Don't know who deleted the threads. Don't know whether I ever posted there.

Is it possible, though, that including all of the graphics, etc., that these one and two word posts were eating up tons of server space?

Just a thought.

Hmmm, I doubt it. If that were the case, then John would have gone through and deleted all the registered members that have never posted...but I'm not the admin of this site so I couldn't answer you there

jharb 12-21-2003 02:04 AM

This makes me sad too! :(

I think john hasn't done that because a lot of people who haven't posted still come onto GC and pm other users and still "lurk" so to speak.

He addressed that not all that long ago.

Cluey 12-21-2003 02:22 AM

I would just like to add that I don't like post whores and that they annoy me.

Oh, and for once I am not being sarcastic.

FiReKraCkEr 12-21-2003 02:44 AM

I'm laughing so hard, I'm about to pee in my pants! Now we see who the "big dogs" really are...I'm mean posting wise :)

Dionysus 12-21-2003 03:23 AM

There was no good reason to delete my "have you ever" thread. There's many other threads with high post counts. If there was a problem with certain members posting back to back, then those posts should've been deleted, not the whole thread.

Kevin 12-21-2003 03:25 AM

I think it's a possability with this software to not show post counts. Something like that might actually be helpful.

xok85xo 12-21-2003 04:43 AM

i don't have any desire to read this entire thread, but all i'm going to say is f-ing wah. that is all.

lifesaver 12-21-2003 06:24 AM

ALSO...

Theres a chance the person who created the thread deleted their initial post.

It could /has happened.

That means I am now down -2 posts. Big Whoop. Seriously, NONE OF US should really care that much about posts. Honestly, theres NO difference between 5,241 posts and 4,878 posts. It all equates to the fact that none of us have lives, myself included.

ZTAngel 12-21-2003 10:50 AM

I, along with many others, lost a significant about a posts through the deletion of the word association thread. That's really the only thing I'm upset about. Sure the thread provides some boredom relief but so do half the other threads in the chit chat forum. I just think that out of all the threads that have been locked or deleted this thread is one that people should be least upset about.

Also, it may not have been a mod who did it. Like Lifesaver said, whoever started the thread may have deleted his/her post which causes the whole thread to vanish.

justamom 12-21-2003 11:56 AM

Who CARES about the number of posts they have. That's just plain silly.

I came late to the game and gee, I posted twice in a row!!! OH MY GOODNESS!

I doubt Dionysus would delete the thread. I could be wrong of course.

I didn't realize we were in a "at risk" situation with bandwidth...

Sure, no biggie that two rather innocent threads were wiped of the face of our little cyber universe, but it's the principle that seems to be the rub.

PM_Mama00 12-21-2003 12:02 PM

Not that I'm losing sleep over this, but more so just a wonder....

how come pointless threads don't get deleted? There are post whores and then there are starting-thread whores. If it's a matter of making more space on the forums or whatever, why not delete some of those?

Again, not losing sleep. Just at work terribly bored.

Tom Earp 12-21-2003 12:04 PM

While this is news to me, I knew nothing about it.:o

An individual cannot delet an entire thread unless they are a Mod on that Site.

An individual cannot even delet the post they made unless a Mod on that thread. They can edit it for contnet only.

As a Mod, I never delet a thread unless it is spaming or the original poster as me to. But here again, as a Mod, I can only do that if on one of my threads.

I have been asked to do this and had to defer to John and have him do it.

If there has been a serious problem in one of my site threads, I try to get some input from the other Mods be for so doing. I think that might be the best tact to take instead of someone just deleating a thread at a whim.

This has caused nothing but problems and some anger. I as a Mod apologize for this happening.

I too would like to know who and why. I hope this is not the first step to lets burn the books that we do not like! :(

I think it comes down to a quesiton of who gets to decide what threads are wastes of space?

I initially thought this wasn't so bad. The more I think about it, the more I don't like it. I'm with Tom on this one. I think this was just a single very irresponsible act. I hope it's not an indicator of things to come.

You never really know.

She could have deleted it but I'm not sure, but I won't say "I doubt" as I have no clue.

You'd be surprised at how much space 2000 pages of a post could free up on a server, being "at risk with bandwidth" or not. Remember, we aren't charged a penny for using this site, it is all paid for by John. So it wouldn't really matter if we were at risk or not because we arent paying for it to begin with.

It's easy to take for granted the things certain people (John) do for us. Let's think about that for a second here.

PM_Mama00 12-21-2003 12:18 PM

And if we're gona bitch about post whores, check out Arya's "In this thread"....

ETA: I feel the need to clear myself up here so people don't "get pissed at me"... I"m not bitching about those threads being deleted. I just asked a question. I have other things to worry about.

Then why wasn't "Random" deleted?

I couldn't tell you. I'm not a moderator of Chit Chat and I didn't delete the other threads in question.

I'm not saying that it was right because it's not but the fact is that it happened and arguing about it further will not bring the threads back.

