Actually, I feel like once it gets below zero, I've never really noticed a difference between -10 and -40. It's all just way too cold for me. :)
|
When I was in school (many years ago) we had about a week of super deep freeze weather and they said that one day the wind chill was -70. I was all bundled up and walked to class. When I got to class, one of my eyes was really irritated. It turned out that my contact lens had frozen and cracked in my eye. Ouch! That's just too darn cold.
Heard a weather man saying this morning that at -44, any exposed skin will be frost bitten within 5 seconds! Yuk! I hate the cold more and more the older I get.. and we're getting inches and inches of snow today too. I am dreading the drive home from work. Dee |
At around -40 exposed skin can get frostbite in around 5 mins. not 5 sec but the usual range is around 5 to 10 min.

It is the coldest it has been in NYC since 1944. I am afraid to go out now because I don't want my contacts to freeze and crack.
|
Wear goggles or sun glasses so the wind can't get to 'em. That's what I do now.
We got about 5 inches of snow at home, about 6 inches at work.. see the "Snow" thread in Chit Chat.. ugh! 10 years ago tomorrow was the coldest day in Detroit history where the actual temp was -19 with windchills far below that. It was the day I brought my daughter home from the hospital after her birth! I was thrilled to be on maternity leave with one great reason to NOT leave the house for several weeks! Dee |

I didn't want to come into work today.
I would rather be in bed in my pj's all bundled up. Watching movies. Maybe I'll take tomorrow off...:D |
I feel bad right now - I was just watching the National and it showed that all of Canada except BC is under an extreme cold warning right now - today in southern BC we set record highs... the warmest place in the country: Victoria, BC at 13 degrees.
I think the -56 up in the NWT takes the coldest record... |
That's 13 Celsius for us Americans......................
I was just going to comment about the warm streak we're having too. |
I was freezing tonight. It was painful to be outdoors.
|
so when i went to sleep last night it was -30 with the windchill. we were supposed to hit records overnight for the cold. i don't want to go outside to wait for the t this morning.
eta: just checked, still -30 with the windchill. |

it's cold as anything here in boston - record lows is what they've been saying. i walk to work and need to be there for 7:30, so i'm generally walking through a pretty cold part of the day. i don't leave work till late, so the only time i'm out is when it's dark and freezing. needless to say, i'm getting sick.
i know i'm probably crazy for walking the mile to work, but the amount of time i'd wait for the train is comparable, and at least i'm keeping the blood flowing by walking. |

I had to get gas yesterday after class and my face was frozen. My hands were bright red and frozen from being outside for like 3 minutes. I'm at work right now and if someone comes in and wants to see one of the storage units I'll be like SCREW YOU it's too damn cold out, especially to touch metal. Yes! Michigan the feelin foreverrrrr |

If you want real cold - try Fairbanks, Alaska. I was up there last March, and it was (according to the locals) ONLY -5 - and they had t-shirts on, and windows opened for fresh air. I'm from Colorado, and I'm used to cold, but for crying out loud - if it's below 0, close the freakin' windows! They also showed me a video that they made in January last year when it was -45 (WITHOUT wind chill, mind you). They took a pot of boiling water and threw it up in the air outside of a house. Any guesses as to what happened? |
Been in the Bahamas for the past week. Very nice there.

DeltAlum is making me jealous! I'll be in the tropics in four weeks. :D I think that the water froze in mid air. |

Walking down the block to the store yesterday was TREACHEROUS!!! No one bothered to clear the ice in front of their house/building. I swear if either myself or my daughter would have fell, those folks would've heard from me!!! :( |
Fee Fee, I know! It is so slippery everywhere that I don't want to go out at all. It is downright dangerous. And that poor woman was electrocuted while walking her dogs on Friday in the Village. It is enough to turn me into a hermit until Spring arrives.

Every day as I leave my nice warm bed and nice warm house to head into the frozen wasteland I think to myself "The bears are the smart ones.. eat themselves silly then sleep all winter".

I'm not sure why it happens, but it is a function of extremely cold temperature. By the way, the aurora's are beautiful to behold, if you can stand the cold long enough to take them in as well. |
