It was also reported that Madonna didn't want to be outdone by Missy who wore her personal jewelry to the shoot so Madonna went out and requested over $5 million dollars worth of jewelry for the ad. MTV reported that the chain hanging from her back pocket alone (in the opening shot) was worth over $300,000. During the rest of the segment, Missy had praised Madonna as one of her icons/role models because she set the standard of freedom and doing what she wanted to do musically, which Missy does in her own music. |
Star-couple comedies die laughing
Can't say I am surprised.
From USAToday. Star-couple comedies die laughing By Scott Bowles, USA TODAY Romantic comedies and adventures are Hollywood's closest thing to a sure bet. Unless they star actual couples. Though Gigli starred the hottest Hollywood pair around, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck, it flopped at the box office. The latest flop came during the weekend from the hottest pair on the planet. Horrific reviews and bad buzz had dimmed prospects for Gigli, the comedy starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez, but the film could not reach even lowered expectations. Gigli took in $3.8 million, according to box office firm Nielsen EDI. That's about one-third of analysts' expectations and easily makes the $54 million film the disappointment of the year. It replaces last month's Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas, which opened at $6.9 million and took in $25.3 million. After that film flopped, distributor DreamWorks said it was through making hand-drawn animated films. No such ban on romantic comedies or movies starring Affleck and Lopez is expected from distributor Sony, but studios might want to think twice before casting real-life couples in romances. Although Hollywood couples are a staple of TV news and celebrity magazines, they usually do not sell movie tickets. The biggest stars, including Tom Cruise-Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe-Meg Ryan, find the going rough when they hit the big screen with their squeezes. "In today's media machine, you can see Hollywood couples wherever you look," says Brandon Gray of BoxOfficeMojo.com. "If you can see them on TV or on every magazine cover, why would you want to spend money to see it in a theater?" Gigli's advertising campaign didn't help matters, featuring Ben and J. Lo cooing and ogling each other — just as they do daily in the tabloids. The romantic couples from Hollywood's past, such as Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, were typically seen embracing only in theaters. That sold tickets. "Obviously we're disappointed," Sony's Steve Elzer says. "The filmmakers, stars and studios did everything possible to support the film. We did everything we could do." Raunch, on the other hand, remains a solid performer. American Wedding, the third installment of the American Pie franchise, met most analysts' expectations with $34.3 million, topping the chart. Wedding bumped off Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, which fell 39% for $20.1 million and a total of $69.1 million. Spy Kids was No. 2. Final numbers are due today. |
Eminem wants ex-schoolmate suit dismissed
Eminem wants ex-schoolmate suit dismissed
DETROIT (AP) — Eminem wants a Macomb County judge to dismiss a $1 million lawsuit that a former schoolmate filed against him. The Grammy-winning rapper, born Marshall Mathers III, is scheduled to appear Aug. 18 in Macomb County Circuit Court to ask Judge Deborah Servitto to dismiss the case, The Detroit News reported Monday. An ex-schoolmate of Eminem says the rapper's song "Brain Damge" hurt his reputation. By Kevin Mazur, AP DeAngelo Bailey of Roseville sued Eminem in 2001. He claimed the 30-year-old rapper's song "Brain Damage," which named Bailey as a bully, damaged his reputation and his own ability to launch a music career. Eminem's lawyer, Peter Peacock, filed a motion for dismissal last week, claiming Bailey is trying to cash in on his client's fame. Peacock also said the song is true because Bailey beat up Eminem when they were in the fourth and sixth grades at Roseville's Dort Elementary School. Eminem's mother sued the Roseville school district in 1982, claiming school-day beatings left her son with headaches, nausea and a tendency toward anti-social behavior. The lawsuit was dismissed. |
4-1-1 ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 4, 2003
Guess who? I had a chance to see an R&B legend recently. I was backstage and I saw him holding a young infant. I thought how nice…he must be holding his grandchild. NOT! He was holding his latest child. This R&B legend is over 50 and is very married to a woman his age. The baby’s momma is a younger woman. The R&B legend has a famous son who is also a singer. Sometimes you can get on the “Love Train” one time too many. I know a lot of people may think I’m a “backstabber” for revealing this story, but hey…the truth is bound to come out. (Afrochic's sidenote: Ugh Eddie Levert  ) The “Velvet Teddy Bear” is showing his claws. American Idol winner Ruben Studdard is suing the makers of the popular 205 Jerseys. During his run on the show Ruben would wear the shirts and they became an instant fashion hit. The makers of the Jerseys made 2 million dollars off the shirts and now Ruben wants his cut because he feels he was exploited and used. In a statement Ruben said they capitalized on his success without giving him any money. Gladys Knight dubbed him the “Velvet Bear” but now we know that Ruben is not as soft as people think. Mary J. Blige opens up in the new issue of Honey Magazine. Mary has a new LP coming out later this month and she says her unhappy childhood led to problems with drinking and abusing drugs. Mary says she had low self-esteem, but now her life has changed. Mary is engaged to be married to a record producer. Mary says her man loves her for her and she has never been happier. Jackson family patriarch Joe Jackson recently celebrated his 75th birthday. The Jackson children came together at Michael’s Neverland Ranch to help Papa Joe celebrate, but the party turned out to be a flop. Michael hid from the guests, the Jackson children didn’t mingle with anyone, and too many people showed up. Michael told his dad, “You can invite 400 people…” but 1000 people showed up. Joe was walking around looking lost and confused and they ran out of food. People were standing around hungry, thirsty and mad. A lot of people were walking around eating candy bars. Some of the people who did show up include some former stars of the 80’s Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer and actor Corey Feldman. Ray Charles has been ordered by his doctors to rest. Ray is having a problem with his hip and his tour has been postponed until next month. Singer Jaheim says he wants to start an acting career. The popular crooner who is topping the charts with “Put That Woman First,” says he has been looking at some scripts. Jaheim is currently working on a new LP and he is running his bath accessories company. The company is named Julies Dream after his late mother. Jaheim says after a hard day, his mom would relax in the tub with her favorite bath salts. You can check out his products online at Juliesdream.com |
I thought the Jackson family were Jehovah Witnesses. I know the kids have kind of distanced themselves, but I thought the mother and father still would have had ties to the religion. Obviously not, they celebrated the man's birthday.

