If I'm reading the chart correctly, they aren't scheduled to make an appearance in Texas this year.

I'm really freaked out by all this. I grew up in southern VA, sort of around Richmond, and I don't remember having them. Neither does anyone else I know from that area, so I don't think we really had them there. But in the DC area, all I hear is how bad they are, so I'm SCARED!

I will be wearing a hat every day until they are gone.

mmcat 05-10-2004 08:02 AM

tv had a story sunday that you can cook them and eat them. yuck.
i can't believe they would taste like chicken.

I've heard that they are stupid and fly into everything, including people's hair.

Another annoying thing will be trying to prevent my dog from eating them. Supposedly, dogs love the taste of them, but they get constipated if they eat them.

TigerLilly 05-10-2004 08:40 AM

Uggghhhh I am so glad I'm in Germany this summer. They're set to come to Kentucky this year (if I read that chart right) and I know they would creep me out. Does anyone know how long they stay around? I hope they're gone by the time I get back in August!!!

Are they out yet? Has anyone seen them?

Nikki_DZ 05-10-2004 08:46 AM

According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, a local expert set May 14 as "D-Day" for the cicadas. However, he gave himself a 5 day window either way, meaning they could come out any time now. I read in another article that when the ground temp reaches 64 degrees, it's on. Ugh.

I have to go to Xavier's graduation this weekend, so I hope it at least holds off until next week. I really don't want to try to shield my infant daughter from creepy crawlies.

So glad I don't live in Fairfax anymore. Then again we get every bug known to man here in FL, love bug season should be coming anytime now.

Lil' Hannah 05-10-2004 01:39 PM

Ack! Cicada Mania is reporting that people in a lot of Maryland suburbs have already seen them emerging.

mu_agd 05-10-2004 01:40 PM

ok, y'all are freaking me out with this. although, i don't remember ever seeing any of these things.

lonestaradpi 05-10-2004 08:29 PM

I knew that there was a reason why I liked Texas. I mean we have the little cicadas, june bugs, lizards, huge roaches, mosquitos with west nile, scorpions, snakes, etc, but I'm thinking that the huge cicada infestation is the worst!! Thank God I'm in Texas!!! I read an article in Parade magazine yesterday and those little buggers are nasty ugly! Best of luck to all of you who have to deal with them. Keep us updated. Does anyone need refuge here in San Antonio?

Xylochick216 05-10-2004 08:59 PM

My roommate and I heard them last night.... :(

AXJules 05-13-2004 11:06 AM

Cicada report on the Today show..

Some freaky ass bug dude just described summer trees as a "singles bar" for Cicadas.

They are also showing ways to eat them.

As I told Lil' Hannah, I'm investing in a storm shelter, some of those freeze dried astronaut meals, and enough liquor to get me through till August.

Really though.

come to boston... it looks like we won't be getting them.

From Tony Kornheiser's article (and for those of you who don't watch PTI, he's one of the hosts, and Stat Boy is on there too):

Quote:

Needless to say, I'm not looking forward to the cicadas. I may not be quite as panicked as Stat Boy, who's thinking of renting a beekeeper's suit. But the prospect of a full-scale cicada invasion has me very anxious. I have become fixated on the fact that cicadas have red eyes, because I think this means they have developed night vision. I think this time they are going to be bigger and stronger than ever.

greeklawgirl 05-13-2004 12:03 PM

They say that these cicadas will be in Illinois this summer. I may have to rethink this whole Chicago in July trip. I didn't sign up for Convention in order to be attacked a plague of insects!

CSUSigEp 05-14-2004 03:10 AM

Another reason i love California! no bugs!

I cant wait for news footage of this...

SSS1365 05-14-2004 08:47 AM

Haven't seen a single cicada yet, not even on my 25-mile trip to work from Leesburg, VA to Rockville, MD. But I have heard that they are already seen scattered throughout the DC area.

swissmiss04 05-14-2004 10:11 AM

Ewww :( Once we had a tiny frog infestation. Those suckers were everywhere. I'm so glad I'm not in the cicadia swarm.

BirthaBlue4 05-14-2004 12:51 PM

Yeah, some people have a few of them out here in MD/DC/VA, I haven't seen one, personally, yet. Does anyone know the real date for this area, I've heard three different ones. I got my fly swatter ready. Yes I will be carrying it around, not to kill em, per se, but to get the outta the way. I got summer classes and I WILL be taking the lazy route and driving to each building.

PlymouthDZ 05-14-2004 02:16 PM

my boyfriend, in MD, said he heard them the other night..

...I did NOT just see that   :o

Idiots come from everywhere.

Lil' Hannah 05-16-2004 05:10 PM

I can't believe someone has bid $11 for that stupid cicada.

I'm already sick of them. One was in my friend's car today. I was in the back seat FLIPPING OUT. He wasn't happy with me carrying on, but whatever I was scared.

mu_agd 05-17-2004 09:41 AM

today's metro had a picture of a telephone pole covered in these things. they looked so gross. kind of glad we're not supposed to be getting them here.

DWAlphaGam 05-17-2004 09:53 AM

Beware of the health risks of cicadas!

Pediatrician Warns Parents About Cicadas
Fri May 14, 2004 01:04 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - First there was the girl who fell off her bike fleeing a flying cicada. Then a boy trying to swat a cicada out of the air with a baseball bat instead hit his friend in the nose.

The final straw came when another child hurt his hand trying to squish a cicada under a car's tires. Dr. Ray Baker of Cincinnati Children's Hospital was convinced -- cicadas can be a safety hazard to children.

Last night a cicada landed on the outside my screen. Eeeeeeeeeeeew. I flicked it off.

The1calledTKE 05-17-2004 07:07 PM

I see on the list Georgia is suppose to have them but I haven't even seen one. Maybe they are in the more wide open rural areas.

Because of my fascination with these buggers.. my boyfriend has threatened to leave his windows open at night so I can't sleep because of them...

are they THAT noisy?!?!

If they are.. I might have to stay in New Hampshire instead of venturing to Maryland.. :p

XOMichelle 05-17-2004 07:14 PM

I remember that year!!
our nice new trees got eaten up in the backyard and my Mom had to re-plant them

PlymouthDZ 05-20-2004 12:57 PM

Ok, this is gross, ina way, but SO COOL.

My boyfriend sent this to me..

smiley21 05-31-2004 11:29 AM

apparently being in florida means that i am out of the general area of the evil creatures.....wahoo!!!!!!!!!!

SSS1365 05-31-2004 11:52 AM

I was all freaked out about them, but they are really not that bad. I even think they're kinda cute... for bugs. The noise is really annoying though. We have a few in my neighborhood. I can hear their screeching, but I never really see them. At the in-laws' house, however, they are EVERYWHERE and they're so loud you can't even hear yourself think!

Intense1920 05-31-2004 03:00 PM

I'm really getting tired of them flying into my windshield when I'm driving to and from work. UGH.

Lil' Hannah 05-31-2004 10:48 PM

I'm sick of having to drive with my windows up. I know if I roll them down, one of those mickeyfrickeys will fly in and then all hell will break loose.
