George Mason University has an excellent although not quite so well-known law school (it's on the Arlington, Va campus--right outside DC)

I know plenty of people who went to very good law schools and work as city attorneys (at least in NYC). Don't be fooled - they have a selection criteria of their own and it's not easy to get in either.

How many times someone's been published or cited in other sources isn't necessarily indicative of how good of a teacher they are. I've had some profs that aren't as academically known be mcuh more phenomenal teachers than the superstar profs.

I think this is such a good point - I don't want you to be teaching me because you can write a good book, I want you to be teaching me because you can explain CrimPro well. My first choice school appears nowhere on that list, and I don't care - I'm happy with what actual students have told me about the faculty and that's more important to me. :)

Nice. I've been joined at the hip with the Kaplan review... know the feeling all too well.

I think my book is pretty cute looking. If I was 21, I'd take him out for a drink after the test. ;)

bruinaphi 06-14-2004 01:10 AM

Good luck!

Some advice from an old timer:

Take a bottle of water or OJ and a piece of fruit with you to the exam to eat during your break. I have never been so happy to have packed a snack as I was during the LSAT.

Don't let the nuts or test sections make you think you messed up. Remember that it's all a mind game and you'll be just fine.

Breathe!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wouldn't dare. My girlfriend is already jealous of how much time I've been spending with that Kaplan book/class. I'm about ready to dump the bitch after today.

Callin' it quits.

I haven't had a drop of alcohol in a week (to ensure proper brain function :D) You can believe that my brain function might be somewhat impaired tommorow morning.

Depending on how long-term you two might be, I'm sure she'll appreciate that time you've spent w/ Lady Kaplan in the long run. :p

Yeah, and she's going to love me especially in my first year of law school. I'm moving in with her, so maybe that'll help?

GeekyPenguin 06-14-2004 07:23 PM

Well if the quality of men at my test today was any example of law school, SIGN ME UP.

That's the only positive thing I have to say right now...stay tuned for July 6th.

Peaches-n-Cream 06-14-2004 08:21 PM

One of my high school teachers went to school with Stanley Kaplan. He wound up becoming wealthy as he helped students prepare for standardized tests. Just a tidbit of information.

I hope you all did well on your LSATs. My neighbor did, and he just graduated from an Ivy League law school. Yeah, he's smart.

Kevin 06-14-2004 09:24 PM

Those of you that took it:

Which section do you think was experimental?

I know that it was the Logic Reasoning for me -- the guy sitting next to me had an expirimental Reading Comp section.

GeekyPenguin 06-14-2004 09:34 PM

If it was logic I'd pee my pants because I screwed that one up...I really have no clue though.

Kevin 06-14-2004 11:23 PM

A standard LSAT consists of 2 Logical Reasoning, 1 Logic Games and 1 Reading Comp section.

So what did you have extra?

Now that my brain is working again (I just made like a vegetable for three hours in front of the TV) I had an extra logical reasoning. My logic games weren't bad, I just didn't feel as strong about them.

Are you going to join me in the countdown until July 6th?

APhiRattlerGal 06-14-2004 11:47 PM

Yea there was 1 reading comp, 1 logic games, and 3 logical reasoning.

I'm w/ GeekyPenguin about the logic games. i'm usually really good at it but this one got to me a little.

How many more days till the 6th? I heard they email scores sometime in the morning...i'll be in my summer class but i'm thinking of taking my laptop (we have internet connection in the classroom) and checking every 30 seconds....

bruinaphi 06-15-2004 12:57 AM

When I was in school we had to wait 6 weeks to get our scores. It was the most nerve racking horrible 6 weeks I had until I got my applications in and was waiting to find out where I got in. In reality it was good training for the bar. In CA you take the bar the last week of July and get results at Thanksgiving.

Good luck to everyone!

So I've spent the morning reading up on the LS boards and all these people thought that the RC sections were hard. What did y'all think?

The bar looks like a beeotch.

Here in Oklahoma it consists of two days -- 1st day is 8 hours and multiple choice.

2nd day is 8 hours and essay.

Personally, I'm going to have to say that scares the bejeezes out of me. It does kind of explain why a lot of people get their JD's and go into other fields.

GeekyPenguin 06-17-2004 04:17 PM

Ooops, I didn't write that well. I meant I was reading law school message boards and people were complaining about how hard the RComp on the LSAT was...which I didn't think it was.

I have no idea what I'm doing in terms of the bar yet - probably WI and then later all the jazz that goes along with the DC one.

I didn't have any real trouble with it. It seemed like most of the questions were detail. The first one I completely nailed every single question. I probably got 70% right or something on that level. I've had better showings on RC, but that wasn't bad.

I loved the LG section though -- was ALL sequencing (all of them had some hybrid twist), but generally speaking, I'm good at sequencing.

The LR section was just the LR section... just kind of bleh.

Yea I thought RC was pretty easy.
LG are by far my favorite. Sequencing is what i do best, so i was psyched when I breezed through the LG section. I was disapointed that there was only one LG section!!

OK doesn't have the multistate? In CA the bar is three complete days. The first day is 3 essays in the morning and a performance test in the afternoon. The second day is the multistate, composed of 200 multiple choice questions spread out 100 in the morning and 100 in the afternoon. They have a variety of fact patterns and are very challenging. The third day is 3 essays in the morning again and a performance test in the afternoon.

Performance tests are "closed world" situations where the bar gives you case law or statutes and you have to either write a memo, a pleading or rewrite a statute. For those who have taken real property, the second performance test on my bar was on the "Rule Against Perpetuities." We had to rewrite the statute. The whole room was laughing when we opened it up. Can you imagine a more tortious way to spend 3 hours than writing about the RAP?

All I have to go on here is hearsay. I'm not really sure -- that's the way it was about 5 years ago is all I know. Could have -- and probably has changed since then.

22 Days.

WCUgirl 06-23-2004 12:09 PM

Received this email from a friend of mine who is also a paralegal. Thought it was cute:

Last night as I lay sleeping, I died or so it seemed,
Then I went to heaven, but only in my dreams
Up there St. Peter met me, standing at the pearly gates,
He said "I must check your record, please stand here and wait."
He turned and said "Your record is covered with terrible flaws,
On earth I see you rallied for every losing cause,"
I see that you drank alcohol and smoked and used drugs too,
Fact is, you've done everything a good person should never do.
We can't have people like you up here your life was full of sin,
Then he read the last of my record took my hand and said "Come in."
He led me up to the big boss and said "take her in and treat her well,"
"She used to work in a law firm, she's done her time in hell."

:D
