One of our members that pledged last year has a 7 year old daughter named Hannah and I just have to think that her grandmother (who was a DG) had something to do with that.

I've never thought about naming my children after DG but I have thought about the rooms. Hannah dolls for my daughter and Anchors for my son.

But I do have a few options if I need them.....

Mary
Eva
Anna
Hannah

I personally would go for Octavia, but I don't think my fiancee will go for that.

aephi alum 01-23-2004 08:15 PM

D'oh! I just realized that I can't name my kids after any of AEPhi's founders!

It is Jewish tradition to name a child for a deceased relative, but only to use the first letter of the relative's name. For instance, you might name your child Jennifer after her grandfather Jacob. (You can cross genders.)

I had a grandmother named Helen and my husband has a grandmother named Rose, so there go three of the founders. As for the other four, they don't share any initials with any of my or my husband's relatives.

Fortunately there aren't any G's either, so my future offspring don't have to worry about being named Giraffe after all ;)

I thought of this thread when we went to Eckerds. The convenience store next door had this on their street sign

"BUD MILLER COORS"

That is my middle name :)

AGDAlum 01-24-2004 09:14 AM

At least one PiPhi I know has a cat named Carrie, after Carrie Chapman Catt. (She was a pioneer women's suffragist and a member of Pi Phi.)

With a middle name of "Dorcus," your daughter will never be taunted in school.

breathesgelatin 01-24-2004 05:26 PM

Jennie Nicol, M.D.
Libbie Brook Gaddis
Clara Brownlee Hutchinson
Ada Bruen Grier
Emma Brownlee Kilgore
Fannie Thomson
Margaret Campbell
Jennie Horne Turnbull Rosa Moore
Nancy Black Wallace
Inez Smith Soule
Fannie Whitenack Libbey

I actually really like some of the Pi Phi founders' names. I don't see me naming my daughter "Fannie", but Clara Brownlee and Emma Brownlee would be really pretty first/middle names. I like Ada too.

KSUViolet06 04-03-2004 01:47 PM

I would name my daughter Isabella (founder) :)

Angels&Arrows 04-03-2004 03:21 PM

My sister-in-law's old roommate in NYC named her dog KayDee... She was a Kappa Delta at U. of Flordia...

Jill1228 04-03-2004 03:41 PM

Well I have "nicknames". When I found out one of my sisters in LA was pregnant, I named the baby "Baby Phi"

When I found out she was having a girl, I named it Forget-Me-Not Ivy...so that is the baby's nickname.

She is due next month and has YET to have a name picked out. :D

Tom Earp 04-03-2004 04:55 PM

DORCUS!

My Great, Great Grandmothers Name! She was married to Wyatt Earps Fathers Brother!:)

Only Dorcus I ever heard about, very interesting!:D

starang21 04-03-2004 06:27 PM

dorcus?

what the hell? can that name even be traced back to anything?

Sistermadly 04-03-2004 06:32 PM

I know a girl named Dorcas.. and I think it's a greek name.

Unregistered- 04-03-2004 06:42 PM

Since no AGD has mentioned it yet...

Out of our 11...

Marguerite Shepard
Estelle Shepard Beswick
Flora Knight Mayer
Georgia Dickover
Georgia Otis Chipman
Mary Louise Snider
Jennie Titus Smith Morris
Ethel Brown Distin
Grace Mosher Harter
Edith MacConnell Hickok
Emily Helen Butterfield

I've always liked the names Emily and Georgia. Marguerite is beautiful too...and my middle name's Grace (even though that has nothing to do with my Founders ;) ).

MelodyCat 04-03-2004 08:29 PM

The name Dorcas is Biblical - she's mentioned in the New Testament, particularly in the book of Acts, as one of the leaders of the early church.

It's also the same name as Tabitha, unless I have that mixed up with another name. I like both Tabitha and Dorcas!

Tippiechick 04-03-2004 08:48 PM

I could easily see a ZTA giving their child the middle name Zeta.

I could also see myself giving any future daughter the middle name Campbell.

It's not only my maiden name, but it is also a name of one of our founders: Mary Campbell Jones Batte.

Frances is also a middle name possibility as it is a founder's name and my mother's middle name.

vandy_violet 04-03-2004 09:05 PM

I've thought that it would be cool if Catherine Zeta Jones' daughter, Carys Zeta, went to an American university and joined Zeta...As for ADPi names (I'm the only ADPi in the family), my cousin has a son named Andrew William (Andrews and Williams), and Elizabeth is my grandmother's name, so pretty much every one of my cousins and I are going to have daughters with Elizabeth as their middle name (we already have Grace Elizabeth and Carrie Elizabeth). I would also totally name my son Evan. He could be Evan Tucker...Evan Fitzgerald...Evan Pierce...Evan Andrew...Evan William....as for Octavia, that's actually my favorite. It really is pretty, just very unconventional. I believe Octavia was the wife of Marc Antony and the sister of Octavian (or Octavius?), one of the Caesars.

