Hubby is in a wedding this summer and I need a new dress. These are the details I have on the wedding.

It is a Casual Elegant wedding at 7:00pm in New Orleans. I know some of it is contradictory so, help....

BTW, I wear a 6 or an 8...

make sure that it isn't white, some may consider this a faux pas. I learned that the hardway at my friend's wedding. She was pissed that my veil was cuter.

So I have an outdoor wedding to go to in a couple of weeks, and I know we talked about white dresse, but, what about a strapless white calf length dress with a black ribbon around the bodice(well, empire-waist style) and black velvety detailing on the front/side of the hem? Crap. They have it in dark pink too, it just wasnt as cute and summery. I also STILL need to find a LIGHT BLUE bridesmaid dress for another pretty informal/outdoor wedding. And do you know how HARD it is to find light blue????

I take it you're the only maid and that's why you're finding your own dress?

Here's my dilemma: The wedding I'm going to is going to be at the country club, no church/temple first, and even though I've asked a gazillion times, I've gotten NO hint as to whether it's formal/informal, or whatever. I will know the bride & her father (and mr. honeychile, who will know only me), but I know I'm being counted upon to make a decent appearance.

My hints that it's somewhat formal are: the choice of menu (filet mignon & lobster OR "chicken frambroise"), the elegance of the invitation, and of course, the club. The hint that it's informal is that the bride has "elegant-informal" on all of her bridal registeries for her style.

I'm thinking classic linen dress with nice jacket? What say the fashion gurus of GreekChat?

What time is the wedding? I would put more emphasis on the food, location, time as to how the wedding will be vs. what is on her bridal registries (I am normally an elegant-informal person, but my wedding was VERY formal).

I love this Ann Taylor dress right now, and they have a cute wrap sweater that matches it...

So I'm going to SEVEN weddings this year, all friends of my boyfriend...and the first wedding we are going to presents the first wardrobing issue. It's at a very conservative Lutheran church, and it's the pastor's son (my boyfriend's cousin). His fiancee has been married before so because of that they are just having hors d'eouvres in the church fellowship hall afterwards rather than a full reception. The wedding is at 5 pm, and the church is in my hometown but I don't know any members. WTF am I supposed to wear?

AGDee 05-31-2005 09:13 PM

In that kind of situation, I would probably wear a soft, feminine, but conservative suit. Like a pink boucle or something along those lines. It's clearly not evening wear, but it shouldn't be casual either.

Or you can wear a cocktail dress.

I am invited to a Ukrainian Orthodox wedding with a reception that follows four hours later. Does that mean the wedding is four hours long? I have heard that Ukrainian Orthodox weddings are long.

I need to buy some type of wrap to cover my shoulders. Any suggestions?

I see no trouble with wearing a white or a black dress, IF there's enough of another color involved - which you seem to describe. It's the ones that look too much like a bride's dress that cause problems. But velvet in the summer? That sounds terribly hot!!

Are you the only bridesmaid, that you get to pick a light blue dress? There are a lot of beautiful dresses in the Spiegel's catalogs in light (azure!) blue that could help you out.

This comes in an awesome shade of light blue, too!

Good luck!!

If the Ukrainian Orthodox wedding is the same as a Greek Orthodox wedding (which I'm positive it is, except its spoken in Ukrainian instead of Greek), the ceremony will be approximately 1 to 1 1/2 hours.

Wear comfortable shoes--many Orthodox churches don't have pews--be prepared, just in case. Also if the church is really conservative, you might have to cover your hair, so make sure that your wrap can do double-duty.

I'm probably scaring you, lol--every Greek Orthodox church I've been to has pews and only the little old ladies cover their heads--but some parishes really stick to the Old World traditions and I would rather have you overprepared than embarrassed!

Thanks Maria. This was exactly the information I needed.

Wow, why couldnt I find those dresses myself! Thats why I love you guys!!! No, I am not the only maid, I am one of 5, but since its a somewhat informal wedding, the bride is letting us choose our own dresses, which can be good but bad. I mean, at least I can pick something flattering for myself, but then again, I have to PICK something! It would be so much easier if she just found a dress and told us to get it!! And the dress w/ the velvet, its just a vlevety print on the dress at the bottom. I am going to check out the Spiegals site, see what I can find. Thanks!

Shoot, I can't figure out how to post pictures! Help, please!?!?

AOPIHottie 07-28-2005 06:14 PM

ok, so obviously I found the light blue bridesmaid dress for the wedding in June. So I am bumping this because....

I watched Wedding Crashers last night, and at one of the weddings the bridesmaids were wearing MY DRESS!! I was so excited, I obviously made a good dress choice!!;) I was excitedly smacking my boyfriend saying "look, its my bridesmaid dress!! I have that dress at home in my closet!!" He was not amused, trying to watch the movie and all.
