Okay, here's my major concern for rush week this fall: I go to the U of A- in TUCSON. Its in the middle of August, its gonna be over a hundred degrees outside. All the PNMs-including myself-are gonna melt away. I know you should give a good first impression, but how is that possible when you are dripping with sweat??? lol..... I just hope the first two days of open house go well. The heat is gonna be a huge problem!!

I feel the same way! My face gets really red also and I wanna look cute, too......I just hope the heat isn't really bad. With my luck, it'll rain lol....

trisigmaAtl 07-27-2003 04:01 PM

I was just talking to my Rush chair today about what we're going to wear and I'm soooo excited. we're going to be uniform for the first round for the first time in FOREVER. she's soooo awesome anyway, this is our run down (it'll probably be tweaked and specified later):

round one: nice, fitted v-neck light purple t-shirts that read "Sigma Sigma Sigma" in small script on the chest with khaki pants or a khaki skirt...I don't think we've thought about shoes yet...

round two (philanthropy): we'll be on the floor working with a craft so we'll probably be in jeans any ideas on a uniform top that's not too exspensive or another t-shirt?

round three: individual badge wear (we don't want to be uniform every night) costumes for those in the skit

round four: ummmmm BLACK DRESSES AND SHOES (could anyone have guessed.

I'll update and edit as plans get nailed down, have I mentioned that I love rush lately? cuz I do I really freaking do!

No worries. All you need to do is dress for the heat. Remember to wear sunblock (very important) and comfy shoes. Most of the time you're inside the nice climate controlled chapter houses with women offering you water every five seconds. And also remember that 700 other women are going through the same thing as you, so you're not gonna be the only girl who is feeling a bit toasty.

Maybe get a polo shirt? I know my old chapter is ordering polos for a "matching" outfit that's a little nicer, and they're getting them from a company that's really flexible so you can order fitted, loose, open placket, etc...

AZpinkkittie 07-28-2003 10:55 AM

I'm fearing the AZ heat as well. Thankfully, I have pretty casual outfits planned for the first 3 rounds (skirts and tees) so I won't be too uncomfortable.
Quick question for AXWhoa, and I think UASoph02 might want to know the answer as well, are the pictures of suggested outfits in the greek mailer we all got what you would consider honest? The girls are wearing pretty casual stuff, not super trendy like I would imagine everyone would wear, and that we've discussed here on the boards. They all look nice, it's just not what I would picture with all the ideas I've gotten from everyone on GC. Just want to get an opinion of someone who knows and would be honest. PM if you want.

UASoph02 07-28-2003 11:41 AM

Yeah, I would kind of like an answer also. According to the mailer, jeans and a t shirt are okay for the first two days. I didn't exactly think that would be appropriate since you want to give a good first impression-not that there is anything wrong with jeans and a t shirt......

chloe173 07-28-2003 02:17 PM

USC said the same thing about first round being casual, jeans would be ok. I assume that since UofA and USC are both competitive rush PAC-10 schools it would be about the same.

And at USC-jeans are NOT ok.

However, the first round was almost entirely jean and khaki skirts with nice fitted, classy shirts. I would say-think what you might wear to lunch with friends at a nice but trendy restaurant. 2nd and 3rd rounds were cute, classy, fun sundresses, and pref was a black coctail dress.

Hope this helps.

33girl 07-28-2003 02:29 PM

What the hayulll??

I am assuming that current sorority members and the Greek advisor create these fliers and such saying what to wear. Why on earth would they say that jeans are fine when they aren't? I just don't get why they would want to give rushees misinformation.

It's all so lame - for cryin out loud, admit that what you wear matters and can be a factor in where/if you get a bid (if that's the case at your school). It's like NPC is trying to keep up this facade of what's on the inside is all that matters when that just isn't true - in rush or in life. No you don't have to be a natural beauty - but the way you present yourself is something you can control.

