I've always gone by Nicole. My mom refused to let anyone call me Nikki when I was younger because she hated it.

Although, my boyfriend's mom has started using it. Hope Mom doesn't figure that out too soon. :p

me too! I used to be sad that i didn't have a nickname opposed to my entire family until one day in Junior high I was called "Heater" by one of my friends. She just thought, since it was similar to Heather but shorter it worked. But it stuck. I was known to all my teachers and friends as Heater all the way up to high school and I am still called it by some friends today. (but my AOL screen name doesn't help either: Heatermae8; I've had it since jr. high and I have friends I didn't even meet till college that will sometimes call me Heater.) Its very childish but oh well, it isn't something I hear very often anymore.

The only people that call me Jennifer are my doctors, professors that never cared what my name was anyway, and my parents when they were pissed off at me. I was Jennifer when I was little as well. Then I somehow became Jeni. Then I was Jenny throughout jr high and high school. Now everyone just calls me Jen. I prefer it that way.
I had a bf that would call me Jennifer in front of his parents and I always felt like I was being talked down to so I prefer not to use that name in personal relationships.

There's not much you can do with Lisa. My middle name is Kay, so Lisa Kay goes together really well but my mother calls me "Ree" which I like but when I was little I used to say "nu-unn I'm Lisa Kay!"

My close friends, and guy will sometimes refer to me as "Lis" (lease) but it just doesn't sound right since anyone hardly says that.

Ever since I learned to speak french and learned that Lisa in French was "Lise" I've always signed my name that way and friends who look at my signature always become curious but I like it.

I've always wanted to be "Liza" though. I loved how it sounded

AlphaSigOU 06-01-2003 10:47 PM

On my birth certificate, driver's license (and other official documents), my full first name is spelled out: Charles. I've been going by 'Chuck' ever since my days at the Alpha Sig house at OU. (I would have liked 'Charlie' better, but another brother had that nickname, so 'Chuck' stuck. :))

juniorgrrl 06-02-2003 01:23 AM

My name is Aimée - pronounced A-may - its French for Amy.

There's not much you can do with it, so I never had any nicknames. My family always called me MayMay when I was little -and my younger cousins still call me that - its just easier for them to say - but I never used it amongst my friends

It REALLY REALLY bugs me when people say my name as AHH-may. It's got a LONG A sound - its really not that hard, but people have the worst time with it.

I had to grow up with the most grown-up sounding name I can imagine: Carol. Seriously. Mom and Dad were going to name me Heather, but they thought there was too much that would rhyme with it and people might make fun... Like Feather, Leather, Pleather. So instead, I got the joy of growing up with the wonderful (sarcasm) Poltergeist lines... "Carol Anne... come towards the light." (middle name is Anne- they cursed me). I wish I could change my name. :(

SoCalGirl 06-02-2003 02:44 AM

I'm also a victim of the Carol Ann taunts!

Poltergeist 3 was on earlier. On two channels at the same time! Freaky that you'd mention it. :)

I went by Alexis since my sophomore year in high school. In college, I was Lex, Lexis, Lexie, Allie, etc. When I got hired on as administrative support tech to the Director of Corporate Facilities Management. I was Alexis for about 2 months. Finally, Lexee started appearing on my memos. People would email 'Lex' and 'Lexis'.

So, I gave up and let them go by the shortened versions.

Speaking of, I had a roommate officially named Alexandria. She went by Lex, Lexi, Lexie, Lexee, Lexi-lu, Alex, Alexis, Alexa, L, Alexan.., Alexandra, and Alexandria. Always been one of my favorite names.

