juliebug 09-06-2003 12:40 PM

I dont have much time to post, nor am i going to post all the details from the last 2 nights...

Everything went great... i loved all of the sororities except for one... but unforunately i got only ONE invitation back for tonights party and it was from DG. I liked DG, they were awesome, but they just werent for me and i hate that b/c they liked me at least enough to bring me back tonight. Plus i have decided to quit the whole process. I need to call my RC a little later and tell her that i wont be coming back. I would rather quit than be fired... if you think of it that way. I was told that my GPA wasnt high enough... and if i knew that it had to be a 3.2 for upperclassmen, then i wouldnt have gone through with rush at all. I was only like 4 points away from a 3.2.

I appreciate everyones support, guidance, and positive attitudes...

*hugs*

http://superbabies.homestead.com/files/pftroest.gif Sorry hon! http://superbabies.homestead.com/files/pftroest.gif

There is always COB and the way I did it, AI! AI rocks! We have had many success stories :D

Hope ya hang with us!

juliebug 09-06-2003 01:01 PM

thanks jill... i was thinking about COB... but we will see what happens.

Lil_ChiO_Lady 09-06-2003 01:02 PM

That stinks

Juliebug,
I'm sorry that you were cut so harshly...but are you absolutley sure that DG isn't the one for you?

I do agree that they should have made you aware about the GPA requirements that apply for upperclassmen. At UH we don't have certain requirments for upperclassmen,it is the same as any other freshmen and so on.

Again I am sorry but what about COBing? Have you ever considered it?Well, I hope everything works out in whatever decision you make.:)

Yes Juile I would like to echo this! Of course I am a little bias but I would give DG another chance. Even if it wasn't DG many girls will tell you that they felt uncertain about a group and kept going to more parties or pref and they fell in love! Doing a 180 is pretty common in rush! Good luck sweetie!

polarpi 09-06-2003 02:55 PM

Julie,
I'm so sorry to hear about what happened during your recruitment experience. They definitely should have told you about the different GPA requirments for upperclassmen (it seems like that's a punishment for being an older student!) because it's not something that most people are going to think about when considering going through recruitment. Definitely keep all options open, and we're all proud of you for going through the process....please stick around and let us know what all is happening! :)

juliebug 09-06-2003 03:25 PM

yall girls are wonderful...

i actually decided to go ahead and go to the party tonight... if they decided to cut me before pref night, then thats ok. It took me awhile to come up with this decision b/c i was so upset... i cried and thought and cried and talked with my husband and cried and thought.

The one sorority witht he panhellenic GPA rules for upperclassmen was ADPi, and they were my first choice.

I guess we will see how everything goes tonight.

LeslieAGD 09-06-2003 03:39 PM

Julie, I am so glad to hear that you've chosen to attend the party tonight. Best of Luck! I hope you enjoy yourself and can see a different side of the sisterhood! :)

Aphigurl 09-06-2003 03:56 PM

Julie,

Good Luck and have fun at the party tonight.:)

AXO_MOM_3 09-06-2003 04:19 PM

Good luck!!:D

Cluey 09-06-2003 04:42 PM

One of my friends from college had a DG friend at Montevallo. I never heard anything but great things about them! I hope you have fun tonight!

I'm so glad that you are still considering Delta Gamma. DG is a fabulous organization. After all, who wouldn't want a Hannah??:)

But now I'm confused. If the panhellenic GPA rules for upperclassmen is a 3.2, then shouldn't ALL of the sororities have to abide by that? Or is ADPi the only sorority with that high of academic standards for upperclassmen?

(Btw, I wouldn't have made the 3.2 cut, either - that seems awfully high to me...!)

Anybody from UofMont want to clarify this?

absolutuscchick 09-06-2003 07:54 PM

Good for you for deciding to check out Delta Gamma. Keep us posted!!!

I am so glad you decided to go back and give DG a try - I hope everything works out for you!

Julie....

Julie, hi there. I am an "older" (lol--and trying to be wise here) sorority woman, first starting with an NPC organization in college and then being invited to become a Beta Sigma Phi after marriage and having a family.

I was saddened to read that you were going to drop from rush and I was also sad to hear that you were given the run around because of grades. Before reading all the posts in this thread, I was going to write and encourage you to at least hang in and give rush a try, even though you felt that maybe that chapter that extended you an invitation "wasn't for you".

I am glad that you are going to continue with rush. Believe me, things have changed (for the better it seems) when it comes to rush, or I should get with the times and say "recruitment". You sound very dedicated and committed to pledging yourself to the Greek System and that is certainly something that no matter which badge you wear is an attribute to GLO's everywhere.

Best wishes--I will be thinking of you!:)

I wish i could clarify for you, but this is just what my good friend Stacey said. I guess it is just ADPi, b/c DG and i think some others dont have certain GPA requirments for ucm.

Tonight went well... DG was very nice and their theme was DG in the City. I really enjoyed it, but they still arent my first choice... I just felt great with ADPi, and ill still put them down as my first choice on pref night and DG as my second... that is if i make it to pref night. Im actually expecting a call tonight telling me that im released. I guess we will see.

