the rest curled down -Full house was awesome and I wanted to be like Candice Cameron -MC Hammer pants were all the rage -Movie disc players (the ones where you had to slide in the entire giant case and then when you pulled it out the disc stayed inside. |
|
Sure I remember when big hair was in because around here is still is for some reason.
Also, no one has told some of the people around here that banana clips ever went out of style. It's a scary, scary place I tell you. |
There were no pantyhose and you had to wear a garter belt.
|
My high school girlfriend used to iron her hair to make it straight.

I remember
When postage was 25 cents
When the concept of airbags seemed completely futuristic When no one had CD players When women wore neckties When it was ok to go trick-or-treating at night When it was ok to celebrate Christmas at school When most of my evenings were taken up watching grainy green footage of Gulf War I. When people were actually nice to each other. Someone said "When gas was less than $1." That really wasn't so long ago. I remember when I was in high school seeing gas in Georgia for around 75 cents a gal. Even here it was around 95 cents or so. And that definitely wasn't so long ago! :) |

And by the way, gas here is STILL less than $2 a gallon (but not by much... when I filled up yesterday, it was $1.79):p Remember when women wore shoulder pads that made them look like football players? |
....when Labyrinth came out and introduced me to rock and roll through the demi-god that is David Bowie.
....when AIDS was this really mysterious illness that everybody on the schoolyard was talking about, but nobody knew what it was until the Ryan White story came on TV. (at my school, at least) ....when King Kong Lives! came out. ....when they FINALLY showed Evil Lynn's hair on He-Man. (It was white!) ....when monkey bars were metal, rusty, and hella dangerous! ....rat tails! (I had one!) ...when the Redskins won the Super Bowl! ...when DC got a female mayor! (AKA Soror Sharon Pratt Kelly.....her slogan was "It's time to clean house" and had accompanying hand gestures.) ...when we became "African American"....well, not WE, but me and and a few others. ...when "Molly's Pilgrim" came on. ....when VEGETABLE SOUP came on!!!! |

Yet, I always went back for more... |
Bringing back some memories...
Watching Miami Vice while still living in Miami and pointing out the poor attempts at disguising locations in the show... and if they were real Metro cops I'd be having Internal Affairs checkin' em out... even if they were undercover! ... when speedometers on American cars only read to 85 and had "55" highlighted to remind you of the national speed limit. (for those who grew up in South Florida in the 70s and 80s)... the infamous Hollywood Drugatorium... ahem... Sportatorium!, home of the infamous Rush (the band, not the talking head) riot! (The band was late in arriving from the Bahamas and the crowd waiting to see the show got more than a little upset, forcing Broward County's finest to start shooting tear gas.) Sadly, the Sportatorium was demolished a few years ago, a victim of urban sprawl. |
