After 39 years of living and working in the Detroit area (the murder capital of the US for many of those years), I have to say, I've never seen someone stabbed, raped, or murdered, either in person or on the news. The worst thing I ever saw was when they showed pictures of people jumping from the WTC on 9/11. After I saw a couple those pics on TV, I made a point to avoid all 9/11 coverage because I couldn't handle that. I never had the TV on during that period while my children were home because I didn't want them seeing it. We discussed the atrocities of the situation and a little girl on my daughter's soccer team lost her Uncle on Flight 93 so there was some direct connection, but I didn't think it wise that they see this on TV.
To witness a beheading in video form is just too much for some kids and a parent should be able to determine what is or is not appropriate for their kids to see.
We had to have permission slips for sex ed classes the whole time I was growing up.
The pictures of the Holocaust we were shown in grade school were still, black and white pictures of the emaciated people who were rescued. A bit different than a live video with sound and color of someone being brutally murdered. I think you can convey the horrific nature of these acts without actually showing them.
