And what was Peter Jackson thinking when he left out talking dogs that never even appeared in the Lord of the Rings books?

there was mention of it in the books, maybe not directly in the story...sorry if i didn't read the shit 10 times over right before the movie came out. BTW, have you gotten the elvish script off your head yet?

Uh, nope, sorry, no mention of a talking dog in LOTR anywhere. Just what was mentioned earlier with Cuon.
Glad to see other people have read The Silmarillion, too! :D

So after the movie I am laying in bed talking to a sorority girl I know . . and you know how you start fading into sleep?

Well I started thinking that her Sorority Chapter was going to send a relief army to the aid of Gondor . . . Ahhh . . . good movie.

cash78mere 12-21-2003 02:04 PM

i saw the movie last night and it was way too long. they should have cut it down by an hour. that first hour just dragged on and on. the only great part of the movie was the huge battle at the end.

James 12-21-2003 04:30 PM

Heresy!

I went with my friend to see it at the midnight showing last Wednesday, and didn't realize it was 3 hours and 42 minutes long. It cut off in the middle for 30 minutes, (which we got free tickets for), but I have to say it was my favorite. The first thing I said when it was over was, "YAY! CLOSURE!"

Rio_Kohitsuji 12-23-2003 11:29 PM

All I'm gonna say is that I looooved the series but d*mmit, I HATE Freudo!!! Freakin' wimp! I'll about Sam!! If it wasn't for him, lil hobbit boy woulda been dead in the first hour of the first movie :p

James 12-24-2003 03:02 AM

Yeah I agree . . , Frodo was none so weak in the books . . he was actually useful in the books insetad of a pansy . ..

Also, and I'll say it . . . Frodo and Sam in the movies are closet Homosexuals . . did you see the way they looked each other at the end of the movie? I would have swore frodo was going to kiss sam . . . And ladies . . guys don't do that!!

yeah there were some parts that got a lil gay............i have to admit......

MattUMASSD 12-24-2003 10:13 PM

"Mr. Frodo do you remember what strawberries taste like"

"I dont remember what food tastes like Sam"

I loved the movie but some of the dialogue between sam and frod was a bit cheesy, lame, and at times homosexual.

Much of that dialogue came straight from the books.

Yes it did...........I think it's because at the time it was written it didnt seem "gay" or homosexual. Culture and society has changed so I think that's why it seems gay to us now.

James 12-25-2003 05:22 PM

the dialogue didn't seem gay at all . . it was the long soulful look eye gazing betwen frodo and sam . . . as well as frodo being in sam's personal speace . . it looked like was going to kiss him:)

LOL!

My friend told me this was gay: I was telling him about the movie and how good it was blah blah and about the one part where Merry gives Pippen some pipeweed before he leaves with Gandalf to go to Gondor, and Pippen keeps asking Merry if he'll see him again .......I almost cried there and my friend told me that was gay.

rainbowbrightCS 12-26-2003 12:39 PM

I don't care if they are gay, the movie was great. I give it a million stars! I just wished they showed what happened to the other people in the fellowship.

I LOVED the movie. Nearly 4 hours of film and it was all great!

I thought that some of the Merry/Pippin scenes were kinda...not homoerotic, but saying 'gay' seems derogatory..but you guys know what I mean anyway. At the end where Pippin finds Merry after the battle I totally expected them to start kissing.

The Frodo/Sam stuff wasn't like that to me simply because that's what I loved in the book- their relationship. The dialogue was pretty much lifted from the book, so I was just really into hearing the actors saying the things I love reading the most.

Favorite line: "I'm glad you're wih me Sam, here at the end of all things"

Edited because typing fast =/= accuracy in speling (haha, get it)

G8Ralphaxi 12-26-2003 03:18 PM

Just saw it last night - Christmas movie night with my brother - and LOVED IT. Although I was definitely like, WTGF?! with Frodo and Sam getting all gushy and gazing soulfully into each other's eyes. That's the director's fault - half the reason those scenes were so weird was the hazy rosy glow over their faces.

And some of the plot changes...my brother re-read the books just a couple weeks ago and he was hopping mad about some of them. Like Frodo betraying Sam and making him leave him in Mordor - he never does that in the book.

Apparently that glass ball - I forgot its name, but it's the one in which Pippin saw Sauron's eye - plays a key role at the last battle. Sauron's eye isn't distracted from Frodo and Sam just because the orcs are getting attacked (do you really think he'd care??!), but because Aragorn uses that glass ball to trick Sauron into thinking that he, Aragorn, has the ring. THAT'S why the eye whips away from Frodo.

