I pledged the Alpha Chi chapter at the University of Kentucky in the fall of 1990, initiated in February of 1991, and became an Alumna in May of 1991. The chapter closed at the end of the school year in 1991. From what I was told Zeta tried a couple of times to recolonize at UK, but didn't have much luck with each of the recolonizations. We didn't make quota, which other GLO's did during formal fall rush. In 1991 a decision was reached to de-activate the chapter. I cannot begin to put into words how this broke my heart. I never had a little sister, a candlelight, held an Executive Position, and missed several other experiences that other collegiates had. In 1991 there was an agreement between ZTA and UK that once another sorority on campus (PM me to learn which one) had successfully met quota during 3 consecutive formal fall rushes, then ZTA was to be considered for recolonization. Guess what? This other chapter also left UK, and to the best of my knowledge, there hasn't been any additional discussion about re-activating the Alpha Chi chapter.

I would like to see us recolonize at UK, hopefully it will happen when the time is right, Zeta will have the support of other GLO's, and we will have our house back.

~A Kentucky Zeta

As someone whose chapter at another SEC school was closed under similar circumstances, I know how you feel.

However, I have to believe that IO holds ZTA's best interests at heart. And, as much as I can selfishly wish that we could successfully come back, I know that it is not in the best interest of ZTA as a whole.

SthrnZeta 02-12-2008 12:34 PM

To Mill and Tippie, I cannot imagine how disappointing that must have been :( And though I wish ZTA could recolonize at UK, Mill, Tippie has a good point and good attitude about it. Yeah, it sucks we closed those chapters, but look at all the links we've added to the chain! :) And in the next year or so we'll be starting on Lambda chapters! Though it's sad your chapters closed, there are many brand new ones to be excited about.

When ZTA looks for an area to colonize, I think our main criteria is alum support. Having a strong alum base is a huge necessity if a chapter is going to survive. I think this is the main reason why ZTA has concentrated on colonizing specifically in Florida, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia. We have a lot of alum support in these areas.

I'm going to guess that we don't have a big alum base in New York but I could be wrong.

It would definitely be nice to see a ZTA chapter at NYU. We have a lot of chapters in New Jersey and I'm sure they could help out!

Russell- I didn't know we had a chapter once at NYU. Do you happen to know when it was closed?

YEAH IOTA PSI BABY!!!!!!!! 213 WHAAATT!!!!

Haha anyway, my vote is for University of Buffalo!! I have heard of people wanting to colonize there and how cool!! My chapter would get to be the initiators? I guess it would be called, or the big sister chapter. It would be nice to have some more ZTAs in NY, I mean don't get me wrong we can hold it down haha but it would be nice

Please excuse me for crashing your forum. Has ZTA thought about reviving your old NYU chapter by getting one of the locals to affiliate?

The NYU sorority system had completely disintegrated by the late 70s. Starting in the 80s, sororities, mostly locals started to pop up. One of the locals recently affiliated with AST. There are still 4 locals. The greek life web site is: http://www.nyu.edu/pages/osa/greeklife/org.html

I think he went to FSU. Hasn't posted on GC in ages...

I would love to see you ladies make your way to UW-Stevens Point. We just voted to expand just last night and I must say I'm kinda impressed at least by the Oshkosh chapter which is at a near by school out here in Wisconsin. I just actually emailed they're President and VP to get a little info on their chapter. I hope they email me back soon,

Kansas State Presentations!

Hello Ladies!

Pardon the crash. I have posted on the general board, but if you only check your own forum, I didn't want you to miss this.

Kansas State University is open for expansion, and Zeta Tau Alpha has been chosen as one of the 3 finalists! ZTA was at K-State for a brief period a long time ago (1931-1940), and has other Kansas chapters at Baker and Washburn. (My neighbor's daughter is a Washburn ZTA :))

The presentation schedule is as follows:

Wed, April 22nd from 3:30 to 4:30 (Delta Gamma)
Thurs, April 23rd from 3:30 to 4:30 (Zeta Tau Alpha)
Monday, April 27th from 3:30 to 4:30 (Alpha Phi)

If anyone is close enough to drive in, the presentations are to be held at Forum Hall in the Union.

Good luck!!

From Facebook:

Exciting news! We've been inviting to re-colonize our Alpha Gamma Chapter at the University of Michigan this October. Traveling Leadership Consultants are currently at UM for a week of on-campus PR about ZTA. GO BLUE! GO ZETA! We've also been invited to colonize a new chapter at Texas A&M —Corpus Christi this fall!

wildcatfan 05-06-2009 09:49 AM

If you will allow the crash one more time, let me congratulate you on your selection to recolonize at Kansas State. I would have thought that after 12 colonizations in 5 years, ZTA resources would have been stretched too thin and the preparation would have been incomplete and a little haphazard. I would have been WRONG. Your extension team did a fabulous job. This is not to take away anything from the other houses that presented, but your representatives were incredibly polished and PREPARED. Both your current national president and a past president were on the team. They all did a great job of "working the crowd" before the session, and brought in a lot of local alums and actives from surrounding chapters. They also had an absolutely DARLING video of a 96-year-old Beta Upsilon alum talking about how important her years of being a ZTA at K-State were. Definitely got heartstring points there!

Probably the biggest "solid" aspect to the ZTA presentation, however, was the groundwork that had been done in preparation for housing. As has been posted elsewhere, you really have to be a housed chapter at KSU to be competitive. ZTA had already exhaustively checked out the list of possible immediate housing situations. They also explained your housing corporation and said that funds were already available to begin housing construction without "local fundraising." I wasn't in on the selection process, but I have heard that was a big consideration.