As for me.. Like Hootie said, there's not too much you can do with Amy . I've never had a nick name that EVERYone's called me, but some of the favorites among certain small groups of friends are Ames, Aim, Aney, Barg (long story, kinda like my last name), Amy Lou, Amy Lynn, Amy Leigh Anne, Amy LaBelle, and Amy Lee. Out of all those names, Amy LaBelle is the real one. I'm so sick of being just Amy that I'm thinking of going by Amy LaBelle. Anyone like that?

i'm carol too. hate the name. would have loved caroline, or even carolena, which i go by sometimes since my middle name is lena. there are no nicknames for carol though, so i've never had one

WhiteDaisy128 06-15-2003 05:43 PM

Haha, I actually think I went backwards! My name is Carolyn Joyce and through-out childhood, everyone called me Carolyn. When I got into high school I was best friends with a girl named Amanda Jo, so she became AJ and I became CJ (just between the two of us)...but when I headed off to college everyone randomly started calling me CJ! So now that is what most of my friends call me. However, when I joined DG I introduced myself as Carolyn (because I thought it sounded more grown up)...so that is what most of my sisters call me...though some use CJ, which I love!

My biggest problem isn't that my name sounds too juvenile, but no one spells it correctly (what's so hard about throwing an H in between G and A???). I've started telling people to just call me Meg because it's foolproof to spell. It took me a long time to get used to hearing "Meg." I've always been Meghan or Megs... my dad still calls me Meggie or Meggie-doodles (don't ask).

Don't feel bad, I've always been and will always be Amy-Doodles to my grandma :)

My name's Carrie. When I was little, there were like 5 of us, and of course NO ONE spelled it the same way. (There are just waaay to many spellings of this name!)

But as I've gotten older I don't run it to it as much.

My mom calls me Lucy sometimes, because of a nursery rhyme I used to sing (& mess up). That's the only nickname I've ever had, and she's the only one that's ever called me that.

For all of you Amy's- one of my best friends (high school & college) is an Amy. Her nickname? Bad Dog. I've called her that almost since we met (long story). She's a year younger than me, and went to a different college. But then she transferred after her freshman year to the same school I went to for the music program. And she was like "I'd really like to go by Amy" because all of her hs friends called her Bad Dog, and when she went to her 1st college she finally got everyone to call her Amy (because they didn't know BadDog). I tried, but for one thing, my friends had already heard all of these stories about Bad Dog. Plus it was hard. I tried, but wasn't too successful. Sometimes I remembered, but most of the time it was Bad Dog. So there are worse things than Amy. ;)

On my gosh. One of my chapter sisters has the same name as you except Kaye is her last name. Since Lisa is a really popular name, we called her by her entire name. This is really weird that you have the same name. I'm freaking out, lol!

Natty 06-15-2003 07:39 PM

My name is...

My name is Natalie Michelle and I have gone by Nat, Natty, Nattawe, Natalye, and many more and now I go by Nat! I love it! It is not baby sounding at all! I only hated putting my full name on there! It is 24 letters long!!!! AHHHH!

But I purposely named my first daughter Kathryn (we call her Katie) so that she will have a variety of nicknames from which to choose as she goes through different stages of her life. Katie, Kate, Kay, Kathryn...

KR, my name is also Kathryn (but I spell it a different way!) I have been called all those names. Right now, I'm just Kate.

In addition, a lot of girls around here go by double names (Mary Holland, Anne Reed etc.) or middle names (Mary Logan is called Logan). I have many friends, male and female, who have as we call them, "last names for first names" (ie: Hayes, Bailey, Manning, Shaw, Keating...). They're a great way to incorporate family names into your child's name, but if a daughter's name is Charlotte Collins Smith and she goes by Collins, Laura Yorke Jones and is called Yorke, or William McSwain Davis and he goes by McSwain, it turns a few heads in the "real world". More so for girls who have untraditional names like Collins or Yorke, but it's always trouble. So my solution is simple - I'll name my kids what they'll be called. I mean, Katherine/Katie is no problem but their first name will definitely be what they go by. Trust me, it saves a lot of trouble!
oh my land, that is soooooooooo Southern. :) My dad has his mom's maiden name for his middle name, but he would never go by it.

My mom named me Sheila so I wouldn't get nicknames, but I did anyway (Shy, Shee etc). I just thank God in the sky above that she didn't go along with her friend who jokingly wrote "for little Robert or Roberta" (!) on the baby gift. (Robert is my dad) Her cousin wanted me to be Tana...which I kind of dig...but I don't think I am a Tana.

