A few more:

1. If your husband puts his shoes under the bed, don't remove them. If you do, he will leave you.

2. If your hand itches, money is coming your way, but if you scratch the itch, you will not get the money.

3. Never let a pregnant woman comb your hair. It will make your hair fall out.

4. Never cross a black cat's path. You will have bad luck.

5. Never wash clothes on New Year's Day, because if you do, you will wash someone out of your family (death).

sweet_c 03-31-2001 03:21 AM

Here's one: If a woman walks around barefoot she will have cramps

OhSoPrettyNikki 03-31-2001 06:16 PM

Ok I had to join in!

When someone does your hair you should never say thank you, say more hair!

If you count your braids your hair will fall out!

One should burn their hair that comes from their head (via comb, brush, falling out, any means)

If a baby is teething place a egg in the infants sock and hang it in the doorway to the childs room and teething wont hurts.

Giving a child a black fist charm wards of evil spirits, also the evil eye charm.

If you ears are ringing someone is talking about you so bite your tongue and they will choke on their words.

If your eye jumps ( I forget which one) then that's bad luck.

If a bird sh*ts on your head that's good luck! Go figure.

um uh rah I'll think of more!
And yes exquizit its me the orginal PN!!!!

Oh and call this a co-inky dinky but everytime a man gives me jewelry, we breakup and not long after the jewelry breaks! That's spooky! But I love jewelry!!!

Never have oral surgery on a cutting moon or you will bleed more.

exquizit 04-23-2001 08:25 PM

yall the one about the fish dreams are really spooky! Just this week my Grandma had the fish Dream and said someone in the family is pregnant....she's never wrong! Two of my Cousins are!

blueberi1920 04-25-2001 02:04 PM

The one about the fish dreams, is really true. Happens all the time in my family.

Also anothe rone, is that if you have hiccups, someone is talking baout you and if you say their name, your hiccups will stop.

LadyAKA 04-25-2001 03:24 PM

Besides the FISH dream can anyone testify to some of these other superstitions being real? I just reread these and some of them are deep. Like the HAG thing, I just had this experience a couple of nights ago, I did not think to reach for my bible or call out the lord's name, but I tell you it is scary, very scary. Also about the witch craft, I am sure if someone gets a hold of your teeth or your hair they can do something, but has anyone really seen it happen - what's a girl to do at the hairdresser, BYOB (bring your own brush)?

Lastly PrettyNikki, I also heard about the "DON'T say thank you" to the person that does your hair, but isn't that rude .... what's a girl to do?

Well, I wonder if this is true. What I heard is that if you actually fall, YOU will really die, in real life. This is what I wonder if it's true. According to The Matrix (there is some truth in all fiction, I think):

Neo: If you die in the matrix, do you die here, too?
Morpheus: The body cannot live without the mind.

I still burn my hair sometimes, too. My grandmother told me that if a bird finds it, they'll keep coming back and peck in my head.

LMAO, Soror AKA2D'91, why would anyone walk around with one shoe on?? LMAO!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Soror LadyAKA, I'm LMAO @ you, too, BYOB, LOL!

My grandmother told me a variation of that one: If you go to a funeral, and you are on your "monthly", don't look at the body because your "monthly" will never stop.

Let me tell you a real life variation of this one..My best friends mom was pregnant and had the same dreamover and over about running with her newborn through the woods. On the last night she had the same dream except she dropped her baby, and it fell flat. She went into labor and the baby was stilborn(sp) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

She's trrified of dreams of falling!

Soror, you asked why and I said... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif (I DON'T know)! I just heard it, doesn't mean I have to understand it..LOL

Dionysus 04-29-2003 11:11 PM

I get this "witch riding" sensation every now and then. It freaks the heck out of me. It feels like I'm dying, sometimes I can't even breathe. Now that I've read the story behind it on here I'll probably be even more freaked out when it happens.

Not saying that they walk around outside and up the street like that, but you know how some people put on one shoe and walk around looking for the other? That's what the superstition means.

The variation that I heard is that if you walk around with one shoe, you are walking someone to their grave....

Silly superstition

If you hold a baby while you are on your period, the baby will be collicky.

ZTAMiami 04-30-2003 03:18 PM

I could write pages on this stuff! I'm Cuban and we believe some crazy things. Still, I'd rather be safe than sorry, you know:)

Baby with the hiccups - pull a piece of string off its clothes and stick it on his forehead with your saliva!

Baby coughing - blow on his forehead and lift his arms up

We pin an "asevache" on the baby to ward off the evil eye (it's a little black stone on a gold pin usually inscribed with 'God Bless Me' or 'Look at me but don't kiss me"

Never leave just 1 shoe or sock on - even if you are sitting down

Don't wash your hair at night - the night air will make you sick

Never put your purse on the floor - you'll lose all your money

Don't let anyone sweep your feet by accident - you'll never get married

Put a broom up against the wall behind a door if you don't want a particular person to come in

Cat washing its face means company's coming over

Right hand itches - money is coming your way - opposite hand, opposite outcome

Ok let me stop now!

evaclear04 04-30-2003 08:13 PM

I have heard of alot of these ( i.e. the dreams about fish, the broom, splitting the pole, purse on the floor)
And some of them are very new to me. Most of them i don't really put any stock in..but there are a few....
I am a definite believer in the dreams about the fish... I just had a dream about three weeks ago about me eating a fish dinner and sure enough my cousin-in law (?) is expecting.
My mom told me about calling the Lord's names when you can't move when trying to wake up when I was very young. I do it everytime....and seems to work for me.
I never put my purse on the floor...not because i think i will lose my money...but just beacuse floors are dirty.
Here's a couple of ones my mom has told to me:

Your house must be clean before the New Year begins or you will bring all of the problems from last year in with you.

Where you are when the New Year begins is where you will spend most of your time during that year.

New Year's menu should always include collard greens ( dollars) and black eye peas ( pennies).

If a baby kisses your stomach you will pregnant soon or already are.

More superstitions

Another one my great-grandmother used to say was:

Don't let two people do your hair at the same time or the youngest one will die first.

I still abide by this one.

My grandma just told me this afternoon to look at the moon before cutting your hair because if you cut it at the wrong time, it won't grow.

I bought my boyfriend a watch a few years ago, and he lost it. Maybe that really did negate the whole superstition. :)

A relative used to say that if you buy a man shoes, he WILL walk out of your life, but if a man buys you shoes, he's making sure you WON'T walk out of his life.

This made me laugh cause my boyfriend (the same one who lost the watch) has bought me my last couple pair of gym shoes. I guess his idea must've worked. :)

I heard that if you dream of falling and you land in the dream, you'll die in real life of a heart attack.

Since dreams can sometimes be real, I assume that your real heart rate is rising while you fall, and if you land in the dream that just might be more than the heart can take. You might have a sort of heart or panic attack.

Also, I heard that if you spill salt, you're supposed to throw it over your left shoulder for good luck. You won't get the same luck if you throw it over your right shoulder.

Christian 05-05-2003 02:25 AM

If you cut a boy's hair before he is a year old, he will steal.

If you sweep someone's feet, that individual is going to prison.

If you are talking about someone and they appear, that person will live a long time.
