My turn, my turn....

Since the summer began (actually, about a month before), I've been reading different books. The books I've read so far are:

1. Nigger: The Strange Career of a Troublesome Word by Randall Kennedy (good book; he really did his research) There's an interesting anecdote about Tiger Woods which may explain why he wants to be referred to as a Cablinasian....
2. Sister, Sister by EJD (great read!!! :D )
3. Milk in My Coffee by EJD (good read)
4. Liar's Game by EJD (good read, but didn't like the ending)

I just bought three more books from the Black Arts Festival in ATL. They are:

1. Cheaters by EJD
2. Beloved by Toni Morrison
3. The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison (read it already; excellent read)

Books I enjoy reading over & over are:

1. The Coldest Winter Ever by Sister Souljah
2. Disappearing Acts by Terry McMillan
3. Mama by Terry McMillan (I LMAO each time I read it)
4. I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou
5. Sister, Sister by EJD
6. Sula by Toni Morrison (some of the characters are funny!)

Those are my rays of sunshine.http://www.plauder-smilies.de/natur/sunny.gif Until next time, people!!!

AKA2D '91 07-29-2002 12:12 PM

:o...is that the same "person" who writes about...you know...STUH, such as crankin'?

flyygyrl1908 07-29-2002 12:27 PM

It did drag toward the very end but overall it was a good book. Yes indeed the scenes were VERY interesting.;) The plot also had a few unexpected turn of events that made you want to not put it down.

I just finished reading Addicted and it was off the hook!
*in my best Forrest Gump impression* "And that's all I have to say about that!"

I have also read by Pipe Dream Solomon Jones. It was good all the way throught the end. I couldn't put it down.

I don't remember the author, but Someone to Catch My Drift was great!

I have to read The Sex Chronicles and The Heat Seekers by Zane. She is an entertaining author. :D

OneOneTwo 07-31-2002 01:33 AM

EroticaNoir.com

...is her Official Website (ZANE). She hasn't updated in a while but the stories she and others have posted... wait, I promised myself I would be a good boy. And then there are the tips... wait, are there any children in the room... let me advise that this is not the kind of discussion or viewing you want to have with children in the room.

I just read the whole thread and the book White Teeth by Zadie Smith was not mentioned by any one. Has anyone read this book. I thought the book was fabulous. It's about 3 families, (Indian, Jewish and mixed Black and White) and their interactions in a London suburb. The characters are crazy and extreme (which I loved), the story is great and the ending is great. The book also crtitiques colonialism, neocolonialism and race relations. From the people who I've talked to about the book I have come to the conclusion that you either love it or you hate it. I recommend this book to anyone though, it's an enjoyable read!

SeriousAKA 08-01-2002 11:37 AM

Ihave been a reading fool this summer! I've finished Married Men by Carl Webber and LOVED IT!! I also read EJD's Theivers Paradise, I liked it, not as much as Cheaters or Between Lovers, but it was good. In Milk in my Coffee, was anyone surprised that homegirl was mixed?

I purchased E. Lynn's new book yesterday and am almost finished.

Hmmm....what next?

Read it it is real good! Plus it gives you a perspective on how men think ;)

Skater_de_WMU 08-01-2002 04:18 PM

I was just like most people described as the typical college student who dreaded reading anything put in front of them. I think this is partially because of the fear of having to write a paper about the book lol. Since I have the summer off me and one of my friends have been reading a couple of EJD's books. So far I've read Friends and Lovers and Cheaters. I've loved both so far and want to try reading some books by other authors that have been listed so far. I'm not sure if I'm old enough for the Sex Chronicles though lol.

SeriousAKA 08-02-2002 02:59 PM

O... I finished A Love of my Own last night. Let's just say, I'm too happy about it. It was ok but....I'll let ya'll read it first!

------------------
The values of life are not measured in visible things, but in divine things. Every day is a gift from God, whatever it brings. That is why it is called THE PRESENT! -unknown

I read that one too. It was so real it was like something that would happen in my neighborhood. I like those. Now I'm a big Carolyn Bessette Kennedy fan (the classy style icon wife of the late JFK,jr.) I read his book the American Son. It gives striking accounts of his days with his magazine George and it tells about his wife Carolyn and how she felt she had to compete with him by using her beauty and style. If anyone is interested in seeing her you could probably check her out at www.carolynbessettekennedy.com if that's not it just type in her name you're find her and see the style that she memited from Jackie Onassis.