My cousin is Gloria Jean (who I think was an old movie star) and in the family we have never called her anything but Jeanie. Add to that that she's been married since I was very tiny and I always think of her by her married name. So when someone asked me once if I was related to Gloria mylastname, I just stared at them like "huh"?

oh, someone mentioned about the "old" sounding names. I think it will be hilarious when all the Tiffanys and Ashleys are in their 80's and Gertrude and Edna are the new "hip" names. ;)

AOcutiePi4ever 06-16-2003 12:05 AM

I'm Dana to my college friends & lifetime 'aquantinces', Day to my high school friends, and Dayday to my mom (-:

IHeartAXO 06-16-2003 12:19 AM

I hate my name... well, I hate my whole name when its combined. My first name is Whitney which I really dislike. No one has that name on the east coast, but it's allllll over the west coast! Still hate it.

My middle name COULD be pretty... if it went with the rest of my name. It just sounds so out of place. Alessandra. It would be beautiful if my name was Italian (ie: Daniella Alessandra Ciccone... or something like that) and it all just flowed. But, my last name is German and it just doesn't fit. Alessandra COULD be a really nice name, if used correctly. :)

For some reason, I loooove names that sound like last names. My favorites are presidential: Reagan for a girl and Jackson Carter (Jack) for a boy. I also like boys names for girls: Ryann, Charlie, James (as in James King), etc. I wouldn't name my daughter with one of those names, but I do think they're cute. I also love the names Bennett for a boy and Ava (which my mom wanted to name me!) and Brynn for girls. I like the names Keegan and Tierney as middle names, too. They sound like maiden names... but they're not. I'm weird. ;)

tinydancer 06-16-2003 12:30 AM

Something dumb I said once. Remember when Old Testament names started to be real popular for boys? I said,"I really don't like those Biblical names for boys." My mom asked, "Well, what names do you like?" and I said "oh, James, Paul, Matthew..." Boy, did I get SUCH a look....

When I started school, I could not spell Elizabeth. I spent practically all of first grade with a name card taped to my desk. I would write "Eliz" and then stop because it was soooo long. It morphed to Liz in junior high, and in high school it became Lizz because I wanted it to be different. I still have to tell people, "Yes, it has 2 Zs."

Man I am jealous! I wish I had such a versatile name. There is only so much one can do with Kiran.

sigmagrrl 06-16-2003 11:34 AM

I don't know if anyone posted this, but I have the opposite problem. I have too formal a name. It's very aristocratic (not bragging either), and I've always wanted a nickname, something my friends could call me...

LuaBlanca 06-16-2003 03:12 PM

My mom named me Sarah, and she thought she was being different because at the time, there weren't many. Now, we're everywhere! All throughout grade school, all the other Sarah's and I would scream "SPECIFY!" when the teacher would call on just plain "Sarah." ARGH

There aren't many nicknames for Sarah...so my friends just call me Sa, or Sarah G (my middle name starts with a G) to differentiate. My family affectionately calls me "Harass" because if you remove the 2nd "s" Haras is Sarah spelled backwards. :p

axotiger 06-16-2003 03:38 PM

OK, My name is Stephanie, but I have NEVER gone by that... always 'Stevie', I dont think I'm ready for the turn over yet... I'm currently co-oping [ya know, real job] and they call me stevie too... i'm not sure if i could answer to Stephanie- because i know they'd shorten it to Steph or Stephie and if they're gonna shorten it.. why not call me stevie still?

amycat412 06-16-2003 07:13 PM

Amy.

Well, had a class in HS where there were SIX Amys. So friends took to calling me AL (my initials). Over the years people other than high school friends have tried to call me AL and I won't even answer to it, its like I don't hear them, its just not right not coming out of a HS friend's mouth.

Ames, Aim-those are the usual. One friend I no longer am friends with called me Aimers, that drove me nuts.

I always preferred Amycat, but no one would call me that... thank God for GC, lol.