Mike Tyson Bankrupt (from Yahoo.com)
According to his attorney, Mike Tyson has filed for bankruptcy in Manhattan.
"As a professional fighter, who relied on others to manage his affairs, he discovered that his debts far exceeded his assets," said Tyson attorney Debra Grassgreen. "Now, he has taken the lead in bringing order to his financial affairs." It has also been reported that Tyson puts part of the blame for his dwindling assets - once estimated at $300 million - on promoter Don King. A $100 million lawsuit is pending against King claiming that Tyson was cheated out of millions of dollars at the hands of the promoter. Also adding to the boxing star's financial woes are legal fees from 1995 to 1997 that have been reported to amount to $9 million and his lavish spending habits which include a reported $410,000 on a birthday party, $65,000 on limousine service, and $8,100 toward the care of his pet tigers. |

Halle Berry Eager To Dig Her Claws Into 'Catwoman'
The upcoming "Catwoman" flick will likely do away with much of the established lore from the DC comic books and the 1992 blockbuster "Batman Returns." And as far as Halle Berry is concerned, that's just purrfect.
Having completed the supernatural mystery "Gothika", Berry is bubbling with excitement to dig her claws into the role made famous by Michelle Pfeiffer and 1960s "Batman" TV actresses Julie Newmar, Lee Meriwether and Eartha Kitt. "I am excited about it," the Oscar-winning actress said recently. "I just finished 'Gothika,' so now my next job is to sort of dive into it and figure out who I will be as Catwoman. And what can I bring to it that all of the other great ladies of the past maybe forgot to bring? And I hope I'll find something." Catwoman first appeared in the "Batman" comics back in 1940 and has since appeared in her own comic titles, as well as various "Batman"-related cartoons, TV shows and movies. A costumed jewel thief with the alter-ego of Selina Kyle, Catwoman has been both a nemesis and love interest for the Batcave-dwelling superhero. The current script for the upcoming flick, which Berry took on after scheduling conflicts caused Ashley Judd ("A Time to Kill") to end her long association with the years-in-development project, reportedly involves a new Catwoman named Patience Price who is granted cat-like powers. Batman is not expected to appear. With a tentative July 2004 release date, "Catwoman" seems likely to be the first of the many in-development Batman projects to actually make it into theaters. The passionate reception a fan film called "Batman: Dead End" — in which the Dark Knight battled the Joker, a "Predator" and "Aliens" from the films of the same names — received at the San Diego Comicon convention this year was evidence that demand still exists for "Batman" movies. Darren Aronofsky ("Requiem for a Dream") has expressed interest in adapting comic auteur Frank Miller's classic "Batman: Year One" for the big screen, though director Christopher Nolan ("Memento") is the latest name that's been attached to the relaunch of the "Batman" franchise (see "Next Batman Movie In Hands of 'Memento' Director"). The once highly profitable series that began with Tim Burton's 1989 "Batman" stalled after fans and critics panned Joel Schumacher's "Batman and Robin," which featured George Clooney in the cape and cowl. A proposed "Batman Vs. Superman" flick was placed on the backburner after Warner Bros. decided to move first on separate flicks starring the iconic characters instead (see "Batman And Superman Have To Wait In Line Behind Greek, Trojan Warriors"). "Catwoman," with visual-effects-supervisor-turned-director Pitof at the helm, is scheduled to begin production at the end of next month. A source close to Berry said that start date could change, as the actress is still recovering from an arm injury she sustained while making "Gothika." —Ryan J. Downey |
I'm not mad at you, Halle. I just hope it's worth seeing.

