I think I read that a PO Box will take longer. My brother has a box (but not PO Box) and I was telling him to change it just in case. Can you send it anywhere else? Or maybe there is a local bookstore near you that is delivering that you could do instead?

AchtungBaby80 05-31-2003 01:12 PM

I hope I end up going to Britain in the next little bit, because I want to get the British version! :)

Does anyone know when the next movie comes out? I'm hoping it's November like it has been for the past two, because I have been going to see them on opening night for my birthday and I don't want to break the tradition. Laugh all you want... :D

tinydancer 05-31-2003 03:52 PM

I'm not laughing! I saw the first 2 on opening day - even took a day off from work to go! I heard the 3rd one is due out summer of 2004:(
Care to start counting days??

It probably will take longer...oh well, as long as they deliver it by June 28th, I'll be happy. Sitting in the hospital is no fun, and I'm not a huge TV watcher (except at nighttime :D ) so the book will be a good distraction for when I'm all alone

(I'd try for the daytime delivery, but I'm afraid someone would take it if I asked the delivery guys to just leave it....nearest bookstore is about a 20 min drive from my house, so I'm not thrilled with trying to wait in line to buy the book....it's okay, anticipation is good for the soul, right? ;) )

I hate to disappoint, but it's expected in summer of 2004.

Of course, i'm definitely not laughing... I'm a pretty bad HP weirdo myself. :)

KillarneyRose 06-01-2003 12:24 AM

Totally unrelated to this thread but...

The thing I'm most looking forward to seeing in the next movie is how they portray the Dementors. Probably can't be anything more scary than I've thought of in my own mind, but you never know! http://www.handykult.de/plaudersmilies.de/evild.gif

OrigamiTulip 06-11-2003 04:59 PM

I've become completely addicted to Harry Potter since I got the set over Memorial Day weekend. I'm now waiting on pins and needles for the new book. Ony 10 more days!

sugar and spice 06-11-2003 05:02 PM

I'm so excited! My boyfriend said he'd get me the new book for our six month anniversary . . . :D I am such a dork. One of my friends and I have already decided to have a "Harry Potter reading contest" -- the first one finished with book #5 wins.

lauralaylin 06-11-2003 06:59 PM

So what does everyone think about the big AOL spoiler? I read it and wish that I didn't. But what I don't get is if it's not sanctioned by Scholastic, why is it still on Amazon?

Rowan Atkinson, is Mr. Bean!
He would be ALL WRONG. Voldemort would be good if Vincent Price played...too bad that he is deceased.
I hope they don't cast him...it would be a travesty!

BTW: here's the "Canadian" cover of Harry #5:

and here is the cover to the "Adult" Version (no, it's not a "racier" version of Harry Potter....LOL)

The only thing is it said someone MUST be home to sign for it.

i pre-ordered it back in January from Amazon and mine is coming on the 21st too!

greeklawgirl 06-11-2003 08:02 PM

I couldn't even wait long enough to sit around all day for Amazon to deliver! I pre-ordered mine at the local Borders and will be in line with the rest of the horde to get my copy at midnight.

Now I just have to make sure that greeklawboy doesn't try to wrestle it out of my hot little hands. Order your own copy! ;) :p

SDTSarah 06-11-2003 09:35 PM

AHHH! Harry Potter fans! I have my own predictions about the book...I have to wonder if Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle will be returning to Hogwarts...hmm. Oh, well...it's back to Statistics homework. :(

LOL...by the way...I totally thought the "adult version" was going to be a "racy" Harry when I first heard about it!

You don't have to travel that that far. The books sold in Canada *ARE* the British version. (Scout's Honour!)

You can order it from Canada through:
www.chapters.ca or
www.amazon.ca (the ".ca" part means that that's the Canadian Amazon site).

