I'm quite sure that these people ARE for real, for the most part. Of course once you put cameras on them you're guaranteeing that they're not going to react perfectly naturally to all situations. And there are a few examples of people who are obviously not trying to be taken seriously -- i.e. Puck -- but in general it would actually surprise me a lot if these people weren't at least 90 percent genuine.

First, MTV deliberately casts for people that are going to be overdramatic all the time. Second, they put them in a situation where most people would overreact to stupid stuff -- crammed into a house where they're sharing bedrooms (NO privacy), no television, no music, you have to get permission from the producers before you leave the house, you have to work with these people . . . And third, it's 18 minutes of footage each week. You take six of my friends and me and put us in a house together for a week and I'm sure you could cobble together 18 minutes worth of drama. Easily.

Besides, if MTV was making this isht up, we wouldn't be subjected to things like THREE episodes of the Paris season devoted to who was slacking on their deadlines for the book. MTV could make up some more interesting stuff than that.

I do think that MTV does some "influencing" of minor players -- like when NO Melissa revealed that their boss was a major jerk to them on camera but totally nice off camera -- but I think that the "seven strangers" are, well, pretty much being themselves.

TigerLilly 01-13-2004 06:43 PM

I agree that they're being their real selves, that MTV just searches out the most drama-causing people they can find. The girl who lived next door to me freshman year got through 3 or 4 levels of auditions, not quite sure, but she was definitely a drama queen, always in the hall on the phone yelling at someone, or yelling at someone in our dorm. All MTV needs to do is get one of those types in the house to wind everyone else up, and it's on.

blueGBI 01-13-2004 11:35 PM

I'm watching tonight and I respect Jacquese because if Robin said the n-word to me, I would be getting kicked off. Part of me does feel like MTV may have influenced Robin into saying it to start the first major drama and to get the first fight of the show. Part of me thinks that it slipped and she should know better than to say something like that and the history behind the word. It still gets me that she doesn't see what she did wrong but everyone else can see that she shouldn't have said it, even Brad. I don't know about the rest of the season, this will probably be a lingering issue.

ZTAngel 01-13-2004 11:39 PM

Robin is all like, "I'm from the South and we use that word all the time." Um...I'm from Orlando which is only a few miles from Tampa which is where she's from. I would NEVER use that word nor do I know anyone who would use that word freely.
The girl has got issues.

Cameran really needs to lay off the mascara. She's starting rival Tammy Faye.

FAUNikki 01-13-2004 11:57 PM

I dont know if I should feel bad for Frankie or wonder if she wants attention and creates her "illnesses." I am not in any way downing anxiety (I hate major social anxiety issues) or Cystic fibrosis. She kinda seems like the type to make things up for attention. I could be totally wrong though!!!

i heard about this mess from another site. man, people always think it's cool to say shit like that. what a dumbass.

azdtaxi 01-14-2004 12:47 AM

I hope I don't offend anyone with this ... but I was laughing so hard when Frankie said she was afraid of big boats. That is a strange anxiety disorder that I have never ever heard of before.

I think she's another Candace from the first Sorority Life -- she doesn't wash off her make up. It looks like she applies mascara on top of old mascara over and over again. When they show her at night with her face somewhat free of make up, the caked on mascara is still there.

Sister Havana 01-14-2004 01:12 AM

I think "Boom! Bazooka Joe!" is my new favorite random phrase. :D

My thoughts exactly!!!

gphiangel624 01-14-2004 04:06 AM

I usually don't watch MTV because the only "music" is background for the reality shows unless you have MTV2... but that's a whole other issue.

I'm only watching this season because I know Jamie and I want to see how her personality is on the show vs. real life. We aren't really buddy-buddy or anything (she lived with my lil sis for a while, everyone knows she's a Kappa and she hangs out with some of my good friends, we've hung out once or twice), but I know she's a really cool, very sweet and down-to-earth girl... and she kicked my chapter's butt during sports week the past few years! She can party, so I'm sure MTV will make her look like the usual "sorority/party girl" but in reality, she's a good person. I just hope they don't capitalize too much on any drama she may or may not get into.

Season looks like any other though... hooking up, phobias, fighting, race arguments... with some buzzworthy music in the background.

SparkliiQTMTSU 01-14-2004 05:34 AM

This season does look alot like the Vegas one and I thought it was interesting that even the 2 underage girls in the house were drinking at the club when they went out on the show tonite. Now how is that one possible and why would MTV be glorifing underage drinking???! hmm I understand them showing it happening in the house, but out in public thats another story.

Nichole

MeLikey 01-14-2004 06:56 AM

I felt bad for Frankie, MTV set that one up nice for added drama, I like Brad better after watching last night's show, liked when he stood up for Jacquese and when he was like if this house is getting cliquish that just needs to stop even though he is part of the clique.

butterfly2001nc 01-14-2004 11:50 AM

I can't believe that Robin didn't realize what she did that was so offensive. I am from the South also (North Carolina) and luckily didn't hear this word growing up and barely hear it now but it is wrong no matter who you are. It's just a deragatory word, has a bad background. She does seem to have some underlying issues BUT she should not have said it esp. since she just met Jaques .

(Why do people use the word anyways? don't understand it!)

Mad props to Brad who understand that you just don't use that word. Major respect for him. He's really does seem like a cool guy.

Camerin: not sure what to make of her yet..

Frankie: it's entirely possible to have anxiety attacks for even the smallest things...Hopefully, everyone will try to be there for her.

This season is definitely looking better than Paris!

