EEKappa -- My sentiments exactly. I certainly couldn't make a video like that.

veemers -- What you said about how it was lacking in certain areas like philanthropy/events information is true. However, it probably wasn't meant to have those things in it in the first place. It seems to me like it would make a good opening day video, since it has lots of general information about various aspects of Greek life and then about this chapter of Theta specifically. Philanthropy and such would be addressed later on in rush. This is just a feel-good video that shows a lot of sisterhood and fun times that should make rushees want to be a part of that, too.

Then again, this video also might be good to show at pref. Then all those things you brought up, veemers, would have already been talked about, and they would just want to make the PNMs feel all warm-fuzzy about the chapter and their prospective sisters. At that, I think they certainly succeed.

If I were going through rush and saw that video, it would definitely help keep this chapter in my mind for the rest of rush!

33girl -- when you see the big X and the pi chi, just keep watching. The part with the pi chi has been Xed out, happens several times in the video, but then it continues with the picture when it's not showing the pi chi any more.

Why the large X with Pi Chi? Does this happen when a Theta is a rush counselor and is part of the video thus they can't show her?

Edited re grammar

Pi Chi is like a Rho Chi... just different titles. So to answer the second question yes... The video I'm guessing was shown when those people weren't Pi Chi's but then put on the internet when they were... I know with pictures on websites and in the house, you have to cover them up or remove them. These are all my takes on the situation.

I believe in constructive criticism and what was put above was not that. It was harsh and didn't help them improve what you felt was missing. I don't think that the video was meant to be a "catch-all" of what a GLO is, it is more about the Sisterhood. I thought that it was nicely put together and I loved the music. I did find it slow in some parts and it didn't WOW me to the point that I would want to join at that moment... but these are all my thoughts on the subject. Also I am guessing that the video would WOW me if I was going through RUSH and had experienced the whole week.

As we see different strokes for different folks... same reason why we all wear different letters.

UF's sororities all make these videos, and they're all at least this quality, and have been for years. It's pretty intense.

The videos are shown Round 3. So at that point the PNM's have already been to that house twice. Round 1 they get a general intro to the house. Round 2 is a philanthropy round (last I heard, anyway), so they already know all about that too.

Round 3 is the chapters' last chance to make an impact and emotional connection before Prefs. It would be stupid for the video to go on and on about service projects or general events. I guarantee you that the sisters featured on the video included the most outgoing girls in the house, exec members, rush chair, etc. So chances are, most PNM's sitting there will see a sister they already met on that video.

While these videos are playing, the sisters are either sitting next to the PNM's or standing behind or around them. The sororities always put stuff in about the seniors or people who aren't there anymore to get sisters crying. (I was always stationed near the front because I was known for crying "elegantly," in the words of our house mom :D)

Generally, after the video, they sing a sisterhood song or someone reads a poem or something equally sentimental. Then the PNM's are led to the door. It's very emotional.

Theta's video here perfectly accomplishes everything it's supposed to accomplish. Yep, they're beautiful and outgoing girls. Have been that way forever as far as I know. Super nice, too. Gosh, it's just terrible that their video shows that! Give me a break.

Here are links for two Pi Lambda Phi rush videos:

CA Tau, Berkeley
Berkeley PiLam Rush Vid

MA Theta, MITMIT PiLam Rush Vid

The Berkeley one is a bit more fun, the MIT is a bit more serious

I liked both of these videos for the following reasons:

1. They both showed the personality of the brothers. All of them. They kept it real.
2. The editing was simple but well done.
3. They weren't worried about appearing perfect. They worried about appearing as themselves.
4. The second video showed actual annual events.
5. The second video showed people other than brothers talk about their experiences.
6. The first video had fun with the video.
7. The music fit and was cross-faded well.

The main thing I didn't like about the first one was that there was so much cursing. But that's just a personal thing of mine.

And, in an attempt to be constructive with the Kappa Alpha Theta video:

What I liked:
1. It described the benefits of both greek life and joining a sorority in general.
2. It showed an event.
3. It showed IM football, showing that there was more to Kappa Alpha Theta than just Kappa Alpha Theta.
4. It mentioned the diversity of the sisters.
5. It talked about family traditions.
6. It described the skills one could acquire from joining Kappa Alpha Theta.

What I did not like:
1. There were too many photos. The movie was too still. Some of the photos were too busy. Some were too dark. This is a technical criticism.
2. The event that they showed a clip of was not their event. It was them participating in someone else's event.
3. Only one type of girl talked/ was interviewed. There was a mention of diversity, but you did not see it in these people. Also, diversity was only mentioned briefly.
4. The music was poorly cross-faded and selected. Some of the songs did not flow well from one song to the next. Also (and again, this is just a personal thing of mine) one of the songs was Celine Dion. Ew.
5. What does a men's football team have to do with Kappa Alpha Theta?
6. It did not mention the type of girls that are Kappa Alpha Theta's. One had to surmise this from what was seen in the video, which was extremely difficult considering that all we saw were photos and girls sitting there and talking.
7. It gave the impression that Kappa Alpha Theta was all smiles and hugs. If it really is, all the power to them, but I'm sure that the sisters have their difficult moments. What happens during those times?
8. It just didn't feel real to me.

It was probably done by an alum or a friend .. you get what you pay for. But i think it was well meaning.

I didn't like the national kappa sigma recruitment video as opposed to other fraternities that I had seen becasue it seemed to lack a better quality.

ETA: If someone did it for them proffessionally, they could have done a much better job.

For those of you that think thats offensive just think of video/movie production in general, some are better.

SoCalGirl - or anyone else, I found today the One Heart, One Way link no longer works; though it had for me before. The page and domain it was on livesatori.com both bring up a page not found type message for me.
Do you have another link where the video may be viewed by people please?

KSUViolet06 04-08-2004 07:55 PM

This video almost made me cry! We're doing a rush video this fall too, so I'm hoping ours will be that good.

KDAngel 04-08-2004 08:59 PM

:) That video was great! I especially loved the end! We do a video like that every fall as well, but that was really really good! :D

I'd like to see it too if it can be found again!

BobbyTheDon 04-09-2004 03:18 PM

shoot...even I want to join Kappa Alpha Theta.

Adelphean1851 04-10-2004 05:12 AM

I think emotinally it achieved it's goal, but from a production standpoint I defiantely agree about the music, I could crossfade better than that and I only have minimal expirence. Also, I think the video had too many segments that were all similar. But hey, it's college not everyone is a film major and not all groups have a budget for professional videos. My chapter had a powerpoint slide show and ''We are family" on repeat in the cd player and we still got alphas. Of course this was three years ago i'm sure they've evovled by now.

So my take in short? yes it was full of mushy gushy sorority goodness that all we alums can sigh over, but no it won't be winning the academy award for editing anytime soon.

SoCalGirl 04-18-2004 05:41 AM

The link to the SK video is working now!

decadence 04-18-2004 10:56 AM

SoCalGirl - thank you. :)

p.s. I hope it will be okay if I link to it? I think it's a great video!