A friend of mine who works in a book store in England explained it to me that the adult covers were sort of designed so that adults could read Harry Potter in "public" without being embarrassed that they were reading a "kids' book", know what I mean? They actually have adult covers for ALL of the HP books, in addition to the "kids covers". I personally prefer the "kids covers" as they are more colourful, etc.

BlondeGurl 06-11-2003 10:50 PM

My boyfriend is an unloader at walmart (one of the guys that takes all the stuff off the trucks and pulls it to the floor for the stockers to put on the shelves). He knows what a freak I am about Harry Potter and he told me the second they got them in the store. I have been begging him for two weeks to steal a copy for me! They are just sitting there in the back where he is at all the time. I can't handle it! They aren't in boxes or anything they are already set up in their display thingy and everything. Just the thought of it makes me want to go back there grab one and read it in a corner to myself (so that technically it wont be stealing;) )

I'd be just as tempted to do the same thing! Hopefully my book will come the 21st, or at the latest the 24th...I can't wait to read it...I can't even speculate about what might happen during this year!

I don't really get the point of that. I mean, anybody who sees the name or title on the cover is going to know what they're reading anyway, regardless of whether the cover features a dramatic-looking silver phoenix or a cartoon kid on a broom. And everybody knows that so many adults read Harry Potter to begin with that I have no idea why they'd be embarassed about it.

I like the kids' covers better too. :)

It's all about Marketing! Why sell just one copy of the book to a family when you can sell TWO? One to the kid, one to the parents...now I don't actually know anyone who would buy 2 copies for one household, but I think it's along the lines of what they do with TV Guide sometimes (they have 4 covers for one week, of say, Star Trek characters, and they'll say "COLLECT ALL 4!" and why? Cuz they want our money! $$$$ KA CHING!

Fun news on the book:

I'm getting mine on June 14.

Anyone who's read my incessant nerdy ramblings knows that I review books for AOL BookReporter. I got a note from my editor about two weeks ago approving me to review OotP, and originally, her assistant told me that I'd have the book by June 18. About three days ago, he emailed me and said, "Scholastic is overnighting you a copy by courier on Saturday the 14th." That's the good news.

The bad news: I can't breathe a word about the book to anyone, or loan out my copy, or publish any thoughts on the book or any part of my review until midnight on the 21. If I do otherwise, I could be sued by Scholastic and J.K. Rowling. Scary stuff. Scholastic has an embargo out on the book. Libraries have to catalog them behind locked doors and keep the books in locked cupboards until they're ready to circulate. (Libraries have to receive their books early so there's time to cover, barcode, and catalog them before the pub date).

tinydancer: Voldemort is not going to be played by anyone in Prisoner of Azkaban, because he's not in that book. Did you mean Goblet of Fire?

Well...I asked. And just when you thought it was this long, complicated answer :)

To be a little more helpful, though, they want people who have education and/or experience in a literary profession critiquing books and book reviews. I'm a librarian, so I read about five review journals a month (one of which I write for), and learned how to properly write book reviews in grad school. I found AOL BookReporter's teen site first (my specialty is young adult literature) and wrote to their editorial assistant asking if they needed reviewers. They did, and I've been reviewing for them for a year and a half. There's no money involved, but I do get free books, often before they're published, and it looks really good on my resume.

sherbertlemons 06-14-2003 12:15 PM

We have officially less than a week left till the release!

If you want something to tide you over till the weekend, go to www.the-leaky-cauldron.org. Scroll down, and they have a link to an excerpt from the audio book that will have you wondering and waiting on pins and needles. (The heading is OotP clip to return to AOL and is on Amazon.)

KappaStargirl 06-14-2003 12:19 PM

Got my copy yesterday, and while I'm now under a gag order from Scholastic, I will say that the book does not disappoint. It was well worth the wait. So hold on, everyone. You're going to love it.

sherbertlemons 06-14-2003 12:43 PM

Are you finished with it already?

lovelyivy84 06-14-2003 01:41 PM

seee that is why I have to work in publishing. It is too fun to have access to books first, lol.