Maybe the Random thread will be deleted along with other "post-padding" posts, but again I'm not sure because I'm not a Chit Chat moderator.

justamom 12-21-2003 12:28 PM

Damasa, I'm just feeling like a pickle today. Good points on the
2000 pages, and I do think we all appreciate John and what he has given us. Sometimes it easy to take GC for granted!:)

I know you said you could be wrong, but doubt is a pretty strong word ;)

j/k...anyway I want to try to stop this whole "movement against the mods" or whatever. I dont' know what happened, if a mod did it I don't know who did. But if a mod did do it, I know that not all seventy or so other mods were involved. So to blame them all is not a good thing. Yes, that is directed towards you absolutchick. Remember, you may be upset because of the posts you lost, but to single all the mods out is upsetting. I wasn't personally involved with any of it, hell I haven't been around much lately, but now I feel like I'm to blame for something I didn't do, don't know anything about and had no intent of doing. Please stop it.

33girl 12-21-2003 12:36 PM

Tim Russert just interrupted "Meet The Press" to share some stunning new information that post counts do not equal coolness.

No, I'm kidding. I'm watching the video for Joe Walsh's "The Confessor" (which I didn't even know there was one of). It rocks. :)

Heck, if I had things my way, we would just get rid of chit chat entirely!

Good thing I don't mod that forum...there would be a lot of deletions every time I got cranky.

James 12-21-2003 02:06 PM

Guys, newsflash, this just in.

There are identical threads in existance again!

As far as post padding. I don't care if you are deliberately trying to rack up a higher number or just like to post a lot. Its cool.

Personally, everytime I look at my post count it reflects on man hours lost . . . I probably could have written a significant piece of work with every thousand posts. Or at the length I write . . every 100 posts :)

The only thing I can say in my defense is that I have been on here since September, 1999. Some people have passed my post count in less than a year on site :p

I guess that means they are even less productive than I am . . frightening thought ;)

If you are just upset that your favorite game was deleted, well, they are back with only a few minutes worth of non-access.

If you regret that you can't view 15000 one word posts . . . well you have more time on your hands than I do. :p:

If your are upset that your post count fell. . . well . . get cracking. They are one word posts. You can do a thousand in a week.

If you are thinking it was directed at you personally. Get over your bad self. ;)

Tom Earp 12-21-2003 03:48 PM

deltababy, not needed to be posted, for a myrid of reasons, there is already a vengefull angle out there who seems to be doing it!:o

As far as deleting a post, it is not to be your decision alone, but others who are Moderators!

I hope you were putting this on here as a tongue in cheek statement!:)

If the case, then I bow my head to you!

If not, then some should take heed as to what is said and done! Not just making rash statements about deleting posts that You do not like, is not the way to do it!e! :)

This is not the thread to place something like this in either!:D

AXJules 12-21-2003 03:50 PM

I am tempted to say that this is the GHEYEST argument I have ever seen on GC.

I have an honest question though-

A few of you have said something to the effect of "I'm just upset because my post count dropped significantly" or whatever....NONE of you have said why. You're a senior member after 100 posts....do you realize there's no prize or anything when you hit a certain number of posts?? God....did you go from 2300 to 2102? Or, **gasp** even worse, from 3000 to 2000??? OMG you guys, with the amount of time you all spend on here you will make them back very quickly. I would be curious to hear exactly why any of you care about post losses so much.

~~Jules~~
I don't know if you know this but it's not like frequent flier miles or anything.

PhiPsiRuss 12-21-2003 04:05 PM

AGAIN!!!

The new Word Association thread was again deleted. There have been 2 "have you ever" threads deleted in the last 18 hours. The issue here isn't post count; I would be happy to see those threads not count for post totals - a feature that exists in vBulletin.

There has been no explanation by the one mod as to why this was done. This is creating a lack of trust in GC, and a clear demonstration of a lack of respect for others.

I have no idea which chit chat mod did it but they don't need to explian themselves. GC is not a democracy. Mods are not voted in by popular vote or electoral college. John appoints them and lets them run their forums they way they see fit. The only thing you can do is pm John and there is no guarentee he will do anything either. We get the point some people are un happy. Lets quit beating a dead horse.

absolutuscchick 12-21-2003 04:21 PM

I could care less about my post count. Once I reached senior member I stopped posting just to up my post count. It just bothers me that two of my favorite threads were deleted. To be honest, I think that if post whoring is such a big issue, we should just get rid of the post count all together, I mean honestly how is it a big deal?? I just liked thinking up responses for those two threads (yes, I admit I am a gigantic LOSER!!!)

But if that's the way it is then whatever!!! It's not really that big of a deal. I think I was just already annoyed with my parents after spending the afternoon, and this was just how I expressed it!!

My point is just that I can't believe feelings run this strong on either side of this issue.

This is a GREEKCHAT forum, and we are debating threads that have nothing to do with that.

absolutuscchick 12-21-2003 04:36 PM

guys. just get over it. honestly please lets stop bickering about this. Threads were deleted. People are unhappy. The mod who deleted them is not planning on telling us why. MOVE ON!!!! It's getting kind of sad how long people are dwelling on this, even though they were fun threads.

Try deleting a thread you started. You can't. You can only edit the original message. You would have to ask a mod of the particular forum to delete the entire thread on your behalf, but as popular as these threads were, I don't think that they would be deleted at the request of the thread starter(s).

I'm not saying anybody should continue to argue or ask questions, but wanted to point out to you that it hasn't even been 24 hours since this thread was first started. It may seem like it's been longer, but would seem that way when you (not you in particular) visit the thread several times in those 24 hours.