Finally, I'd like to add one more happy little comment about Legolas, the Sexy Elf. Yum yum yum. :D

Did I mention my cousin and his fiancee went to the premier in New Zealand?

DeltaBetaBaby 01-01-2004 05:34 PM

Okay, I will lodge my one complaint here:

When Theoden is about to die, and Eowyn is like "I'm going to save you" and he is like "You already did."

LIFTED DIRECTLY FROM RETURN OF THE JEDI!!!

Apparently Jedi/King are interchangeable.

kafromTN 01-01-2004 05:55 PM

Well I guess no one noticed the orc leading the troops to take Minas Tirith looked like Sloth from the Goonies?

Peter Jackson took some liberties with some of the dialog and such to pay homage to some of films he enjyed, such as Return of the Jedi he freely admitted this in some of his interviews.

mmmmmm....my whole motivation for seeing this movie while it was in theaters was to see some more Legolas :D :D :D

Lady Pi Phi 01-01-2004 09:33 PM

I too love Legolas!!! :D

I went to see the movie this afternoon. I loved it!!!

I even loved the cheesy dialogue at the end which so many of you (mostly men...) thought was gay! I am a sucker for a happy ending.

On a side note...why do so many men find it so difficult to have platonic love for another man?

Hahaha, I love that movie! I didn't pick up on that, but I thought he looked like the Elephant man.

I saw it again for the 3rd time over the holiday. I am trying to decide if it is as good as the Two Towers... I think the Extended Two Towers is better, we will see whern the RotK EE comes out... Opinions?

Oh I can't wait for RotK EE, that is going to be so cool. I am hoping it will be out by next Christmass....

Extended Two Towers was a great movie- stronger than Fellowship IMO.

Things I would like to see in ROTK EE:
more about Denethor's madness
more of Pippin in Gondor
more Faramir/Eowyn (since in the book they end up together)

If I get those things I think I'll be able to say it's stronger than Two Towers EE.

butterfly2001nc 01-02-2004 03:37 PM

i can't wait until they come out with the box set! Hopefully, by nov/dec of next year! what a great x-mas gift! :)

breathesgelatin 01-02-2004 03:40 PM

I ditto lovelyivy84 on all the things I want to see on the EE!

Lady Pi Phi 01-02-2004 07:03 PM

I went to see it again today. I love this movie!

P.S I LOVE Orlando Bloom!

PhiPsiRuss 01-03-2004 10:16 PM

Deserves 1,000 Oscars

I saw it for the second time today. It is simply amazing, and I can't wait for the EE DVD to come out.

My favorite quote from the movie is from Gimli, and I hope that I get it right, "Certain death, little chance of success, what are we waiting for?"

I wasn't exactly looking for it, but after reading about the alleged homoeroticism between Frodo and Sam, I was ready to spot it. Sorry, but nothing really struck me as homoerotic. Then again, I'm not an expert on homoeroticism.

My pet peeves with the movie are that it was too short. Besides the way that they shortened the movie by at least a half hour by leaving the Scouring of the Shire out, they made the battle between the ghosts and Mordor's armies way too short, and too Disney-esque. Also, the battle outside the Black Gates was too short.

And I love Miranda Otto.

Munchkin03 01-03-2004 10:56 PM

I saw it today, too. The only thing I saw between Sam and Frodo was platonic love. Too bad that is viewed by some as homoeroticism.

hahahaha...I watched it yesterday and that's the word that came to mind..."homoerotic" ;)

but all in all, I think it was a good movie.

MeLikey 01-05-2004 01:46 AM

Finally saw it today-- it was great. Only thing I don't really care for in the trilogies are Liv Tyler's scenes... they're all so slow moving and boring, but then again I've never read the book so I don't know. And I made it without getting up to go to the bathroom, there was a little while when I was like hmm, maybe I should go now before the war starts, my friend got up to go, she said she was dying the first 45 minutes because she had to go, I think she finally gave in and went after like 2 1/2 hours.

Kristin AGD 01-05-2004 04:32 AM

Finally saw it! Just got back. I really liked it. And reading this thread is funny because my sister thinks all the hobbits are gay. I couldn't shut her up during the movie. LOL.

I haven't had a celebrity crush in over 10 years. But I am so in love with Orlando Bloom. I watched Pirates twice this weekend, and then LOTR. It is no wonder... I am in Orlando Bloom overload. :D