I will so be at the bookstore at midnight to get my copy! Estimate that I will be unable to do anything until I finish the book.

MooseGirl 06-15-2003 02:30 PM

OMG! I can't believe I am just finding this thread now!!

Less than a week, woohoo!!!

so, yesterday I called my friend and sister, Marilyn, and asked her:
"you know what next saturday is??"
"um, Yvette's anniversary?"
"no, something u and I share"
after a few more guesses, I finally told her, the dingbat!!

I preordered books for both of us (she bought me the DVD) so we're both going to wait around for our books then meet up later on.

We're gonna make it a HP night. read the first couple chapters to each other, play the trivia boardgame I have, watch the movies, play playstation game, etc...

i also have some Bertie Botts every flavour beans that i've been holding onto (although Mar claims she will never try them again!)

I think i might even bring my wand to show her...and maybe dress up in a cape too (i still have costumes from when I was into medieval re-creation)

I've only read each book 2x and the second time I read them in French.....I'm sooo excited!!

AFAIK there are no release parties going on here in my town, otherwise I would've been there!

sherbertlemons 06-16-2003 11:04 PM

WILL FRIDAY HURRY UP AND COME ALREADY! </outburst>

You know what's fun? Feeding Bertie Botts to unsuspecting innocents. *very evil grin*

EagleChick19 06-16-2003 11:06 PM

Days until the book comes out....5!

I preorder my copy on Amazon.com :)

I can't wait!

Thousands of Potter books stolen
Tuesday, June 17, 2003 Posted: 8:06 AM EDT (1206 GMT)

LONDON, England (CNN) -- The appetite for all things related to Harry Potter shows no sign of abating as police said thousands of copies of the eagerly awaited new book had been stolen.

The 7,680 copies of Harry Potter and The Order of the Phoenix -- worth an estimated £1 million ($1.7 million) -- were taken from a trading estate in Merseyside, north-west England at the weekend, officers said on Tuesday.

The books, each weighing two pounds (900 grammes), were stolen from a trailer, which was later found abandoned.

Police warned anyone tempted to handle copies of the book before its official publication on Saturday they could face criminal charges.

"If anyone is offered the book prior to Saturday, or after Saturday at a reduced price they should immediately contact us," said a police spokeswoman.

The thefts are the latest crimes connected to Harry Potter. Last month four people were arrested last month in Suffolk, eastern England, in connection with the discovery of two copies of the latest book.

The first four books about the teenage wizard have sold almost 200 million copies in 55 languages in 200 countries.

Two films have been made out of the first two books, "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" ("Sorcerer's Stone" in the U.S.) and "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets."

The first movie brought in almost $1 billion worldwide, making it the second-highest grossing movie of all time after "Titanic." The second film has made almost $800 million.

J.K. Rowling, who wrote the first book as a penniless single mother in an Edinburgh cafe, is now richer than the UK's Queen Elizabeth II with a personal fortune estimated at $450 million.

By the release of the fourth book, "Goblet of Fire," in July 2000, interest had risen to such levels that book stores around the world were offering midnight parties to welcome customers.

The combined first printing in north America and the United Kingdom of the book exceeded 4.5 million copies which remains a publishing record.

Filming is now under way for the third film in the Harry Potter series to be released later this year.

--CNN's Eden Pontz contributed to this report.

I just want a copy of the book before I head to Aruba. I'm worried I won't be able to find a copy before then :(. I didn't pre-order it or anything, but I think I'll stop by B&N tonight and do so and tell them I don't have a hard-on for it, I just need it by 7/3...

greeklawboy bought me a little box of Bertie Botts because he thought I'd get a kick out of it (I did!). So I brought it into work yesterday and havoc ensued as one co-worker mistook "earwax" for banana, and another ate "dirt." I mistook "grass" for watermelon and had to spit it out. :o

Bertie Botts are dangerous!
