True. This is how I joined.

Grad student may pledge, or they can be made advisors. Chapter may also limit the involvement of graduate students. By that, I assume they could bar them from holding office. (one university I was at did that to an extent. They viewed all clubs as 'undergraduate clubs' and put limits on grad student so they wouldn't 'take over' the clubs).

As others have pointed out, this means those who pledge as undergraduates could remain active as grads. And many do.

Re: Depends on the school,

I totally agree! I founded a Beta Sigma Phi chapter as a second year graduate student. I really needed the support and community involvement that a sisterhood provides. Now that I have graduated and moved away, I still go to my fellow founding sister with the ups and downs in my life.

if you graduated and then decided to get a second degree some schools call you undergrads, some call you something else. I looked into this when i graduated with my first degree and then wanted to get my 2nd degree (various reasons involved as to why i did not just do both at the same time). Anyway, it all depends on the school which classification someone falls in, but as far as the Federal student aid form, one who is seeking a second degree is still considered an undergraduate.

On another not,

Are there sororities who allow graduate students who were initiated as undergrads to coninue to be active members as graduate students? I thought that i had heard this before on here.

Just my thought, when i was in graduate school it was so hard to meet people and it was very lonely. I found grad school to be easier than undergrad cause all my classes were in my feild that i have studied in a long time. Anyway, i really missed my sorority and wished that there was a place that i could go to like my sorority for friendship, ect. The graduate student associate was not very sociable and i really wanted the friendships i had at my undergraduate chapter. I really don't see anything wrong with grad students being in chapters. I think that the support system one finds in their house would become more important. But that could just be my opinion.

The DU chapter may well have been all grad students during that period, but if so, it wasn't because undergrads couldn't pledge...my father pledged his fraternity there as a freshman in 1957. His was one of a number of nationals thriving there at the time, quite above-ground, with large houses and everything.

Phi Kappa Psi only has 3 forms of membersip:
Pledge
Undergraduate
Alumnus

We say that, if you are in school (any type of school) where there is a Chapter, and you want to join, you can.

What's funny about that is, if you joined at, say, Georgia when you were a freshman, spent your time there and graduated and went to law school at Northwestern, you have a choice as to your status - you can become an alumnus or you can transfer your membership and join the undergraduate chapter.

Along with this, if you leave school or transfer to a school where there is no active chapter, you are considered an alumnus member of the fraternity

Ok, years later, this makes me laugh after all the "controversy" lately...:D

I don't think that that is the case, so much, anymore.
Basically, you'd better be pretty awesome, like an astronaut or something, and someone who wants to get theirs hands-on with a chapter. And self-recommending is not a good way to go.

Isn't is actually true, that in most NIC and NPC do not take Grad Students?

Not to start a wee weeing contest, there is a difference between Social, and other Special Groups who use Greek Letters.

The Divine 9 also have their own structure so they do theirs differently.

Then, how long a go was this post started?;)

My sister Betas have already weighed in on this, but we accept members regardless of collegiate standing. I'm an alumna of 24 years and enjoy my active status in BSP.

From what I understand, Beta Sigma Phi is not a collegiate-based sorority, and is not an NPC group. We have 3 Beta Sigma Phi chapters in my town, and the only college we're near is a junior college. And the chapter members tend to be in their 30s and up...WAY up.