Maryann Reid

I bought her book Sex and the Single Sister. Some of the buzz around the book called it the Black answer to Candace Bushnell, SATC creator. We'll see.

I actually like what's been called "chick lit." One of my favorites in the genre is Tama Janowitz's A Certain Age.

Not really, because it can happen to anyone. I also wasn't surprised b/c when Jordan mentioned when she bent down, he thought she had a rather shapely rear, which not many White women have if they're purely Caucasoid. JMHO....

lil_sunshine 08-21-2002 01:34 PM

I've currently read.....

Cheaters by EJD and Beloved by Toni Morrison. I enjoyed both books and thought that Beloved was kinda confusing at times. I had to read some parts of the book at least twice to make sure I understood it. Cheaters was good, and I'm glad Darnell decided to follow his heart. And that's all I have to say about that!!!:D

Re: Maryann Reid

This has been a busy summer for me, but I did manage to read four books and I enjoyed them all. Two of them were part of Oprah's now defunct bookclub. My favorite bookstore offers an additional 20% off of books she selects, so I end up reading quite a few of them.

1. White Oleander by Janet Fitch - Good book until the end. It starts to drag about 3/4 through, but it redeems itself with a mediocre ending.

2. She's Come Undone by Wally Lamb - Aboslutely loved this book. I don't think there's anybody out there that can't relate to the main character, Dolores. I'd recommend it.

3. Divine Secrets of the Ya Ya Sisterhood (author's name escapes me right now) - Decent book, but not something to run out and buy. It held my attention, but it did leave something to be desired. I heard the book was better than the movie, if that tells you anything. However, it does give you a warm and tingly feeling at times.

4. I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb - Another good book. Lots of good commentary on relationships between siblings, parents and God. It's pretty long, but worth the read.

I really liked this book! From the beginning to the end, especially when the main character had the friendship with the black woman...interesting. However I do agree that it ended with little fanfare. I didn't think that was how it was going to turn out.

Another Oprah book (lol) that I thought was good was We Were the Mulvaneys by Joyce Carol Oates. Another one that I finished reading over the summer was Lalita Tademy's Cane River...that I definitely recommend.

See, ya'll talking about some ZANE...I have The Sex Chronicles and it is off the hook. Looking forward to reading her other two works real soon.

Since I'm an English major with a lit concentration, I'm always running across some good works. I'm sorry ya'll but I am just now getting into some Toni Morrison...I have read Sula as well as Song of Solomon as well as works by other black women such as Paule Marshall and Jamaica Kincaid.

Most of what I have to read for class is old, but good. I'm happy that I picked this major :D

The Coldest Winter Ever

Has anyone read The Coldest Winter EVer? From what I understand, the book has been out for a few years. I just want some input before I go and buy it.

Help me out sorors.

skywalker20_99 08-22-2002 09:37 AM

I loved "Sugar" and the sequel "This Bitter Earth", by Bernice McFadden. I highly recommend both.

Thanks for the input on The coldest Winter Ever. I will pick both books up this weekend.

I also read Cane River (I think there's a discussion on here about it) and I did enjoy it. It was slow at times, but overall a good read. Another Oprah book that was pretty good is While I Was Gone by Sue Miller. It's about an average, middle age woman with a lot of skeletons in her closet. I'd recommend it.

E. LYNN HARRIS DOES IT AGAIN

I just finished reading "A Love of my Own" By E. Lynn Harris. It is a page turner just like the rest of his books. I read this book in 1 day!!! If you're a fan of his, or want to be a fan...I suggest this book.

Just started Veronica Chambers' Having it All? about black women and success. I like what I've read so far, because many of the situations that she describes have happened to me.

Also, on the non-black tip, I'm reading Rick Marin's Cad: Confessions of a Toxic Bachelor. The title hooked me because "toxic bachelor" is used by Candace Bushnell of Sex and the City fame.

I'm also planning to get Acting Out by Benilde Little, and later this year, I want to get The Devil Wore Prada about binchy Vogue magazine editor Anna Wintour and Bushnell's book that's supposed to come out in April.

Since I have a heavy job, I like light reads.
