I LOOOOOVE sushi!!! Like it rocks!! I'm so mad that I missed Chabad's sushi night though....there was a sushi chef who tought everyone how to make sushi! I tried some last night and it was way good!! But yes, this thread has officially made me want to go to a sushi restaurant and get some sushi!!

Glitter650 02-05-2004 10:54 PM

Wow you all pay a lot for you sushi.. it's pretty damn cheap here.. probably because there's a place like every three blocks :D You can eat sushi at a pretty nice place for like 10 dollars for like a FULL meal.. two rolls, rice and miso.

Unregistered- 02-05-2004 11:06 PM

$10 sounds about normal for a full sushi meal, and one can add a la carte stuff from the Robata bar at an additional price.

We have a sushi bar called Sushi King that's open till 2AM every night. We've been known to hit up that place after going to the bars. After 10:30PM, $15 for their Chirashi special gets you practically all the sushi on their menu.

RioLambdaAlum 02-06-2004 12:38 AM

sometimes i like it.......sometimes i don't.

ladyj39 02-06-2004 03:50 AM

There was an awesome place about a block away from my old house that my roommate and I loved! I could get Tempura Udon, spicy tuna rolls, and tempura rolls all for $11!

Besides the rolls I mentioned, I love hamachi (nigiri or sashimi) and the dragon roll from a restaurant in SF called Kitaro. It's a California roll topped with cooked salmon, capers, and this really yummy cream sauce. MMMmmmm.....

BabyP 02-06-2004 05:41 AM

California roll of course!!! I am a cali girl!!

SSS1365 02-06-2004 07:04 AM

I am a total addict. I just got married and quite a few of the gifts were sushi-related.

My favorite is eel. Sure, the idea of eating an eel is disgusting, but it tastes so good! So I just try not to think about what it is I'm actually eating ;)

ThetaGrrl 02-06-2004 12:06 PM

What kills me is when you see someone put a whole piece of sushi (rice and all) into soy sauce...

You are supposed to take the piece of fish off, dip that in, put it back on the rice, and then eat it.

Of course, referring to California rolls as sushi kinda ticks me off too, because it's *so* Americanized.

Oh goodness, I'm such a sushi snob.

I tried it for the first time last month. I am not a fan, but I am proud to say I TRIED IT. :D

sigtau305 02-06-2004 12:46 PM

I had my first try of Sushi last week and it was pretty good.

Lady Pi Phi 02-06-2004 01:05 PM

I love Sushi!!!! I actually just had some for lunch!!!

Also, it's great for those of us on weight watchers. It's really low on points!

4 pieces of sushi is only 2 points!

oceanphi01 02-06-2004 01:22 PM

I heart sushi so bad!!! And what's even better is that about half of our chapter is addicted to it too. Yeay!!!!

lifesaver 02-06-2004 08:43 PM

I've never had Sushi. No, not even a cali roll. I have had smoked salmon that wsnt cooked and had a raw flava to it. I live in a town of 1.5 million - so its not from lack of opportunity -just never have. Want to - just never have. I'll try almost anything once.

But I will not eat tripas. I said ALMOST anything.

Buttonz 02-07-2004 09:49 PM

I had some great sushi for lunch today...took home the leftovers going to go finish it up soon. Yum!

ADPi~Ally 02-07-2004 10:10 PM

sushi is great. I love it. There are some great sushi resturants where I go out.

AznSAE 02-07-2004 10:23 PM

i went to the grocery store today and bought the ingredients to make sushi (americanized sushi - california roll). it was my first time to make it and it turned out okay, but it was think and huge. i didn't have the roller to push it all together and i think i put too much rice.

ladyj39 02-09-2004 04:52 AM

My BF and I bought one of those wooden sushi makers at a fair with big dreams of having sushi parties with friends. We've still never used it. I will someday....:p It's just so much easier to go to a restaurant!

SATX*APhi 02-09-2004 05:01 AM

I had sushi Friday night. Yum!

Jadey28 02-13-2004 11:43 AM

I'm pretty basic when it comes to sushi. I start off with Rice Soup and I usually have the tuna rolls (spicey or regular), California rolls, or the shrimp and salmon rolls. (Sorry, I don't know the authentic Japanese names) I'm too afraid to try anything like eel. I'm a picky eater and liking sushi is a really big step for me! :)

Yum, I think that's what I will have for dinner tonight.

AznSAE 07-29-2004 01:15 PM

i had sushi for lunch yesterday and for the first time in 4 months. it was yummy. i need to start buying the ingredients cause it gets expensive :(

chideltjen 07-29-2004 01:26 PM

MMmmm... I can't believe I didn't sign this thread. Or maybe I have and I missed it.

