I certainly don't need to go on a diet. I'm probably underweight. But, because I don't like the way that high-carb, starchy foods make me feel, I've worked really hard to cut them out of my diet. I do eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, lean meats, and dairy. I've heard that what I do is not unlike the Atkins.

THANK YOU :)

Some people do use Atkins as a "quick fix" - eat low-carb for a few weeks, drop ten pounds, and go right back to the sugary snacks. They don't understand that it has to be a way of life if it's going to work long-term. And so, many Atkins dieters who are in it for the long haul get a bad name by association.

It's the same with any eating plan - low-fat, low-calorie, or low-carb. You have to be in it for the long haul; you have to be prepared to make permanent changes to the way you eat, otherwise as soon as you go back to your old ways of eating, the pounds will come back, probably with some friends.

Heck, it's even the same with these fad diets, although I think you'd get bored pretty quick if you could only eat cabbage soup for the rest of your life :p

WATCH OUT!!!

All I have to say is that if you are on atkins, WATCH OUT FOR THOSE CARBOLITE products!!! I had a bag of jelly beans and two peanut butter cups and when I went to work out today, my stomach and back starting spasming and I felt like I was going to die. I barely made it home. so BE CAREFUL of how much you eat. Even if you are under your carb limit, you can still get REALLY REALLY SICK!!!!!

I've heard that about the hershey sugar free chocolate too.

I would rather just have the chocolate, lol (but then again I am not on Atkins- I'm sure some people can have it OCCASIONALLY but not everyone can)

PhiPsiRuss 12-09-2003 11:50 PM

As far as sugar-free sweets go, the way it is sweetened is important.

If it is sweetened with sugar alcohol (like Hershey's), eat very little or your stomache will make you hate life.

If it is sweetened with Maltitol (a natural sweetener with low impact on blood/sugar levels), your stomache will like you much better.

If it is sweetened with an artificial sweetner, your stomache will be fine. The preferred artificial sweetnert is Splenda. Splenda is made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar. Also, it has zero carbs, and it is not a carcinogen.

Munchkin03 12-09-2003 11:55 PM

Sorbitol is another artificial sweetener that can wreak havoc on your tummy.

Has anyone tried the new Ocean Spray drinks with splenda???

I had it the other day and it was AWFUL! Far more sweet than the original drinks, and a worse aftertaste than nutrasweet!

40 calories/glass and drastically fewer carbs is great and all, but I think I'll stick to water...

I did, and I agree. Ocean Spray screwed up.

I've had other things with Spenda that stated much better. I actually have Splenda packets for tea and coffee in my home, and I think that it does taste better than nutrasweet.

Atkins Diet May Help Kids With Epilepsy

TUESDAY, Dec. 9 (HealthDayNews) -- The popular low-carbohydrate Atkins diet may help children with epilepsy avoid seizures, say researchers at Johns Hopkins Children's Center.

Congratulations on your weight loss, Russell.

I was on Atkins earlier this year and lost 12 pounds. I no longer religiously follow the diet, but I still try to eat lower carbs. I didn't gain any weight. In fact I continued to lose. :)

I did research it. I was gung-ho Atkins for a month or so. I lost weight very quickly; about 10 lbs in a week and then it got slower. When I left induction and added more carbs into my diet, the weight packed back on as fast as it came off.

You do have to be willing to live low-carb for life; not induction low, but pretty damn close. I was up to maybe 30g carbs a day when the weight came back as fast as it went away.

Right now, I eat whatever I want, just in small portions. I've lost 15 lbs and the weight continues to fall off.

I haven't read this whole thread but I am assuming that you think Atkins is a bad diet.

I'm not saying it is or it isn't but I think diets work differently for different people.
My godmother was on atkins and she lost a ton of weight. She is still losing. This low carb diet worked for her.
On the other hand my dad went on a strictly vegan diet and he lost a ton of weight even though practically all he was eating was carbs.

I think the best thing for any diet or weightloss regime is that the weight doesn't come off too quickly.

krazy 12-12-2003 12:16 PM

I'll tell you what the best diet is... One that you can keep yourself on, remain happy, and get proper nutritional properties. The "new" Atkins seems to be a lot better. It hosts Whole Grains, fruits/veggies, etc. This works. I am against eating a bunch of white bread also, I think it is bad to overindulge in anything. I just think there are a lot of people mis-understanding what the Atkins is all about, therefore not receiving their proper nutritional requirements. If you are getting a balanced diet, getting the nutritional requirements you need, and living a life that you enjoy, then rock and roll, get some exercise and you are cool. Moderation is key, do not eat too many carbs, do not eat too many meats, do not drink too many sodas, do not eat to many apples. ANything in excess is unhealthy, One or two will not hurt, in fact, they are healthy. Be moderate, be smart, be happy, and be healthy. All 4 are important. I have done some recent research into the Atkins, nad it apppears, as I said above, that the revamped version is much healthier. Stay natural, stay moderate. If the new Atkins is your deal, rock on, but make sure you understand it. You cannot just sit around and eat sausage sticks and drink half & half. That is suicide. It sounds like russellwarshay knows his stuff, am I making sense russ?

Yes you are. Its also important to remember that no diet works well for everyone. And I'm now down to 189 pounds.

What a huge change from the days when you were POSITIVE that all Atkins eaters were OCD.

My, my.

Well, that is before I had researched the diet in a more professional manner. Thank you for pointing out my ignorance;)

Hey, aren't we allowed to open our minds?

absolutuscchick 12-17-2003 03:53 AM

just out of curiosity - how many of you on the atkins diet are losing lean muscle as opposed to fat?

I don't know if I'm losing lean muscle, at least its not apparent to me. I do know that I am losing a lot of fat, particularly intra-abdominal fat, which is the type of fat most closely linked to cancer.

lovelyivy84 12-23-2003 03:09 PM

If the dieter is eating a sufficient amount of protein and working out with weights regularly muscle loss should be minimal. There's a better chance of retaining muscle on Atkins than on other "diets" for this reason.

If anyone kept accurate body fat % measurements while on Atkins that would be helpful.

PhiPsiRuss 01-17-2004 01:13 PM

179!

I'm down to 179 pounds! I was at 216 when I started at the end of September.

Atkins Advises Dieters to Eat Smaller Steaks

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Promoters of the popular low-carbohydrate, high-fat Atkins diet are saying that people should limit their intake of saturated fat by cutting back on Atkins staples such as meat, cheese and butter, The New York Times reported on Sunday.

Responding to criticism from scientists that Atkins could lead to heart disease and other health problems, the director of research and education for Atkins Nutritionals, Colette Heimowitz, is telling health professionals that only 20 percent of a dieter's calories should come from saturated fat, the paper said.

Beef, pork, lamb and butter were on the list of "foods you may eat liberally" in diet founder Dr. Robert C. Atkins' book "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution," first published in 1992. Atkins, who died last year, always maintained that people should eat other food besides red meat, but had trouble getting that message out, the paper said.