33girl 01-14-2004 11:54 AM

OMG Robin's boobs!! Those things each need their own zip code. I would have been scared if I would be at Coyote Ugly and she was dancing on the bar with one of those over my head.

Boats!!! AAAAAGGGHHHH!!!!!!!! Freaky disorder, although when you look at the "weird habits" thread some of us don't have room to talk. ;)

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Hubby and I were thinking the same thing! How on earth that little tube top stayed on was beyond me. And hubby commented on how it must be getting cold in San Diego as someone was a "titty bit nipply"

Now now, don't make fun. I didn't see the episode, but boats have a tendency to freak me out too. Especially where the hull meets the water. Aye!

rho4life 01-14-2004 02:28 PM

It kills me that Robin was trying to rationalize her actions by saying "but I said 'a' not 'er'!"

Just as a heads up to all you GC'ers: NO MATTER HOW COOL YOU THINK YOU ARE WITH YOUR BLACK FRIENDS, DO NOT USE THIS "LOGIC". DON'T USE THE N-BOMB UNLESS YOU'RE IN A CLASSROOM DISCUSSION.

To help understand this consider the parallel of your mom. It's one thing for you to talk about her crazy habits, but if someone else does it it's offensive. Just b/c rappers use it, doesn't mean that you can do it.

That being said.......it's better than Paris already!

HAHAHA yeah.. it was especially funny when he was talking about it with the guys the next day, claiming he didn't remember saying it. Riiiight.... :p

ztawinthropgirl 01-15-2004 12:04 AM

[hijack]
Personally, I believe we all need to alleviate the n-word out of our vocabulary, whether you're Black, White, Asian, Latino, etc. It is not appropriate, in any pronunciation form, from any race.
[end of hijack]

Back to your normally scheduled thread!

Colonist 01-15-2004 12:52 AM

Cameron - She kills me, beautiful, funny girl
Frankie - Moronic drama queen who annoys the shit out of me
Jaqueze (or whatever) - a major tool, overdramatic d-bag
Brad and that other dude - Funny as heck
Jamie - Whiny biatch
Robin - Good god she is stacked, I think she is chill

SATX*APhi 01-15-2004 02:47 AM

I am watching the reruns right now and can't believe what I am watching!

Maybe the illegal silicone in her boobs has leaked into her brain pan. There's certainly enough of it.

what a dumb EXCUSE to say dumb shit. can anyone spit that for me?

xok85xo 01-21-2004 11:55 AM

okay.. a couple of things:

1) could brads teeth be any whiter? seriously, hes like tony robbins.

2) does anyone else think that jaqueese looks like skinny randy jackson?

33girl 01-21-2004 12:26 PM

I'm definitely not jealous - I think she looks gross.

And I don't care if she was faded or drunk or stoned or anything, that word (the "a" or "er" ending) should not be passing from her lips - then again if it does when she is faded/drunk/stoned I guess it shows what her true feelings are.

sugar and spice 01-21-2004 01:08 PM

If you don't say the word when you're sober, you're not gonna say it when you're drunk.

33girl 01-21-2004 01:15 PM

Actually - if you don't THINK it when you're sober you're not gonna say it drunk. You can avoid saying/doing things when sober but after you have a few your self-censorship abilities tend to fly out the window.

sugar and spice 01-21-2004 01:18 PM

Agreed -- but I think that if you let yourself get in the practice of saying it while you're sober it's certainly going to come out a lot easier when you're drunk.

Whatsherface -- Robin? -- strikes me as the kind of person who says it when she's around white people and pretends she doesn't use that word when she's around black people.

Yeah, that too. in other words, Robin = jerk.

jharb 01-28-2004 01:10 AM

OMG...did anyone else watch this tonight?!? SO MUCH DRAMA!

all I can say is, "Robin is missing, Brad's in Jail, what else can go wrong?"

also Ja running around with his "FREE BRAD" signs cracked my isht up!

azdtaxi 01-28-2004 01:13 AM

SO tonight was hilarious. But what the hell did Robin really do wrong? She barely even touched the guy.

Anyone else excited about the Inferno? I love the challanges

KerriMarie 01-28-2004 01:30 AM

Woo-hoo! I'm loving this season... I used to live in San Diego, so it's neat seeing places I've been on TV (not sure why that's so exciting, but it is!) and there's so much drama... yay drama!

I like Jamie a lot, and not just 'cuz she's a Kappa. She just seems like the coolest girl. Robin bugs me, Frankie is freaky, and I liked Cameran until that whole "Daddy, I need money!" thing... I'm kinda indifferent about the guys... they seem OK?

But yeah, I was cracking up when Brad and Randy (is that his name?) walked right by the cop car with Robin in it... so funny!

What is up with Frankie? If you don't want to cheat on your boyfriend, maybe not drink so much??

mullet81 01-28-2004 01:33 AM

i am LMAO at this season - these people are so drama-filled it's hilarious. I loved the homemade signs Ja and Randy were wearing - hilarious :)

I don't like robin, and frankie is freaky! Stop trying to hook up with all of your roommates!

cuaphi 01-28-2004 03:09 AM

Yeah, I would have said the Robin incident was completely overblown except for the fact that she just got in a shouting match with someone a couple of weeks ago. Anger management issues maybe....

I have to go back a week a say that her "deep" conversation in the hot tub with Randy cracked me up. Did anyone one else ever think that agnostics are people who defintely believe in a higher power?

They were obviously baked in the hot tub scene. And yeah, I loved how Randy kept going, "That's agnostics, that's agnostics." First of all, dumbass, that's agnostic, not agnostics. And second of all, no it isn't. Shut up.