I'll eat just about any time of roll as long as it doesn't have eel, squid or octopus in it. Never got used to the texture.

But salmon, tuna, and yellow tail are my fav pieces in sashimi dishes and I like rolls with avacado, cream cheese, and or cucumber.

Tokyo Fro's is kind of a trendy sushi place. But they make some cool creations.

ragtimerose 07-29-2004 01:40 PM

I stick to the plain and simple. I like my kappa-maki (cucumber rolls).

This thread is making me hungry!

Yeah... Mikuni's is really good. Except you have about a 2 hour wait on most nights.

smiley21 07-29-2004 02:21 PM

i only eat sushi if it has been cooked. why do alot of people think that sushi is just raw fish? that is only one kind. they are many different kinds that are so good!! i know that i am nutty cause i like to put enough wasabi in the soy sauce to make tears come down my face. that is my adrenaline rush:p

Kevin 07-29-2004 02:23 PM

Sushi is good.

No one I know around here likes it though.

kk_bama 07-29-2004 02:30 PM

MMM..I absolutely LOVE sushi. I love anything made with tuna or salmon -- rainbow rolls are awesome! I had my first tamago over spring break down in West Palm Beach.

I really love the simplicity of good sashimi. I'll try anything!

Too bad I am in Alabama though...there's a couple places here in Tuscaloosa that have sushi, but none that fantastic. I prefer to go home to Atlanta for sushi.

IowaStatePhiPsi 07-29-2004 02:35 PM

the closest thing to sushi in Ames is the take-home sushi entrees at Hy-Vee's Chinese Express. Only the California rolls are good, and I dont trust their Salmon Rolls.

jharb 07-29-2004 02:35 PM

I love sushi! I really like California rolls, spicy tuna rolls and then the egg ones (can you tell I order by picture?). There's a great place in Indy called Mikado that I think is a chain. It's a great place to go with a lot of people and try a ton of different kinds.

KSigkid 07-29-2004 02:55 PM

I like it, but I wouldn't say I'm a sushi lover.

Any of the Boston people have favorites in the city? I've had Ginza, which was pretty good.

smiley21 07-29-2004 03:48 PM

i know i said it before, but i LOVE sushi. as long as it is not squid, eel, or octopus and only if it is cooked, i will eat it all:D

amycat412 07-29-2004 03:56 PM

Mr amycat loves to fish. He came home Sunday night with 200lbs of Albacore and Yellow Tail.

There is nothing better than the butter like consistency of albacore sashimi that has only been out of the ocean for a few hours...

Of course when we fish together and the mates whip up dorado ceviche from a dorado we've just caught--OMG so good!

I am a tuna, yellow tail, albacore, blue fin girl. Seared Ahi is one of my favs too.

Unfortunately, people are woefully misinformed... not all sushi is raw and not all sushi is made with fish, though the majority are.

Tamago (egg omelet) - Truly the sushi chef's hallmark; in Japan, a customer is well within his rights to walk out of the sushi bar if the sushi chef serves him a badly-made tamago.

Unagi (fresh water eel) - Always served cooked, broiled with a special soy-based sauce called tare.

Ebi (shrimp) This one's cooked. If you order ama ebi you'll get it served raw.

Wasabi soup! Nothing like a nuclear-strength sushi dip to clear up the sinuses! :D Some sushi chefs put in a little wasabi when assembling their sushi.

Shima-Mizu 07-29-2004 05:18 PM

I love unagi, sushi and sashimi.

I only like the smaller of the 2 main fish eggs... I forgot which one those are at the moment though.

Hopefully I'll have some nice authentic food next year, I'm a Japanese major and my roomie and I are planning on going abroad next summer.

Thank you Chuck, for being the voice of reason.

Steam comes out of my ears whenever I hear "I hate sushi. I don't like eating raw fish."

My bar serves the best hamachi on the island, and once in a while I'll be naughty and take some wasabi home just so I can make wasabi soup to clear the sinuses!

Not a problem, Sandy... I used to think of sushi as "Ewww! how grossitating... eating raw fish!" until I was shown the error of my ways by a Hawaiian co-worker of mine back when I was living in Sacramento. Now I'm hopelessly addicted to sushi, sashimi and sake! :D

Now if I want a bowl of saimin or a Hawaiian plate lunch, there isn't very much of anything here in Dallas, though there are a few good casino restaurants in Vegas that do a pretty good job. One o' these days I gotta get me to Hawai'i! :)
