I'm sooo Jealous!!!
Nu Theta does not have any lodging to speak of right now.... You see...The town of West Liberty, WV has an old law on the books that states that "Any domicile wherein eight (8) or more unrelated, unmarried females reside constituites a brothel and is illegal and will be dealt with as such". Ridiculous, I know. We are going to have a floor next year (Krice Hall, 4th floor). |
Pardon the interruption

Zeta Alpha - The Ohio State University
http://ohiounion.osu.edu/posts/greek...0O%20House.jpg
Okay, this is a terrible picture of our house. The Zeta Alpha Chi Omega house is at 14th & Indianola right in the Greek Row area (across the street from Phi Kappa Psi, next to Beta Theta Pi, diagonal from Phi Kappa Tau, and close to many other fraternities and sororities). 47 girls live in the house, but there are 98 actives. (Ohio State has a cap on number of girls in the sorority-100) There are 24 rooms - 1 single for the President and 23 doubles. On the first floor there is a nice foyer with a beautiful chandelier, grandfather clock, and the stairs to the second floor. To the left of the foyer, there is the formal and the informal. The informal was recently redecorated and has big leather couches and a flat screen big screen TV. The formal is currently being redecorated this summer. The formal has a big fireplace, lots of couches and easy chairs, a baby-grand piano, and a big window facing Indianola. Behind the informal and formal, there is a small bathroom and the Town-Girls room which had to be used as the Presidents' room this past school year because 57 girls lived in. There is also a mail room on that side of the foyer. On the other side, there is a a coat room which connects to a powder room with a gigantic mirror and chairs which connects to a bathroom with lots of stalls. Next door to the coat room is the House Mom's living area. Across the hall is the dining room with 5 huge tables. The dining room seats a majority of the chapter. The dining room has glass doors leading to the outside where you will find steps to our sundeck and a parking lot that has enough spots for all of the girls who are living in (only sorority on campus that has that!). In the basement we have our chapter room, vending machines, and a laundry room with several washers and dryers. The second floor has a total of 19 rooms, 11 on one wing and 8 on the other. Every room comes with two beds, a closet, a desk, and a dresser. The room decor varies between rooms. (Examples: My room has regular twin xl beds and dark wood furniture, the room across the hall has bunk beds and white furniture, the room next to that has regular twin xl beds and white furniture.) There are two large bathrooms with numerous stalls, sinks, and showers. There is a lounge on the wing with 8 rooms that has a huge couch, table and chairs, desk area, stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, and a big screen TV that we bought with the money we won for winning Greek Week this year. The third floor has 5 bedrooms, each with 2 beds, 2 closests, a desk, and a dresser. The third floor is mainly seniors or upperclassmen who have executive positions. They have a bathroom with 3 stalls and 2 showers. The 3rd floor lounge has a tv, couches, window seat, fridge, microwave, and stove. The entire house has wireless internet, too! Well... thats a pretty indepth look at our house! I thought I'd give it justice since the picture doesn't! |

Epsilon Delta at Southern Miss has two floors of the Panhellenic residence hall, but in the Fall of 07 we get to move into The Village! It will be the home of all sororities on campus and will house 30 members and a graduate student. We will have a foyer, half bath, kitchen, chapter room and patio, plus the double-occupancy girls rooms. To date, our ED alumni have raised over $125,000 to create an endowment for our place in The Village! We are so lucky to have such wonderful alums-other chapters on campus haven't raised nearly as much and we are so thankful! It will be beautiful when we get our hands on it!
Sorry-I don't have any pictures because they are all of construction! |
I love looking at all the pictures of houses! It's sad that being in the city we can't have a house (laws similar to those of no more than 8 women in a house) but it's ok. Do most chapters live in houses or is this only on bigger campuses?
|
I couldn't find an answer of exactly how many chapters have houses. I thought I was bored enough to go through chapter sites and look it up, but I gave up after discovering that 48 do...out of 170 chapters though, I know there are a lot more!
I don't think it really has anything to do with the size of the campus, more of what the university will allow, and what there is space/funding for. My chapter is at a huge school, there are over 30,000 students now, but greek life is relatively new (Chi Omega was the first national sorority on campus, in 1970) and for us its more a matter of university support - they don't think we're really serious. And in their defense, when it comes to a house, we're not. For the last two years, they've extended the offer of a greek floor to all the chapters if they could commit 30 girls, and only one sorority has been able to do that. Its sad, but it is most likely in our future...just not sure how far away! |

Gamma Beta Chapter, UCLA
Article from The Daily Bruin, May 31, 2007:
Maiten Mowreader, the president of the Chi Omega sorority and a third-year political science and Spanish student, said her sorority house was the first at UCLA and carries significant value to the sisters. “Walking through the house, we are constantly reminded of the generations before us that lived here,” Mowreader said. “There are pictures hanging that date back to the 1930s and 1940s (that) show parts of our house that still look similar today.” Chi Omega also keeps in contact with older alumni [sic] and recently held a reunion for women who had graduated 50 years ago. “(The women) were so excited to see the changes that had been made but pleased to see some things about Chi Omega never change,” she said. |

Theta Gamma Chapter - Queens Univ., Charlotte, N.C.
http://campus.queens.edu/library/his...hi%20omega.jpg
Chi Omega (formerly Theta Alpha Pi) was the first sorority installed on campus in February, 1928. The Chi O house would have been near the present Clock Tower. Sorority Houses were were built on the back campus in the 1930s. The six houses were originally in a row located between the present Clock Tower and Everett Library. They were demolished in 1959 to construct the library and new dormitories. The Chi Omega Gazebo was originally built on the exact spot where the original house stood to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the installation of the Queens chapter. The national president of Chi Omega, at that time, was Elizabeth Carmichael Orman, alumnae from 1928, and a charter member of Chi Omega. The gazebo was moved to the front of the campus near Belk Chapel with the Clock Tower was constructed in 1997. |