AOII_LB93 07-28-2003 02:36 PM

Have any of you AZ ladies(or those in hot climates) thought about maybe bringing a parasol/umbrella with you? Not the kind for when it rains, but maybe one of those small japanese paper kind(reminiscent of the ones that you stick in drinks, but larger?) It may seem odd, but I've seen people do it at outdoor functions like games, polo matches, and stuff...just a thought...as a matter of fact they suggested those on Martha Stewart today because they did an outdoor wedding in Puerto Rico at 3pm.

May seem a bit silly, but shade is great. :)

AXWhoah 08-03-2003 12:38 AM

Honestly ladies, jeans are fine. But i wouldn't wear them simply for the reason that it's gonna be hotter than hell and I wouldn't wear long pants of any kind. The first day of my recruitment I wore jean cutoffs and a tank top with sneakers. Okay well I felt a little under dressed but I got asked back to all of my first choices from that day so it didn't hurt me at all. But what I would tell you is to dress in what you feel comfortable because remember you want to show who you are, we only get 20 minutes to meet you that first day so your style shows a lot about you.

Glitter650 08-03-2003 03:06 AM

WOW !! I can't believe that KSU has a 260 dollar fee to go through recruitment !! that seems VERY high to me... of course this is coming from someone where rush is free... but I know of schools around (Berkely, Stanford) with bigger systems than mine and even the late application fee is only like 50 dollars...

chloe173 08-03-2003 04:16 AM

USC has a fee of like 60 dollars...but 260? That's nuts! After buying all my clothes, jewelry, shoes, hair app, nails, tanning--how could most PNM's afford that? Does it even get them a t-shirt or anything? I would want some of my first month dues to come out of that chunk of change!

sherbertlemons 08-03-2003 12:05 PM

Our recruitment outffits are so cute!

1st round (Spirit Day)- A UCF t-shirt with black pants and black shoes.
2nd round (Philanthropy Day)- Khakis, white tennis shoes, and a white polo with a blue fleur-de-lis for a logo.
3rd round (Movie Day)- Black pants, black shoes, and a white, light blue, or dark blue oxford shirt.
4th round (Prefs) - A black and white dress, our keys, and dresy shoes.

DGMarie 08-03-2003 01:04 PM

it appears rush is before the star of school so the $260 applies to lodging during rush as well.

alphagambaby 08-03-2003 01:41 PM

I love this thread! It's fun to read about what others are wearing (and to discover that we're all wearing basically the exact same thing!).

Round 1: red, buff, or green letter shirts (the amount of each is split up among the chapter so we don't have 20 red and 2 green or something like that), khaki pants, brown sandals, brown belt

Round 2: the girls in the skit are wearing all sorts of costumes, the ones who aren't are wearing black pants, white shirts, and everyone wears black closed-toe shoes

Round 3: last year we started doing the red dress for pref thing, and although we all thought it would be a terrible idea and would look tacky, it actually looks really really good and it makes us stand out from the other groups a little bit- red dresses, red or black closed-toe shoes, badges, and pearls if you have them

Bid Day: jeans and our bid day shirts which are yellow w/ black writing and say something along the lines of "Come BEE an Alpha Gam with me" (I know that's not right, but I can't think of what it actually says) and it's got little bumblebees all over it- so cute! and one of my sisters designed it, which makes it even more special!

-Abby

erin34 08-03-2003 02:21 PM

Yes, regarding K-State rush, I will be rushing there next week! I can't believe its almost here! Anyway, the 260 fee includes all meals and lodging, since we live in temporary residence halls that week. And no, it doesn't give us a free t-shirt, if we want a recruitment shirt we have to buy it for 10 bucks. I guess I just never realized that it was that high since everything is included for that week.