PRAS LETS LOOSE ON WYCLEF: Ex-Fugee tells all
Pras (Aug. 6, 2003) *In an interview with SOHH.com, Pras, a former member of the Grammy winning group, The Fugees, got some things off his chest regarding the group's possibility of reuniting. Fans have wanted to see The Fugees come together for some time, but the odds of that happening seem to be slim and none. It has long been rumored that the Lauryn/Wyclef affair fueled The Fugees breakup. And even though Wyclef, through his track "Where The Fugees At," has called for the group to reunite, Pras explained why he thinks that the situation seems to be bleak. "I mean anything can happen. Dude came back to repent, wash his sins, you know, be like I was wrong. But I don't see dude doing that. His ego is too big," Pras told the site. The group is still obligated to Columbia records for more albums, but Pras maintains his pessimism saying, "I doubt that they gon' get it." Pras confirms that Lauryn's "Miseducation of Lauryn Hill" was aimed at Wyclef in an attempt to get some things off of her chest about the relationship and where it left her. "She felt like being in this situation with this dude everything she thought she was or thought she knew about herself was really misinformed. It's a deep title man. It's a deep concept, deep album." On another note, Pras has his hands full with projects in the music industry as well as Hollywood. The rapper/actor's second solo LP, "Cold Fire," will drop later this year and he has three movie deals on the table. |

MISSY'S DEMEANOR NOT GOOD WITH MADONNA: Elliott denies disrespecting singer Missy Elliott (Aug. 6, 2003) *Missy Elliott is not happy with the allegations of disrespecting a fellow diva in the industry. Missy was recently accused of snubbing Madonna on the set of their new Gap commercial, reports Launch Radio. There were also rumors that Missy initially snubbed an invitation to Madonna's home for lunch and refused to get out of her limousine on the set after Madonna tapped on the window. Elliott issued a statement to New York Magazine this past Monday, explaining that "she wasn't herself " on the day of the shoot because of a personal crisis. She also stated that Madonna showed sincere concern for her. "Madonna came to me and asked what was wrong, and I told her in a roundabout way," said Elliott. "She called her spiritual adviser over the day of the shoot. He gave me, like, the red string, and he prayed for me. The rest of the shoot was fine. I would never disrespect her." Well, in the words of Gary Coleman, all we have to say is, "Missy, whatchoo really talkin' 'bout?" |

Xzibit
According to Daz...formerly of the Dogg Pound....it is said that Xzbit was recently attacked outside of a restaurant and hit in the face with a bottle, resulting in 87 stitches and the possiblility of losing his rapping career.
Daz has also signed on with So-So Def These are the transcripts of an interview with Daz. The interview was conducted by Hugo on July 28th, 2003. (courtesy of mvremix online) With the So-So Def/Aftermath beef well known - where do you stand? Daz : I stand with So-So Def. I heard about Xzibit bowing down to Suge and whatnot, and Snoop etc.'s problems with that... Daz: No, I'm talkin' about Xzibit got beat up the other day. Nah, I didn't hear about that Daz: Yeah, he was in a restaurant the other day. Some dudes came up to him and were like "Are you Xzibit?" He brushed them off, being like "I ain't got time for this shit." So the dude started pickin' with him. So when he came outside, another dude came up and busted him in the face with a bottle. He got eighty-seven stitches in his mouth. He can't rap no more. That's the news of the week right there. |

'Gigli' Ads to be Scrapped
Wednesday, August 06 NEW YORK, Aug 06, 2003 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- With a dismal turnout for the opening weekend of the Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck film, "Gigli," Sony Pictures will pull its ads. "Gigli" took in slightly more than $3.8 million over the weekend, putting it in eighth place at the box office. One New York TV station executive told the New York Daily News that the studio has asked that commercial time it had bought for "Gigli" be converted to ads for another Sony film, "Bad Boys II." "They're making every effort to pull advertising," another television network executive told the News. Theater chains are obligated to play the movie for two weeks but are expected to turn off the lights after that. For now, "Gigli" will get crammed into the smallest, least desirable theaters in the megaplexes. Copyright 2003 by United Press International. |