Senusret I 04-03-2004 09:20 PM

Of all my APhiA founders, I'd only consider the name "Eugene" for a son.

NinjaPoodle 04-03-2004 09:50 PM

  • Mary Lou Allison Gardner Little
  • Vivian White Marbury
  • Bessie Downey Rhoades Martin
  • Cubena McClure
  • Dorothy Hanley Whiteside
  • Nannie Mae Gahn Johnson
  • Hattie Mae Annette Dulin Redford

Hmmm.. I love my founders but all of these names are a little to old school for me but but if I had to choose , Annette is the winner.

ETA:
For a boy, Elias Dorsey (Iota Phi Theta) for first and middle names, Langston Taylor (Phi Beta Sigma)also for first and middle names, and Ernest (Omega Psi Phi).:D

HeavenslilAngel 04-04-2004 02:24 AM

For the ZTA's......Leigh is a good name (its my first name) :)

Anyway, I would name my kid Calva Louise most likely. I like the names together and one of my biological sister's first name is Mary and my other sister is Julie so that rules out Mary and Juliette. My dog or cat would be Alphie or Siggy.

Alpha Sigma Alpha Founders:

Virginia Boyd Noell

Calva Watson Wootton

Louise Cox Carper

Mary Williamson Hundley

Juliette Hundley Gilliam

I'm pretty sure your daughter would have a miserable childhood if you named her Dorcas.;)

I agree. She would have to look like Pamela Anderson, have an IQ of 180, and be a champion kick boxer to survive that name.

FSUZeta 04-04-2004 10:07 AM

dorcas

Greek, meaning "roe or gazelle". a translation of the aramaic name tabitha.biblical, found in the new testament, acts 9:36. common name during the roman empire, also found as dorchas.

there was a judge in jacksonville, florida named dorcas drake, who had a big charity christmas party for underpriveledged children every year.

kstar 04-04-2004 11:22 AM

In the Roman Empire, you named daughters by the feminime form of the family name (surname) and after the first daughter, by number. Octavia then, is the eighth daughter.

Cornelia Sextia would be the daughter of the Cornelius family and the sixth daughter. However, most girls would go by their middle names, since all the daughters would have the first name Cornelia.

MooseGirl 04-04-2004 11:57 AM

let's see, our founder's first names
josephine, ethel, fay, estelle, lillian, shirley, rose, Gwen, Claire, and Jeanette.

I had a friend named Jeanette when I was little, so I like that name...doubt I would use it. I have family member's who are already named Rose (first and middle) so I wouldn't want to use that (don't like to name after relatives too much)

I would prolly use Fay and Gwen though...I think they sound nice

Huh...if we have any more kids, I can see us using "Rosa", more likely Rose...of course, ASLFRose will claim that we're doing it for AOII!

Hey, angels! We could use Angela!

Tom Earp 04-04-2004 04:47 PM

WOW, Did not know Dorcus ment that much! She was uglier than Sin!

Male: Thomas +++!:) You May fill In The Rest!

Lot of History to that and Mine!:D

Every Sun. Morn one of the TV Stations show pix and names of little 1 years Old, Some Cute Names, but spell Diff!

Nikki_DZ 04-04-2004 04:48 PM

*raises hand* I would be somewhere who snuck a GLO reference into my child's name.

My daughter's middle names are Rose Mary (two separate words). Rose comes from Delta Zeta's flower, the beautiful Killarney rose. Mary is in honor of her late paternal grandmother.

A sister suggested that my little angel's first name be Killarney, but I drew the line there :)

abaici 04-04-2004 04:57 PM

I like Lillie (or Lily)

I always wanted to name my girl after my maternal and paternal grandmothers. One being a founder's name that I do not like. But, I'm all for a variation Allison, instead of Alice.

Adelphean1851 04-05-2004 01:58 AM

Ok this is stretching it a little but how about Adelpheana? Delpi for short. It could work...

CardinalSM 04-05-2004 02:16 AM

Hmmm our founders name choices are:

Charles Richardson
Jobelle Holcombe
Jean Vincenheller
Alice Cary Simonds
Ina May Boles

I would consider the name Charles for a boy, and Alice and Carrie are family names so a maybe on those too. I kind of like the combination Alice Cary.

Diamond Delta 04-05-2004 11:12 AM

Beary??? I couldn't inflict such a name on my child!!! As for Quillin, is that a male or female name?

But I did really like Erin (of course I did, it's my name! :D), Alethea (I had a friend named this in HS), Tierney, and Felicity, just b/c they're pretty names.

KillarneyRose 04-05-2004 03:39 PM

We moved to a new house a couple of weeks ago and our next door neighbors have a little girl named Hannah. I didn't think anything of it until I heard her mom call her "Heartless Hannah" a couple of times. I asked why she had that nickname and the mom laughed and said Heartless Hannah was a song her sorority used to sing in college. You guessed it; Hannah is a DG legacy :)