Glitter650 08-03-2003 02:52 PM

Well I'm glad to hear you're getting something for all of that money !! I figured it had to be something like that which made the cost so high... it's just I've never heard of a school charging that much.. so I had to ask... :D GOOD LUCK Erin have fun !! If you meet a blonde girl named Meghan at Kappa tell her that the drama girl from last summer at camp pontiac says hello !

erin34 08-03-2003 03:23 PM

Thanks!! I hope I get all the way to bid day. I really appreciate your kind words!! And, if I find a blonde named Megan at Kappa, I'll be sure to say hello :-)

UGAnchora 08-03-2003 07:05 PM

I have a dumb old-lady small school question. :) How do you know in advance how many t-shirts to get for the new girls? I assume it's a bit more complicated than running over to the bookstore and screen-printing them up the afternoon of bid day. :)

You order the amount expected (from quota) and if you don't make quota, then you may give them to the actives or to the girls you get through COB. I think, correct me anybody if I'm wrong.

Glitter650 04-22-2004 03:16 AM

That's what we do order the chapter plus quote from the year before and if we end up with too many we sell them at founders day or E-board training... anytime we see ladies from other chapters (they usually bring shirts as well)

PiPhiGirl2005 04-22-2004 11:59 AM

For Formal Recruitment:

Day One (Saturday) - Open Houses: Our recruitment chair just changed the house 'uniform' that we've had for several years and I'm really excited. It has always been a wine colored top and gray bottoms, but that was getting out of hand - it seems nobody really knows what the color 'wine' is really supposed to be! Anyway, the new outfit is - white, long sleeve, collared button-down shirt; black dress pants (no cargo pockets, may have a cuff), and black close-toed shoes. In addition, we are provided with a wine or blue scarf to wear as a little belt thing. Although this isn't usually my style, I think it's going to be way cute. :)

Day Two (Sunday) - Skit Day: Everyone wears their shirt from Fall pick-up with jeans. It's a tee shirt, so it's cold in January, but we suck it up. This past year, for example, pick-up was in September and our shirts had the Pepsi logo on them, but said "Pi Phi" instead. Everyone was in the skit, so we all changed eventually, but when welcoming the girls and escorting them out, we all looked unified.

Day Three (Monday) - Formal Desserts: Black dress. Period. With nude colored nylons and shoes that match your dress. And our pins. :) I think our recruitment chair is going to be a little more "regulatory" about this, because people have gotten slackedy in the past year - wearing navy or gray, having stripes on their dress, etc.

Day Three (Tuesday) - Pref. Parties: Also black dresses, with nude nylons and shoes that match. Again, we're not too strict about it, as long as it's plain black, classy, and flattering. We ask that it not be a long dress, but cocktail length, so we have some regularity.

Pick-Up (a few hours after Pref.): Pick-up shirts and jeans.... and coats, hats, gloves because we stand outside of Central Halll waiting for our girls for nearly an hour (we are a bit overzealous)! We get the shirts that night - the recruitment chairman picks them out and nobody else has seen them, so it's super exciting. :)

For Informal Rectuitment:

Day One (Sunday) - Open Houses: Same uniform we wear during formal recruitment.

Day Two (Wednesday) - Progressive Dinners: Black dresses, similar to formal desserts during formal recruitment.

Pick-Up (Friday): Again, pick up shirts with jeans, or shorts if it's warm.

Also during informal we have several "coke dates", usually on Monday and Tuesday, to invite the girls to hang out with us. For these, we are just asked to wear something Pi Phi, like a letter sweatshirt with jeans or shorts. We're pretty informal like that.

I don't believe our PanHel has any rules against matching outfits; however, I don't think any house has ever required their members to purchase a certain top form a certain store. I'm sure that if one house started doing it, the rest would, also, and PanHel probably wouldn't have a problem.

XOMichelle 04-22-2004 12:07 PM

Well, rush just ended for my girls, and they wore:

DAY 1: Jeans, nice black boots or sandals (toes must be painted if you wear sandals!), and the recriutment T-Shirts.

DAY 2: Nice going out outfits. Black pants or a skirt with a colorful top, no boobs, no strapless tops, no spaghetti straps. Same shoe rules from night 1.

DAY 3: Philanthropy round. Jeans and the Philanthropy T-shirt.

PREF: Black dresses or black dressy outfits (we relaxed the rules so girls could wear what they look good in). There is no strict rule on hose, but if you wear open toe shoes, you have to paint your toes, and you can't wear hose. And badges!