Today has been so very emotional for me. Steph. my friends sister who is in ADPi told me tonight that Stacy fought and fought for me not to get cut last night, and cried and cried for me (then i started crying in front of everyone tonight - how embarrassing). I just get teary-eyed thinking about that. Stacey is such a great friend to me and i really wish we could be sisters. Steph told me that they took someone with a 2.9 GPA, but they wouldnt take me and i have a 2.6 or 2.7 something like that. They just said it was too low :( Steph also told me that Stacey said she would do anything to get me in ADPi and that i should go to the open house party this Wednesday... my only worry is DG extending me a bid, which is good, dont get me wrong... but if i really have a chance to be an ADPi then i would love to take it. A small part of me actually wants to be dropped totally... i feel like if i cant be an ADPi, then i dont want to be anything.

I'm so confused

mmcat 09-06-2003 11:19 PM

lots of words fly during recruitment....
you've got to figure out your plan.
you know there's a slew of folks here who are cheering for you.
i would say keep your possibilities open, but ultimately it's yours, my friend to choose.
good luck.

mmcat 09-06-2003 11:23 PM

duplication...sorry.

I'm going to be Panhellenic and shut up, but it looks as though you need a hug... http://superbabies.homestead.com/files/hugs2.gif

juliebug 09-06-2003 11:37 PM

thanks guys... *hugs*

i am just pretty emotional right now... as i told someone else... i have been making spure of the moment decisions that i will think about and change my mind, etc...

i just need sleep and food...

goodnight!

pinkyphimu 09-06-2003 11:42 PM

julie,
i am a little worried for you! first of all, (and this is no offense to your friends), but they never should have told you what happened during membership selection. the part about needing a 3.2 is ok, but the rest pretty much scares me.

when i was a sophomore, a friend of mine who was a year older went through cob for our chapter. she had probably about 6 or 7 very good friends in our chapter (which is pretty good since our chapter was about 20 something women), but did not get a bid. the following fall, she went through rush and was not extended a bid again. now, i KNOW why this happened, but never in a million years would i (or any of her other friends) tell her why. after she found out she didn't get a bid, we apologized and told her that we were sorry it didn't work out, but that we were still her friends and still cared about her. i know it is hard to want someone in your glo and for whatever reason, it doesn't happen.

please keep dg in mind. i know that it may not be your first choice right now, but open your mind to them because you don't know what you will find. i also caution you about dropping out to pursue cob with another org because the fact that someone told you to do that is a rush infraction. i really don't know if this group will have space available after recruitment and if your gpa is lower than what they are looking for, then that would probably still be a factor in cob. you don't want to miss an opportunity with dg.

Jill1228 09-07-2003 12:00 AM

Glad you are giving DG a chance! There are some hard core DGs on here! I am dying to hear how things went (just got home)

If I didn't have to work today I would have gotten your number and called you!

I went to high school in Germany with a young lady that was a DG at the University of Montevallo in the early 90s. Her younger sister pledged in the mid 90's and was a cheerleader for the University of Montevallo.. and then in the late 90's their little sister pledged!!!! So the family has three University of Montevallo, Delta Gamma alumnae!!!! I no nothing about the chapter, but Wendy was very involved in high school and her younger sister was the only freshman on our varsity squad my senior year, she was a doll! Their youngest sister, was in elementary... WOW, I feel old!

Good luck!!

JohnsDGsweethrt 09-07-2003 04:41 AM

We are routing for you Juile! Pinkyphimu has some great points and that is something to think about. Nothing is certain with recruitment which can be a good and bad thing. Feel free to pm if you have any other ?s or need help!

juliebug 09-07-2003 12:05 PM

i still really dont understand the whole rush process... even though i might be an upperclassmen with an all right GPA... which was brought down b/c of one class and a college that was horrible. But can they not see (from my records) that i have progressed from semester to semester and realized that i have made all A's and B's since my first semester at UM a year ago? Its just not good enough. B/c last night around 3 i was told i was released. DG dropped me and i dont know why. I was the same when i first met them... maybe i was just borderline. That is ok though b/c i have the chance to COB... by the way... what does that stand for "something" open bid?

Ill keep yall updated.

ZTAngel 09-07-2003 12:16 PM

Sororities cannot see what you made in each of your classes. We don't get copies of your transcript. The only thing that is known is your cummulative GPA. So, unfortunately, a sorority cannot see that one class brought down your GPA and that you've been working hard ever since then.

I guess UM is different b/c when you register for rush they make you get copies of your transcript for all the sororities

Jill1228 09-07-2003 12:27 PM

Julie,
COB=Continuous Open Bidding. Groups that do not make quota do this.

Also there is snap bidding. If you drop out now, you cannot be snap bidded

Do not look at snap bidding as a sympathy bid. That is SO not the case...

Also the other girls in the pledge class do NOT know who was snap bidded :)

ZTAngel 09-07-2003 12:28 PM

Really?

That's so weird. I know most schools just get a copy of the PNM's GPAs from Panhellenic and their class standing. We're not allowed to see their transcripts.

How weird.

VERY good explanation/interpretation of snap bidding! Kudos, Jill!

We never saw transcripts, either - just the GPA.

TriDeltaGal 09-07-2003 05:09 PM

juliebug, I'm sorry about how your rush turned out but I wish you all the best of luck in finding your Greek home. Keeping my fingers crossed for COB or a snap bid but hoping for the best in whatever you decide to do.

Actutally that is not accurate. If you participate in any part of recruitment and the drop out (even just Open House) you are eligible for a snap bid.

However it is very very rare that a women released by all chapters prior to preference would receive a snap bid.
