I probably should weigh in here.
I've been to every place mentioned here (so far), and have been to Texas many times. I worked for a Texas company for a while. In my personal opinion, Texas is OK. Not stupendous. It's got some great stuff and some bad stuff. One thing it certainly doesn't lack is ego. In fact, again in my opinion, what makes people dislike Texas has more to do with the attitude that Texans try to stuff down your throat than anything wrong with Texas. The fact is that everywhere I've lived, visited or been to for business has good and bad points. Texas is far from my favorite, but it also isn't the worst by a long shot. I know that some of the attitude is supposed to be in fun, but it gets out of hand. It's great to be proud of your state, but not at the expense of someone elses. We're all proud of our states, and some take major offense at someone putting it down. Games are fun, but name calling can get ugly and cause serious hurt feelings. So far, this has been OK, but let's keep it that way, huh? Have fun, but be mindful of others. |

Now if someone from South Jersey started raggin on North Jersey, then I'd have to accept. Which leads me to a question- does anyone else's state have a North vs South, or East Vs West or some kind of geographical feud about their state??? I think the whole reason Jersey has that kinda thing is because the people in South Jersey identify with Philly and the people from North Jresey identify with NYC. Just curious... |

I loved Jersey when I was out there this summer - my aunt lived in Basking Ridge and her condo was so pretty and in a wooded area, and then 5 minutes away were stores. It was great. And bagels out east - wow! Not even close to Panera, which I loved until then. |

California is awesome...why do you think I moved back home after school (besides obvious financial reasons, of course ;) )...in order to be close to Sea World, Disneyland, LA, a drive to San Francisco, you name it, I want to go there! |
North/South Feuds
NorCal vs SoCal is often a fun arguement to have with a friend.
|
The NorCal vs. SoCal can be more than fun... split the damn state... joke. I like it the way it is.

I think the idea was plain, though. |
OK guys I have never said "such and such state sucks"-can we be a little more tactful?
Thank you, ONE PROUD TEXAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
Southern born and southern bred, but now I'm happy to wear Canadian red! :D

GREAT THREAD
I think the reason why Texans have to keep boasting and shoving it down our throats about how "great" they are is that they know deep down how mediocre TX really is.
Myself, I am from Florida (born in Atlanta, and raised in a little bit of both). I am also a big fan of NYC and Boston. What bugs me most about Texas is how they claim to be "SOUTHERN" (and I don't mean geographically...clearly Texas is located in the southern portion of the country. I mean SOUTHERN with history and heritage). Um, no. You want southern, check Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, even north Florida. What Texas is, is a bunch of people who try too hard. Keep trying guys, you might one day pull it off (not). |
What's so bad about Oklahoma? Some people think it's all hick-town because they've never been there. The people are nice, it's not too polluted, there's decent stuff to do, and they have good schools, just like about every other state in the nation. I have relatives there, and I've never felt uncomfortable or unwelcome there.
But I'm from New Mexico...no one seems to have mentioned us yet. |

I think the state's population is what my city's population is. |
VA has a beach, moutains, and lots of historical stuff.

And, as long as I live in NY and will be happy to be a New Yorker, I am first and foremost a Michigander! (Another reason to love Michigan - I think we have the coolest nickname!!!) |

Use of that word when talking about states, cities, etc. is not uncommon in the hallowed halls of GC. And, I agree. Let's be kind to each other. |

Michigan and Wisconsin are both really neat states -- we've lived in both. Everything from major cities to beaches to spectacular scenery.
Add to that, really good people. (I wonder why they're both right hands?) |

Hmmm...
Guess it depends on whether you look at the palm or the back. |

In an earlier group chat he had said that Texas sucks, so i went ahead and posted a thread of why i thought Texas was better than where he lived. It was not meant to flame anyone and was a joke, but with all the apparant anti-Texas sentiments on this board it quickly became a insult fest. Whatever, i'm done on this thread. For the record, i believe that thread was the only time i've (loosely) said some other place sucked. I've lived in Denver and Northern Virginia besides Texas, as well as spent ample time in nebraska and south dakota as well as NYC due to family. So, believe me when i say that Texas is the best placed i've lived. *EDITED to add* "nebraska" thread in question: Reasons Texas is better than nebraska threads where i have used the word 'sucks': Rushing the field Fun game so i guess i did 'say' that Nashville sucks, but that was more a stab at Nashville country music as opposed to Texas music Kitso KS 361 times people on GC like to take little jokes and blow them out of proportion |
Looks like it's up to me to weigh in for Connecticut :D
- Quaint little New England towns - Not too far from NYC or Boston (I'm a city girl) - Affordable houses (in most towns anyway) - 4 distinct seasons and weather that keeps you guessing - The world's worst drivers :p |
I might live in Nebraska, and love the cornhuskers, but I am a native Coloradoan...however, I will not support any of their college teams, but BRONCOS ROCK!!!
(and beats the shit out of the 'cowboys') |

You have my appologies for misrepresenting the name of your thread. Without using the word "sucks," though, that was pretty much the message I read into the post -- even though, as I said at the time, I was sure it was done in humor. However, from the PM's I got after my post, I will tell you that there were people hurt and offended by the thread. Take that for whatever it is worth. The same goes for anyone else who decides it is OK to take a direct frontal attack on someone else's home state, city of residence, etc. I think that's 361 kinds of thoughtless. At least some people didn't consider the thread a "little joke." I will just reiterate this: I believe I've still been to everywhere mentioned before and since that post (although I haven't gone back to really double check). None of those places is perfect, and no place is worthless. Whether one place is better than another is purely a matter of what we are comfortable with and what we like or dislike. I would go on, but to what end? No opinions are likely to change, are they? |
Umm, so I've been looking at the map of the US the last few days that I have been sub. teaching...and I still am missing the hand as a map thing. Does it look like a hand or something, cause I'm missing it....
 someone help a confused east coast girl out...thanks |

I have lived in New York, Connecticut and Arkansas. I now live in Arizona, in the Phoenix area. It is growing annually and it is cosmopolitan. The highways and freeways have Southwestern motifs carved or painted on them. I have visited Sedona and it is breath taking.