We went by quota from the previous year and always added on about 5-6 extras, just in case. That way, if/when we held COB, we could give our informal NM the same thing the rest of their pledge class got.

lyrica9 04-22-2004 03:34 PM

Day one: "Go Mean Green"
Green and white or blue and white baseball tees and jeans or jean skirt(that aren't light or dark), brown belt, brown sandals and our silver drop necklace.

Day two: Philanthropy
Black scoop neck shirt, black pants, black stilettos, silver adpi jewelry and either a red, blue or yellow sash belt (ronald mcdonald house colors)

Day three: Pref Night
black dress or black pantsuit, same shoes as day two, and silver adpi jewelry.

Bid Day: Purple&Pink bid day shirt, jean skirt, brown belt, brown flip flops.

those shoes are going to be a problem though, for me, they don't make stiletto heels in size 1.

CardinalSM 04-22-2004 05:31 PM

Oh my gosh, if our chapter made us wear stilettos we would look like idiots. We have a few girls in our chapter (including myself) who are infamous for clutziness. We have to practice over and over down the front steps in normal heels, stilettos would just spell out disaster!

KSUViolet06 07-14-2004 01:35 PM

*bump cuz I wanna know what other chapters are wearing*

TexasPhi1113 07-14-2004 01:48 PM

University of Texas, Austin

Round One (Meet and Greet): khaki shorts, matching tennis shoes, t-shirt provided by Panhellenic with individual sorority name

Round Two (two days of Philanthrophy):
Day One: black and white flowered sundress, black sandals with a small heel, matching jewelery
Day Two: off white sundress with flowers sewn near the bottom, off white sandals

Round Three (Skit Night): costumes assigned during workweek by the rush captains

Round Four (Pref Night): all white; white halter-style dress with white shoes

Round Five (Bid Day): cute sundress/nice skirt-shirt combo

lyrelyre 07-14-2004 02:49 PM

Oklahoma State

Open House -- denim capris, white shirt with letters in rhinestones (like the Bebe shirts), and stacked sole black flip-flops

House Tour -- black capris, bright solid colored tops, and stacked sole black flip-flops

Skit Day -- Solid colored dress (not red, black, or white) and shoes that go with it

Pref Day -- red dresses with black shoes

Bid Day -- bid day t-shirts with whatever bottoms and shoes you want

The craziest girl we had come through was wearing her panhellenic t-shirt (which was required). She had cut the neckline so it hung off one shoulder. The funniest part was that she had parted her hair into one-inch by one-inch sections and made each section an individual bun. She looked like a martian. One of the members looked up and saw her and guffawed so loud you could hear her over the welcome song. She got griped at by the rush advisor but didn't even care because it was so funny.

Rush clothes

Hey yall, Im a pnm about to go through rush in august and i have a few questions. at my school, they provide t-shirts for us on 2 days and the other days we wear dresses( i have a sundress picked out but not a pref dress yet.) anyway, my question is: i was planning to wear a denim skirt on one day and khaki shorts on the other( or denim capris) with the t-shirts..how long should they be? i mean, i know that if i have to question if theyre too short they probably are, but i am around 5'8, so a LOT of things are short on me that fit other girls fine, lol. so what is acceptable?? also, my dress i have picked out for skit day is spaghetti strap but it falls about to my knees and it looks pretty classy...is the spaghetti strap style a problem?? please let me know, b/c im pretty clueless right now:) thanks! megan

FSUZeta 07-15-2004 03:51 PM

megan

if you think that your shorts are too short, then they probably are.a good rule of measurement is that shorts be no shorter than when you have your arms by your side , fingers relaxed, the hem of the shorts should reach the tip of the middle finger.

i think that your spaghetti strap dress sounds pretty. just make sure that it is not too dressy for that round of parties...if you decide it is, maybe you could wear it for prefs!!

best wishes for a terrific recruitment!! keep us posted.

pinkniki50 07-19-2004 10:06 AM