Archbishop Don "Magic" Juan
Photo: MTV News "I'm the greatest player who ever played the game." — Archbishop Don "Magic" Juan CHICAGO — He's gone from being a ladies' man to brokering ladies of the night to speaking in front of church congregations. Now, one of the first pimps to pay taxes for his street activity is turning into a recording artist. Yes, Archbishop Don "Magic" Juan is putting out an LP. "We damn sure doing that album!" Snoop Dogg said last month in Cleveland about the project that he and his close friend are putting together. "It's called Game: General Amount of Money Earned. He's gonna talk about his game and a lot of other people are gonna rap on it. A lot of his rap friends that's in the game owe him favors or wanna be down with him." It seems like everyone in the hip-hop community wants to be down with Don Juan. Although the Bishop, who says he's an ordained minister, and is even rumored to have his own church, mostly rolls with Snoop, MCs including 50 Cent, Nelly, Busta Rhymes, Rakim and Ice-T have shown him love in their videos or stage shows. Not to mention the countless number of mic marksmen who have referenced him in their lyrics. "Well, let me see, Snoop heard about my game," the flamboyant Holyman said sitting in a hotel room in his hometown, recalling how he and the Dogg became friends. "He saw me at a concert [and I like] anybody [that's] attracted to what's real so I came backstage. Me and some other players got a chance to kick it with him. The fellowship was good. We saw that we were in different areas, but we were really on the same level. I been there, he's been here. Him being a young player like that, I got a chance to be able to express some of the things that I feel through him, giving him this game. And that's what I do, man. I give our game and I like people to know game ain't just something you go and play. It's all about life." Although the green-and-gold-plaid-wearing, pimp-stick-holding minister appears in the new video for 50 Cent's "P.I.M.P.," he frowns on the current trend in hip-hop where many MCs are claiming to be pimps in their music. "You know, they say a lot of things about pimping, but I want y'all to know something — y'all can just keep that pimpin' out your mouth if you don't have a prostitute on the corner," said Don Juan, whose also sporting glasses shaped like stars. "You're not pimping anything. It ain't the pimp game ... OK?" The Bishop started off in the pimping game almost 30 years ago. Even back then, he says, he had a special connection to the man above. "Well, first I started off as 'Don Juan,' " he said, recounting how his name came about. "You know, 'Don Juan' is known to be a lover so I continued to play as a lover and be successful. Then, the pimp god, he gave me the name 'Magic' because I kept on playing the game so tough when everybody else seemed to be failing and turning another way. I stayed true to the game and he said, 'Well, you oughta be "Magic." ' Then, the Bishop part is when I got saved in 1985. I've just been part of the chuuuuuch movement. So chuuuch." Earlier in the day, the Bishop had been spreading his pimping goodwill throughout the streets of Chi-Town. Dressed in a green polka-dot suit to match his toenail paint, hat, boxer shorts, boots, Eldorado, iced-out pimp cup and diamond-studded sunglasses, he let everyone within earshot know that the day was going to be "official like a referee with a whistle." (Click for photos of Don "Magic" Juan in Chicago.) "This is 'P.I.M.P.' for real!" Don Juan yelled over the sounds of a G-Unit mixtape blasting in his vehicle. "I'm the greatest player who ever played the game," he said before walking into a hotel to meet with peers like Mr. Chicago and Snoop Dogg. The true fanfare, however, would happen in the Archbishop's room, where he and Snoop sang songs and the Magic Man unveiled enough custom-made suits that he could go three weeks without wearing the same outfit. He also had jewelry and personalized turntable covers with spray-painted pictures of himself on them. "I mean, I've got to be dressed from head to toe," he said of his famously conspicuous fashion sense. "I don't do like a lot of other people — get up and put on [my] jeans and gym shoes. I like to be dressed for occasions. You don't know what might be jumpin' off. Somebody might say, 'Let's go to a wedding or let's go perform.' I want to be ready so I don't have to get ready." |

There was an article in our paper on Sunday about how the rap game had turned to pimps, etc. Snoop claimed that Don Juan had helped him to gain self-confidence. He was able to express himself better. The thing about pimps, Don Juan in particular, showed him that he could get money, be stylish, etc. Don Juan also said that anyone can be a pimp, be it man or woman. They must handle their business right and be able to take charge and have the "ho" bring their money to you. They stated that the Hughes Bros. documentary, "American Pimp," and other shows, etc. brought the pimp game into a new light.
My statement: GIVE ME A FREAKIN' BREAK!!! This pimp business is all some bullisht! Don Juan makes my stomach churn and I can't stand the sight of him! He is sickening. With all the pimping stands for, I don't see why people are supporting that. |