Before the extension process began, ZTA did not have as much name recognition among the actives as the other chapters since Missouri is your only other Big 12 North Chapter. (I know you have a big presence in Big 12 South Texas, but like they say, Texas is a 'whole nother country':)) It is a sincere compliment to note that you were able to overcome that and be chosen to recolonize.

Congratulations and welcome.

FSUZeta 05-06-2009 02:15 PM

wow! thanks wildcatfan. i know many of our sisters on our extension team and they are fabulous women in their own right and have been tireless workers for zta. rest assured that the new colony/chapter will get plenty of attention and assistance both locally and nationally. what exciting news!! thanks for letting us know.

hopeful:) 06-01-2009 10:01 PM

Hello All!

I think that ZTA needs to colonize at UAB- the University of Alabama at Birmingham. It has a growing greek system and (I've heard) may be open to expansion soon.

UAB needs ZTA!!!

FSUZeta 06-06-2009 02:56 PM

hopeful, if uab opens up for expansion, maybe your wish will come true.

the process for a sorority to colonize is pretty straighforward. most often, the panhellenic council of a college sees a need to add another sorority, so after much deliberations they vote to open up the campus and then contact the npc, who in turn sends out a notice to all 26 npc sororities to let them know that "xyz"campus is opening for expansion. interested sororities send information packets and the college panhellenic council or the committee working on the expansion reviews all the packets and then selects a certain number of sororities and extends invitations to those chosen to come to campus and make presentations. after all the presentations have taken place, the college panhellenic council or the committee votes to decide which sorority they will invite to begin a colony.

it's pretty involved and usually doesn't happen real quickly.

ZeeTeeHEYY 06-20-2009 01:51 AM

As a Zeta from CA, I would LOVE to see some more here on the West Coast! I have friends that are in the greek system at many UCs and Cal States but they have never heard of us! It becomes frustrating! I would love for it to be like in Texas where Zeta is a prominent house.
I especially think we should reopen our chapter at USC!

If I may crash, congrats on re-colonizing at Michigan. Do you have any more info on it? I was there when the chapter closed in the 1990s and it was really sad for all involved. I really liked all the girls I knew in the chapter. I wish you all the best. Go Blue!

Thank you for your kind words. Found this on the ZTA website:

"While ZTA is not participating in fall Formal Recruitment, we will hold a special colonization recruitment Oct. 11-15. The recruitment week will include infoviews with National Officers, open house, philanthropy and preference events, and Bid Day on Zeta Tau Alpha's Founders' Day."

This is the direct link to the page about the re-colonization. Very exciting!

My husband went to Michigan State but I can quietly say Go Blue and Go Zeta! :)

Bid Day on Founders' Day - that's exciting!

Hi all,

I normally just browse here on GC but I decided to join because I need to ask this question!! Did we recently colonize at Suffolk University in Boston, MA? My sister attends Suffolk and sent me this link via facebook:

http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gi...5341621&ref=mf

I'd love for her to be apart of ZTA!!!!!! No one in my chapter has heard anything about it so I was just wondering if y'all had any information on it please PM me!!!

thanks y'all!
Lauren

FSUZeta 10-01-2009 06:51 PM

i would tend to think that this is a group of young women who are trying to do this on their own. ordinarily the campus panhellenic has to feel that there is a need for another sorority and take a vote to expand. then the college panhellenic send notice to npc who notifies the national offices of the sororities not presently on campus. those that are interested send info. packets to the college panhellenic, which looks thru them and invites a certain number to come to campus and make presentations. the sororities invited decide whether than they will present and dates are made to hold the presentations. after all the presentations the college panhellenic will vote on who to invite to colonize and that is how its done.

there are cases where an interest group forms with the intent of becoming a chapter of one of the 26 npc sororities, but unless the campus is deemed open for expansion, and the intended sorority is agreeable to the existing group, this circumstance is rare.

PenguinTrax 10-06-2009 09:45 AM

In 2006 Theta Phi Alpha started a chapter there which may still be active. It's hard to tell from the Suffolk site although a Google search makes it look like the chapter was holding activities as of Feb 2009.

In these cases, I think if the campus approves expansion, it can happen and the two chapters on campus are required to form a Panhellenic Association.

AZTheta 10-06-2009 10:14 AM

*crash* it is no secret that the University of Arizona Panhellenic/Greek Office is currently holding talks re: expansion. Don't know/haven't heard yet of any specific GLOs under consideration, just letting you know.

*getting towed back into own lane*

Forgive my crash (was looking for other extension stuff) TPA did charter in 2006 and I did send this on to NPC Extension Chair. They should not be using your name unless approved by ZTA & campus for extension but no vote took place according to organizer. You may want to forward to your extension coordinator as well.

I just wanted to say that the University of Louisville is sooooooo excited to have the ZTA ladies recolonize this fall! Your extension team was extremely impressive and your national consultants (if that is what y'all call them) were beautiful and extremely well spoken. Our Greek community cannot wait to see how everything will pan out and we have the highest hope for ZTA.

FSUZeta 05-27-2011 08:03 AM

thank you cardinalxo. we are very excited to be returning to the university of louisville!

jc40 06-04-2011 10:57 AM

I'd like to see ZTA recolonize/open chapters at the following schools:

Vanderbilt
SMU
USC
NYU
Cornell
Dartmouth

FSUZeta 06-05-2011 10:34 AM

actually, we are colonizing at vanderbilt and nyu in the upcoming year.

if you go to the Greek Life forum, there are two threads on colonizations and expansions that are excellent and are kept very up to date.