Online mag, mentions Latrell Sprewell
From hintmag.com's gossip column, Chic Happens.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Few awards require such dedication to buffoonery as the annual induction into the Chic Happens Hall of Fame. This year's winner, already a legend, showed that even after a career as gossip fodder he's still capable of reaching deep inside and pulling off that one further embarrassment that snatches international headlines. Such is the mettle of a true fashion champion. This year's Hall of Fame trophy—the coveted star-shaped ashtray—goes to Calvin Klein. In March, Klein staggered onto the court in the middle of a New York Knicks basketball game to give star-player Latrell Sprewell advice on a play—or perhaps ask him out. The 60-year-old designer entered rehab, again, two weeks later. The incident even prompted the New York City Council to debate a special "Calvin's Law," which would provide stricter penalties for anyone interrupting sporting events. 4-1-1 ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE WEEK OF AUGUST 11, 2003
The romance is back on with Brandy and Tyreese. Can you say what husband? Brandy used to date Tyreese before she got married and had a baby and now she and Tyreese are back together-- hot and heavy. What’s going on with the romance between Chili and Usher? I hear there is trouble in paradise because Chili who is 34 is ready to get married. Usher is 24 and he says he is not ready. The trouble started at the BET Awards where the two had a very public fight and there was also an incident at a Target Store in Atlanta. It’s another boy for Sixers superstar, Allen Iverson, and his wife Tawanna. The Iverson’s welcomed Isaiah last week. Sometimes your hair can be too big. Diana Ross was not hurt but her hair did catch fire at a Los Angeles restaurant. Diana was hanging out with friends when her hair hit a lighted candle on a wall. Her friends quickly put the fire out. Remember singer Betty Wright? Back in the day she had the hits “Clean Up Woman” and “Tonight Is The Night.” Well, Betty is now an ordained minister and she is back with a new song called “U-R-A-HO And You Don’t Know.” Oprah Winfrey is coming out with a new magazine. O At Home will be published twice a year. Oprah says she has always wanted to come out with a home design magazine. Actor Terrance Howard has joined the cast of the Showtime series Street Time. Erika Alexander who starred as “Max” on the show Living Single also stars. The show airs on Showtime Wednesday nights at 10pm. Terrance has added his middle name to his professional name. Terrance Dashon Howard. Terrance is best known for his role as the “Playboy” in the movie The Best Man. Don’t look for The Fugees to get back together. Back in the 90’s, Wyclef Jean, Lauryn Hill and Pras topped the charts and ruled the music world but now the trio is not on speaking terms. Wyclef broke Lauryn’s heart with their affair and Pras and Wyclef had a falling out. In a recent interview Pras dissed Wyclef saying he remembers when Wyclef used to wear a Jheri Curl when he worked in a beauty store. Beyonce’ says even though she is topping the charts with her CD Dangerously In Love, she is returning to Destiny’s Child. Beyonce’ says she will always be a part of the group and she also said her sister Solange will not be joining the group. Michael Jackson’s daughter, Paris, is doing better. Paris recently fell at the Neverland Ranch and broke her nose. Brian McKnight and Javier will be joining saxophonist Dave Koz on his new LP, Saxophonic. Ray Charles is having problems with his hip and he has cancelled his world tour. Mariah Carey a “Bond Girl?” She recently met with producers about appearing in the 21st Bond film. Rapper/actor Bow Wow is going to be the new spokesperson for Campbell’s Soup. He will be starring in their new TV ads. The music group Full Force is back. Full Force is known for the hit song “Alive” and the House Party movies. Full Force is now making movies. The group will be starring in, writing, directing and producing the movie Bouncers. Full Force is also known for their songwriting. They wrote hit songs for the The Backstreet Boys, Brittney Spears, N’SYNC, Lisa Lisa and James Brown. Russell Simmons’ wife, Kimora Lee Simmons, is in negotiations to do a talk show. It would be like the popular ABC show The View. Kimora would host with Jules Asner from the E Network. Rapper Ice T is coming out with his own malt liquor brand. Royal Ice should be out this fall. Ice currently co-stars on the NBC show Law and Order SUV. What’s going on between Maxwell and Oscar Winner actress Nicole Kidman? The two are friends and they hang out together in New York. Sources say one night while he was waiting for her, he was serenading hotel guests in the lobby. Where is Jill Scott? The popular singer is hard at work on a new LP, but in the meantime she is headed for the small screen. Jill will be co-starring in the Showtime movie Cave Dwellers with Kyra Sedgewick. |
